OlderSofia Vergara: 'I Thought I Could Fix My Accent'
Sofia Vergara flashes a smile while grocery shopping with friends on Monday (January 2) in Los Angeles.
The 39-year-old actress recently revealed that she spent a lot of money trying to “fix” her Colombian accent when she started acting.
“At the beginning I thought I could fix my accent to make it sound like something else so I spent a lot of money and time to change it,” Sofia recently shared. “I was going to auditions and I was putting all my concentration on changing the next word to a different accent so my acting completely disappeared. I was just thinking about the pronunciation. I was getting no response from directors or anything because it was terrible.”

yah but as a real actress she should be able to do at least one other accent.
@emma: I believe she meant she tried to get rid of it completely. Faking accents when you have a mild one is easy, but with a strong one like hers its very difficult.

probably she can do it in her native language? It is hard to learn to change accents in a foreign language. Some people live their whole lives in a diff. country and jus cannot lose their original accents, much less to sound native. She learned English as an adult, most probably.
She does exaggerate her accent for effect much like Charo did in the 70s and 80s. If it works for her (and it apparently does) good for her. But it is very obvious that it is faked. She is playing the part of the ‘spicy Latina’ for the Anglo masses.
i think she’s very likable, but sad to say, this whole colombian accent she can’t seem to get rid of is SO overdone/fake. if you guys have ever seen dirty sexy money (tv series used to be on abc), she was on there for a couple episodes and she could speak english with almost undetectable colombian accent. it’s so good that when she landed the role on modern family and does interviews like she can’t speak normal english to save her life, it was a good reminder of how fake hwood is.
