Jillian Michaels: Take A Day Off From the Gym!

Jillian Michaels: Take A Day Off From the Gym!

Jillian Michaels shows off her toned tummy in this photo shoot from Self‘s January issue.

Here’s what the 37-year-old celeb trainer, who’s also the mag’s cover girl, had to share:

On not making New Year’s resolutions: “I think that any day is an opportunity to change your life. So I don’t really look for a period of time where I go, ‘Oh yes, this is what I’m going to change.’ Whenever I realize that I am unhappy with something or I’m off course and I need to make a quick course correction, I can do that whether its January or June.”

On not clocking in hours at the gym: “You know you are overdoing it if you are spending more than 5-6 hours a week in the gym. I really, really think you need one day off – your body needs to rest and you need that recovery time. So, if you are going over 6 hours a week, you definitely may have an exercise addiction – unless you are morbidly obese and you have a ton of weight to lose. That’s a different story.

Jillian put together a 16-minute equipment-free exercise program for Self readers – check out the video on Self.com!

lol she doesn’t know $hit. 3-4 hours per week is more than enough, especially if you are weight lifting. You need a day after each workout for your muscles to recover, so working out every other day is ideal. Since there are only 7 days in a week, the max you should be working out is 4 hours and that is if you have serious weight to lose or want to put on serious muscle.

I like her outlook on New Years resolutions. Everyday is another chance to turn it around.

Another one with no waistline.

Well, I happen to like exercising for an hour or more every day – 1 hour weight training 3 times/week, intense cardio 2 times/week for ~1 hour, sometimes low impact cardio after weight training just because it helps me with ‘cooling down’ more than stretching does, and then two “rest days” during which I don’t go to the gym but am active as in walking or cycling everywhere instead of taking the car, taking even long ass stairs instead of the lift, etc. So I’m definitely over her 5-6 hours, but so what? Everyone is different and she as a celebrity personal trainer should know better than dishing out broad generalizations.
