Gerard Butler: Surfing Accident Was A 'Close Call'

Gerard Butler ducks out of The Box nightclub on Friday (January 6) in London, England.

The night before, the 42-year-old Scottish actor attended a special screening of his new movie Coriolanus.

Gerard also recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show where he talked about his scary surfing accident while filming his other movie, Of Men and Mavericks, in Northern California.

“[The waves] just took me in, and I couldn’t get up. It was pretty hairy. It was maybe of of the few times that reports were not exaggerated. It was a pretty close call,” he shared.

“I was actually in the ambulance and wanted to go back, which was a little crazy. But [surfing is] pretty addictive,” Gerry added.

FYI: Gerard is wearing Joe’s Classic Fit with Rogue‘s leather biker jacket.

Find it funny that anyone would be surprised that Gerry like many men would enjoy going to a kinky club. If the place is considered to an IT place, makes it even likely Gerry will be there. Forgotten Voyeur already?

Apologies that should read Denzel Washington. JJ still needs an edit button!

@Sharon: sharon, you’ve put into stronger words the impression I got from being at the screening. Much of his disengaged (um, um, you know) story telling was cut too. Mind you, if he was staring into space directly past gn, that was directly at me, lol!

That frammie person is everywhere. Gerry looks kind of freaked out by her. He is polite and knows she is harmless. But he is.

Good Morning JJer’s! Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Here’s a photo of a fan with GB. Not sure when it was taken.

Looks like G might be attending this game today:

    Have a great day friends!

That show was crazy fun!! They’re so much more relaxed over there with content, humor and storytelling! Great fun so early in the morning. But sorry don’t see the distracted thing or that he’s anything but not the primary focus at that time. Feel he’s listening, not ‘on’ and he not the focus, which he can handle, so does a kind of Zen thing?
Liked seeing this. An hour, well almost, with Gerry! DO think he did have surfing flashback, his fan got too much attention, and correcting him was out of place… and I’d slink out of my chair if he ever pointed to me (and he won’t) and said, “She follows me everywhere!” even asking if she’d moved to the States. Said she probably took the photo? Ouch!
Also felt he felt very embarrassed at the Conference mention. And why didn’t she yell out they had one in my home town (that wild horses couldn’t get me to)? ooOOoo whoops. She can have a chapter in his bio, she’s has actually earned it! LOL
who thinks reading into what and why he as at The (Squeeze) Box ;o) is useless or his face after as well… he’s an adult and go where he wishes, no? Yes.

Also, as I’ve just put this up at the blog with some comments this was one of mine…
The Island people are just SO much funnier than we are! Jokes are drier, naughtier, along with more relaxed laughter. Lots of genuine laughter here. I have to take back about the nervous stuff, while he is when on the spot talking about some things, he’s also very good at carrying the jokes along further out there.
And he got to be with the author of Wonderwall! Another ‘dot’ as I used that song in the old story, all of his. Love him (the artist). Thought he didn’t ‘get’ it being Gerry’s FAVORITE song and that was very dull and ego driven. That Gerry was expecting a different reaction thus reached for the glass to shut his mouth from the sting of insult? Just my opinion.
Seeing this all helped put a lot of the shorter clips in perspective. He met The Hobbit. That is so cool. Think Gerry loves LOTR like so many.
Think his sense of humor leans toward the naughty, like many men, so his being at The Box as a single male with its “talent” does not upset me at all. He’s a colorful man, who likes a certain kind of (cough) entertainment like all men, and activity to stay healthy, like all men. He’s single and allowed to go where he pleases.
Just will say, while there is no way to know what went down inside (if anything) but certain he got an eyefull, but that he looks very tired heading out. And, if he did NOT want to be caught there leaving, or felt shamed, he could have not been.

Gerard Butler was into being at The Box. It’s a blast. Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig love it too. WHO cares that he was there? He is an adult.

    @GFW: @GFW:
What are you smoking? You’ll defend anything he does.
Gerry was not himself at the Graham Norton show, that was obvious, yet to you he was normal?
Honestly, either come up with a meaningful post, or just STFU for a change – you’re annoying.

To me he looked as if he was lethargic as a result of taking pain killers.
Or, maybe he was so tired from his last minute trip to North Africa. Exhaustion can also produce lethargic behavior.
Even in these pix of him exiting The Box, he looks beyond tired.
Clearly, he isn’t himself the last two days. Let’s hope he rested up and appears better at the game tonight.

    GFW Says:

We see things differently. Think that’s still allowed, no? He was lucid, coherent, very there on the show in my opinion. Tired? Yes. Nervous? Yes. On pain meds? Possibly but no evidence of his being out of it here (to me) because of it.
It’s his life to live.Travel constantly or not, why judge him for it? It won’t stop him. I’m not making excuses for him. He’s a man, and adult, and you clearly disapprove of his choices of entertainment. Judgmental much, you coward sock?
and stop telling me to shut up

None of us need to worry about Gerry, he knows how far to push himself and he is still dealing with the realization of what almost happened to him. He knows he escaped this time and if you heard him say he was with three professional surfers, so he was there because he wanted to be there. Mother nature just showed him how she can kick the toughest butt out there.
When he gets to the game today you will see the relaxed animated person he is. He’ll be having fun. If you noticed he has stayed home longer than he usually does, so he is reenergizing himself.

I just saw this comment by a poster on yet another story about GB’s surfing accident. A different viewpoint. Make what you like of it.

“For what it’s worth, I’m a certified surf instructor, 29-year old female, and I live in Southern California training professionals for a living. Being held under waves is something that happens to EVERYONE and is nothing to call an ambulance over unless you’re a pampered Hollywood star who craves attention. Before you fall for the trap, remember this is just typical PR hype to promote a film about a similar storyline. You may like Gerard Butler, but there are many of us in the industry who don’t. Let’s just say he’s a graduate of the Matthew McConaghey School of Wannabe’s.

I hate when I double sign! Arrr.
I’m really wondering why these even are here? And why start a topic about his being in some nightclub at all? But it isn’t the first time. It’s just a first time in a long time we’ve seen him exiting from some club. So what?
I’ll admit these are hard to look at. He looks like he’s running on empty and running just to run. Activity for activities sake. But it is his life to live as he sees fit. Did I wish I never saw these? I could live without them. I’m not sharing them at the blog, but might. But I’ve “mommies” there who want to hug him and place band-aides on his boo-boos. Or become anxious and over-stressed and focus on his life rather than theirs (which I’m trying to avoid).

In one he looks drawn, weighed down as if carrying the world on his shoulders. Then again, it could be he’s just ducking to enter the door. See what I mean? He has his hat on and that’s on for a reason too. Maybe he really wasn’t all that up to being there is my original point. He’s a people pleaser for certain.
It’s just emotional are contagious and I refuse to get on any bandwagon that he has sex inside or is a bad person for spending his time how he chooses. That just backfires with him. He hates being judged too.
Again, why this thread even exists is beyond me.
whose IS sharing (this there) for a reason and my other posts there are very real as we all see what we want to see when it comes to my lug hoping he has fun at the game today and is happy he’s staying put there

Sorry, but that’s a very mean comment by that woman. He’s a star in a film. He’s insured, and filming a high-risk film, and it was mandatory the get looked over. What a cold-hearted bi/tc/h.
What bothers me is his wanting to return that day to show the ocean who’s who! That was insane. Whoever talked him out of that is who really saved his life. God was there twice!

Every interview I have ever seen of Butler, he is fidgety. Always rubbing his hands up and down his legs, picking lint off his clothes, clasping and unclasping his hands, starting to scratch his ear or eye and then stopping. He is an antsy guy. All part of the package that makes him so endearing to me. Hope his Bhoys do well today. Have a great day, JJers. Positive thoughts and prayers to all! XXO

Sounds to me like the certified surf instructor is suffering from sour grapes. Maybe she felt she should have been a consultant on the movie and she was by passed by professional surfers and especially by the man Gerry is portraying in the movie. You don’t have to be a surfer to see waves come and go in multiples.
I just watched a program about the beaches in Australia, they flag the beaches when strong waves come in to protect the swimmers from being caught up in them. It showed the lifeguards paddling out on a surf board to help two swimmers being pulled out into the ocean. The two swimmers were not surfing and got caught in the waves.
I read that the two wave hold down is one of the most dangerous to be caught in.

No problem, my afternoon is consisting of trying to stay awake, I fell asleep yesterday afternoon, then I was awake all night, now I need to stay up so I can sleep tonight.
    @curious cat:

I think that comment is a little harsh, like she said she trains professionals, GB is not a professional and was in an area he probably shouldn’t have been. I think that’s what made it dangerous for him the very fact he wasn’t a surfer and didn’t know what to do in that situation.
Like GB said on the Graham Norton show, he wanted to go back out but insurers would probably insist on a hospital trip. To me, reading that article, the language that woman used, the fact she took a pop at another actor, it sounds like she has a chip on her shoulder.

It is better than what’s on here.. The Debate. LOL
Also after these shows he seems very drained. They have to be exhausting. He’s always been animated and touching himself. Love when he rubs his inner thigh though. (winks) Noel was a dud. Great dad he’ll make! Damn, sometimes we just don’t want to know, huh?
whose glad he’s still home thinking he’s extending his stay there for a reason and that’s he has to return to the City of the Fallen Angel soon enough (for award shows) where there are more plastic people per square inch in that town than any other here but hopes he still loves the realness of New York City where his most beautiful place is that I’ve seen — I haven’t his other but would like to (in a magazine)

Just stopped by to wish all the JJ peeps a belated Happy New Year!
I see Butler is still dragging himself out of the clubs at ungodly hours. Good grief – I don’t know what the appeal is, but he has always had a taste for the skeevy night life. He looks like cr@p here, frail and drained. Hope he avoided the bodily fluids spray inside :X. Maybe that’s why he’s wearing a hat, and what appears to be a water-proof jacket. Next time, dude – bring a tarp.
He looked good at the premier, but he needs to upsize the suits just a bit. He is so active and physically expressive, that he needs a roomier cut – otherwise they pull awkwardly.
So Framo is still hot on his trail, I see. I’m amazed she didn’t just pull up a chair onstage at the Norton show. I will never get why a person will go to those lengths to get attention from, and any crumb of interaction with, a person who is essentially a stranger to them.
Anyhoo, I’m very glad Butler survived the waves – I’d miss the big guy. He’s never dull, that’s for sure. Looking forward to seeing Coriolanus soon. Enjoy your Sunday, JJrs!

@Joie de Vivre: Joie, no what little snow we got melted. We got a light dusting this morning and the sun is out and melting it. This has been a green winter so far in my area. Glad to hear hubby is feeling better.
When I would fidget my Grandmother would say to me sit still your like a f art in a mitten trying to get through the thumb. Gerry is like that and I agree it makes him all the more endearing.

Have to disagree with you on Noel, I love him and thought he was really funny, you have to remember a lot of what he says is tongue in cheek, he has a very dry sense of humour and a deadpan delivery, judging from the audience reaction they definitely got him.
