Gerard Butler: Surfing Accident Was A 'Close Call'

Gerard Butler ducks out of The Box nightclub on Friday (January 6) in London, England.

The night before, the 42-year-old Scottish actor attended a special screening of his new movie Coriolanus.

Gerard also recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show where he talked about his scary surfing accident while filming his other movie, Of Men and Mavericks, in Northern California.

“[The waves] just took me in, and I couldn’t get up. It was pretty hairy. It was maybe of of the few times that reports were not exaggerated. It was a pretty close call,” he shared.

“I was actually in the ambulance and wanted to go back, which was a little crazy. But [surfing is] pretty addictive,” Gerry added.

FYI: Gerard is wearing Joe’s Classic Fit with Rogue‘s leather biker jacket.

I got that I did. And I did laugh, often. He was funny. Just as my favorite poet said, “Jokes are profound.” There is a lot of truth behind them.

But maybe it was how he dissed Gerry about Wonderwall being “his” song when he meant it as a compliment? I’m biased there. LOL I like the bloke (Noel, Gerry I love). Got all his music. Used Wonderwall in my old story. Lyrics played (and still do but not as much and different kind now) a big part.

Just to update, it is now 2-0 to Celtic, it’s a great game too, although whoever decided it was a good idea to advertise Meryl Streep’s biopic of Thatcher during the half time ad break is a moron who wasted a shed load of cash….

Oh, got it! LOL See your point. Eek! Well, maybe to sell it to the viewing audience elsewhere perhaps? It is an amazing performance from what I’ve seen in the trailer. Will see regardless. She’s so funny, great talent. I adore her. She’s one cool woman indeed.

who is happy his team is winning who saw Michael Sheen in The Damed United wondering why when I did it got no traffic and now it is kind of dawning on me but love him as Tony Blair–he’s also such a snob in Midnight in Paris who is realistic when it comes to expectations regarding Gerry unlike a lot of his fans

I didn’t have good vibes for Noel either. I don’t know the guy at all except for his music which is good. When he said that about “his” song, my son said, “what a ****”. Gerry was giving the guy props. That is the new saying, That’s my song or that’s my team etc. I found Gerry to be his normal self during the show. Was it his best? Maybe not. But he was giving others props and telling good stories. I can’t get enough of the kilt story. And I thought he was just dramatic enough about the surfing accident. He always “plays’ well with others.

One of these days he’s going to get rough with Moira and break her heart. I just don’t find what she did appropriate at all. Way out of line for a fan.

    I loved Uggie btw!!

I love Meryl Streep too and I heard it’s a fantastic performance from her. This is why I have mixed feelings about seeing it, I lived through the latter part of Thatcher’s ‘reign’. I grew up in a mining village and my grandfather was a steelworker, I saw what she did to those industries and the impact it had on communities and families, they’re still suffering today, 20 years after she left office. It invokes such an emotion that I am reluctant to see a film celebrating her life. I just don’t think I could sit through it.

I feel ya. So sorry. Don’t blame you. I’m of course going to see it for her acting more than her story. I understand. Besides there are so many other great film out!

    @angelsrock:
I concur. He’s many of these to do, I suspect, and he could be more himself on this longer show. Yeah, Noel, while in spots funny (as they just seem to be so cheeky), he’s a singer not a comedian. And yes, Gerry was kind of a threat or something. I’m like, dude, he sings YOUR song over and over! The message of that song is great. I believe Gerry has a Wonderwall, and maybe Noel wants that song as just his? Dunno. LOL
    -
But Gerry, as always, was fun/fascinating to watch. His face is a symphony indeed. Kind of seeing him being quiet, listening, focusing, coming out the ether to speak again is very fascinating.
    -
I bet he is quite the dinner guest/partner but needs a good listener for a guest. ;o) He’s a babbling brook that needs a Dead Sea. He’s such a mystery. A gem, a unique gem who got tumbled. What’s so odd about this is how I used this term so often for my story character, and him (which are not related by the way as this is not the first story that was “fan fiction”). He’s a library too. I hope he sees The Artist, you too! Beginners is good with him in it too. He has dialog in that one. Darling.

the pictures are awful- he looks like a withered, dried up old man. Sorry but he needs to cut the hair and gain some muscle and a little fat. For gawds sake man get some sleep! I like him, but am hating watching him go down the path of so many that are rich and famous. I hope he finds something soon to give him peace and ground him. I have no idea of what is going on with him, just my opinion he seems to be looking in the wrong places for fulfillment. I feel the producers dropped the ball on his MGP effort. It could have been such a critical success for him, but they missed the opportunity to market it as such. Not sure what they were thinking. Hopefully Coriolanus will give him a little more clout professionally.

I agree with most of all you said here, but error on side of caution as to how he’s feeling in a few photos (and yes that coming from the Lace Reader). Yet it could be all you said and none of what I did! I just don’t judge him. Instead I accept him as is. I feel, like when most of us have stress, we fall back on old mannerisms.
    -
Feel he is far more grounded than a lot of actors. Otherwise would he still be on The Island? Know what I mean? Feel, in the way I do, he’s a good group that help him. Are shoulders for him to lean on. That he has life coaches, therapists, shrinks at his disposal. That he isn’t above checking into a clinic or spa if someone very close to him suggests it. Not that I feel he is anywhere near this, I’m just making a point.
    -
Feel he’s there on his own. Did we see Alan? He has a lot of contacts and ‘friends’ as in buddies, but his closest friends might not be the typical people one thinks. He doesn’t really run with the Hollywood crowd either. While he shows up where he feels he needs to, to keep his name in print and out there, that’s fine. I just prefer charity/fundraiser or movie premiers than night clubs. I just don’t put him down for doing this, regardless of what went on/goes on inside. I don’t think it is self-sabotaging all he’s done health/spirit/body-wise either. It’s a visual stimulant apparently. Why not? Men are visual. I feel he is very honest with the most important person he needs to be with, and that is him.
    -
Again, if he did not want to be seen he wouldn’t have. Maybe he wants opinions? Could be. (Hi Gerry) LOL Dunno. Feel the loveless sex might be catching up with him. But don’t feel he feels he’s ready for anything with his career in another surge, which is fine. As far as MGP goes, he got what he needed out of it, more than most actors: redemption and good reviews, and a chance to show not only what he’s made of but what he can bring to roles, depth, commitment and empathy.
    -
Again, feel he has deep emotional connections otherwise he’d be back in Sugar Town a long time ago. Glad to see him there. Makes me happy. It’s precious rain to his soul, and he’s precious to me. The past is gone, tomorrow never knows.

Most fan sites are. But most of what’s important is in their Shout Box. Some have access, deeper than others and post stuff within (the site itself which I’m not too cool with) but the GPS Tweet/FB stuff is in the Chat Box, which I don’t read any longer. What I ‘need’ LOL gets to me by the way it does.

I understand why peeps upset when they see photos of Gerry that show him in a bad light. I mean, he truly does look awful in these. But we just saw him looking sharp and healthy a few days ago. He didn’t look too thin, he didn’t look tired, and he didn’t look unhappy. I put the difference between these photos and the ones from the London premier down to the fact he he “seems” to be a moody guy. Hey, moods come and go. But over the years I’ve decided NOT to read into these photos or over analyze them. Could be bad angles, could be bad camera, could be grumpy, tired Gerry. That’s life!

Could just be a bad photo, but it seems there have been more bad ones than good ones than usual. He does clean up well when he has to, but I just get a vibe that he is going through a rough period personally. It could be my perception is wrong, hope so.

Back in and catching up on the posts so far today. In my opinion, GB didn’t appear any different to me on the Graham Norton Show then he usually does. The man doesn’t sit still. He definitely fidgets. He did it on Howard Stern’s show, I even remember him doing it in an MGP interview with Michelle Monaghan. He rubs his leg, picks at his clothes (lint??), touches his face, moves his legs and feet, etc. He didn’t really look tired or drugged to me either. When someone else is speaking, he just sits there (fidgeting) waiting to interject something into the conversation, but I don’t sense him ‘spacing out’ or anything like that. Bored? Perhaps on some level because he’s so energetic and always needs to move, but I don’t think there is anything more to it.

Moira? I think she’s harmless really. She seems like a nice woman, but did you see his face when she blurted out that the pic of him was taken in Hawaii? He was like “omg, you KNEW that?” LOL It was kinda funny, but he looked taken back by it—-but tried to do it in sort of a nice way.

As far as the pics above of him coming out of “The Box”, I think we can speculate until the cows come home on what is going on there, but really, and this has already been said, he just could have been tired and didn’t feel like smiling for the camera. Haven’t we all been in a store or out somewhere and saw an acquaintance or a friend and just didn’t feel like talking, smiling or being friendly? Just kinda looked at the ground or the other way to not be noticed and gone off in a different direction? I admit, I’ve done it. Sometimes you just aren’t in the mood to smile or wave or whatever. Maybe that’s all there was to it?
If he’s been in this club before, then obviously he knows what goes on inside and I think it was GFW that mentioned, if he REALLY didn’t want to be seen exiting the place, then he wouldn’t have been. I just think he didn’t feel like acknowledging the cameras. He’s an adult and he can do what he wants, when he wants and if he wants us to see him, we will and if not, then we won’t.

And on another note, I’m guessing Celtic won? That’ll be a nice celebration. I’m betting he will be heading back to CA soon since he’s due on the Leno show this Thursday. Maybe a quick stop in NYC again on the way? That would be great too and a good way to not have like a 10 hour flight back to CA!

I hope so too, but unfortunately we all go through rough periods. I think Gerry is tougher than peeps give him credit for. And IF there is a problem that’s making him look so glum, I’m pretty sure he’ll do what he has to do to get through it. Still, I get why people worry and wonder.

Not the first time I have read this statement. If you look at some of the reports from the surfing community they refer to his experience as just another day at the beach. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. It was just another surf experience to her where it was something altogether different for Butler. Plus producers have a lot of money involved in the project and they would have ambulances on standby. They wouldn’t want to lose one of their stars with so much on the line for them.

I thought Noel and Martin were the highlights of the show. Both have really easy demeanors and seemed much more relaxed and enjoying the show. Noel was hilarious IMO.
    .
Frammie – ugh is all I can say. I noticed how Butler threw a couple of underhanded swipes her way but she was totally clueless. Graham also seemed to understand her place (read annoyance) in Gerry’s world. I felt for her though that she didn’t realize she was the brunt of the joke not laughing along with them.
    .
Noticed Butler did an eyeroll and the nervous picking at his mustache when the convention was mentioned. I really felt for him at that point.

–You think he wants opinions and peeps to say “Hi” to him? Maybe, I guess . . . he’s difficult to read at times. So, “Hi Gerry!” As far as opinions go . . . well, as many have said here GB is a grown man and can do what he wants. Although I prefer the shots of him biking, coming from the gym, etc. rather than these recent pics apparently coming out of some club. But hey, everyone needs to have fun . . . not sure about that type of fun (lol). Actually, I’d like to see him leaving a store pushing a grocery cart (lol) but I guess that wouldn’t coincide with his image.

  22. 147
    Can'tGetEnough Says:

@GFW: The wording JJ used didn’t help it either—”Gerard Butler ducks out of The Box nightclub”. That, along with the pics, leads the reader to speculate that he was up to no good, not wanting to be seen, trying to be secretive in some way because something was wrong, etc.

  23. 148
    GFW Says:

By opinions, maybe on what he was doing or how he looked? Such a contrast to the day before? Some much of this could be simply staged as well?! Or he went in, had a (lot) of fun and got some sort of release? Maybe he wants to make someone mad? Break up with another girl? Who knows! That we are not privy to, and why these kind of clubs exist, and for simply fun and good times as well. He looked really wiped out is all.
    -
He apparently did not wish to stick around in his hotel room, and he could. He did need to be seen and was. He knew he had something to do today, the game. He went home and crashed. Maybe he simply doesn’t sleep well? Maybe he never has but after this accident it is worse? No, pushing a shopping cart would not work the image he has crafted, this one. Hmmm. Feel it sad he feels compelled to have an image at all. What’s wrong with just him?

Good point! Also feel he wants to test people, like his fans. Will they judge him? Scold him? Be ugly towards it? Who knows how long he was there? Could have gone in, looked about, and left? My guess is not but he is, as we all know, an adult who chooses what to do for the most part, with his (what little can be his during promoting films) down-time.

    -
Then their is the shows, and by all accounts are racy. Think he wants to see something he may never have seen? Doubt that’s possible, but maybe not? Think normal is what he has lost touch with, and craves more than many think. Either way you’re right JJ tossed the negative word out there and the first part of this tread ran with it.
