Oprah Winfrey: Leadership Academy Graduation!

Oprah Winfrey attends the inaugural graduation at her Leadership Academy for Girls on Saturday (January 14) at Henley on Klip, South Africa.

“I’m one proud momma today,” the 57-year-old entrepreneur told the class of 2011, while also praising the teachers, administrators, social workers, psychologists, and family members who had helped the girls reach the milestone.

“I always held the vision that this day was possible,” Oprah added, the Associated Press reports.

The talk show host invested a reported $40 million to build the school for underprivileged South African girls, which opened in January 2007.

    Down the streets from Harpos’ Studio in Chicago they are kids going to hell in a bread basket, but Oprah didn’t think they deserve a school such as the one she built in South Africa, maybe in Oprah’s mind set there is no other black child like herself, from America’s poor black families who is as deserving or capable as she is. When God made Oprah he broke the mold.

    Maybe if black ppl in America vote and take responsibility for their community you would not need Oprah money. The difference is black in america have choices,but in the hood if you’re book smart you’re label as trying to be white. these kids are eager to learn. you go to Africa or the Caribbean and you see kids walk miles to get to a school some don’t have much to eat,but they want to learn.

    @xedos:

    Some people don’t have a lot of options here (US)…maybe they have limited access to resources and I can imagine that they do want to learn. Some unfortunately do not. It’s not just in the hood, hell I lived in a predominantly white neighborhood and I was still labeled that way…Turnout for Blacks has increased in the last presidential election (not sure about other elections), so at least that’s a start. But I agree that more need to vote, but I think more Americans need to vote.

    It is fantastic that the school got to this point considering all the scandals that surrounded it over the years. Well done to the class of 2011, this is so needed in our underprivillaged country. Thanks to Oprah for her generosity to Africa and the world at large. Lets hope these girls understand the opportunities they have now going forward and use them – unlike the majority of our youth!
