Kelly Clarkson: Etta James Tribute at Radio City Music Hall!

Kelly Clarkson belts out “I’d Rather Go Blind” as a tribute to the late Etta James during her Stronger tour performance at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday (January 21) in New York City.

The 29-year-old singer got her big break by singing an Etta James song, “At Last”, during her audition for the first season of American Idol.

Etta passed away on Friday (January 20) due to complications from Leukemia.

“This isn’t ‘At Last’ because everyone really covers that and so I wanted to do my favorite, actually. My favorite song is ‘I’d Rather Go Blind.’ So, this is for Etta!” she said of selecting a song to add to her set list as a tribute to the singer.

Sorry, not a kelly Clarkson fan, she sings in one voice and her music is boring! Plus her performances are so boring! Don’t get the appeal! It’s like because she was America’s first idol she can do no wrong so they give her all these gigs when there is other and better talent out there! jmo

  • Amy

Obviously someone who knows nothing about music! One voice? Give me a break! She can sing Blues, ballads, rock, pop, Gospel, can sing low, high, soft and belt it out! You probably think Britney Spears is a good singer! And boring? She’s a singer, not there on stage to dance around like the aforementioned who pushes play on a cd and jumps around.

People like her because she has talent and has remained down-to-earth in a business famous for phonies! Do some research befroe you criticize next time! 20 million people around the globe can’t be wrong!

@Bernadine: With your logic, the first winners of “The Voice” and “X-Factor USA” should be getting all kinds of gigs too strictly because they’re the first so everyone thinks they can do no wrong.

All I can say is Kelly you go girl!!

This is an amazing performance!! So much emotion brought to the song, Etta James is listening from above and is proud of ya :)

  • cindy

I’ll give her props she can sing but she is no Etta and does not have the emotions to convey that song. She’s a good singer though props for her doing it. I want someone who has been through what Etta has been through in the past you feel emotions in her songs Kelly just sings it . Must be because her life hasn’t been rough and she’s a sweetheart but I don’t feel the song when she sings this one..

  • Ankka

    That was incredible! loved it!

  • tatiana

@cindy Kelly puts a lot of emotion to every song she sings, so much emotion that sometimes she end up crying, maybe the cuality of this video doesn’t do her justice. And kelly’s life has been rough

  • joe

“They” don’t get her gigs. She’s built a career on her own. She was the first Idol winner and could have easily had a quick 15 minutes of fame, but she’s made a long lasting career.

She’s commonly referred to as one of the best singers in Pop by various credible sources. Esquire Magazine called her “The best voice in the history of pop music”.

She doesn’t have “one voice”. She can sing blues, rock, pop, dance, country, R&B, classical, opera, broadway, jazz, big band….any genre.

  • joe

Kelly definitely has the emotions for that song, and almost any song she sings. She’s been through a good bit in her life.

you sound bitter…you are entitled to an opinion, but when that opinion is so wrong and biased, it is obviously skewed, it loses its credibility. Troll somewhere else

    RIP Etta

  • RachelSun

Agree w/ all ya’ll. Etta James was one of a kind but Kelly Clarkson did justice to that song. She can sing all types of music.

You’re clearly not a Kelly fan otherwise you would know that Kelly has been through a fair bit of hardship in her life too and she’s only 29 years old. Yes it may not be the exact same things as Etta, but in reality everyone goes through the same hurdles and emotions; they just look a little different for each person. Kelly is one of the most emotive performers in the industry.
