Marion Cotillard & Joaquin Phoenix: Filming in NYC

Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix get into character on set on Monday (January 30) in New York City.

The 36-year-old actress and her 37-year-old costar are working together on a James Gray film called Low Life.

Marion plays Sonja, a Polish woman trying to emigrate to the United States.

Here’s a synopsis of the film: “[Sonya's] American dream turns into a nightmare. While sailing to Ellis Island and a new start, her sister grows deathly ill and she is forced to trade sexual favors for medicine and food to keep her sister alive. Once they land, she is warned to keep quiet about what happened … With no place to go, she falls prey to a charming sleazebag (Phoenix), who persuades her to turn tricks in New York.”

    I don’t want to be judgamental. All I care about is JP in this and his collaboration with James Gray.
    Marion seems to have broken through the wall that separates Hollywood and European cinema. She might not be the most talented European/non European actress around but she has an Oscar. I haven’t seen that movie she has recieved Oscar for, perhaps she stood out the most and perhaps she did her best to portray the character. However it seems to me that most actors after recieving Oscar start to be exploited by the industry and everythey they do from the moment they stood on stage is to either overact (they search for deeper, non-mainsteram, art house, indie roles and really overdo the character ) or work half-heartedly (look for mainstream pictures and work for big paychecks ). Oscar does seem to make a damge to their brain and make harm to their talent. Only a few actors nowadays seem to get in the character and off the character easily, even after having 14 or something Oscar nominations and winning 2 of them – like Meryl Streep. she doesn’t seem to care whether she’ll be nominated or not. she’s just good at waht she does.
    I am not sure about Marion’s case. But she’s deifnately exploited by the industry. I dodn’t get her character’s part in Inception? Why it had to be her to play the Maul’s character? Was it just Chris’ wish to work with her? Just because the movie filmed several scenes in France and the name of the character means bad in French – there is nothing else that indicated that Marion had to play her. And why the hell she plays a Polish character in this one? I don’t get it.
    still sure the movie will turn out great.

    @WAlterBisho[:

    you are right.

    it’s the CURSE of the OSCAR.

  • hmmmmmm

    i always wondered:

    how does diane kruger feel everytime she sees marion?

    marion is dating and having a baby with the ex-husband of diane kruger.
    And on top of that marion got an oscar.

    but diane career is going nowhere.
    it doenst help that diane is dating that , wooden, loser of a tv-actor , joshua jackson.

    diane must be so jealous of marion.

    @hmmmmmm

    I don’t get what you mean? Guillaume and Diane were divorced for over 2 years, before Guillaume and Marion began dating.

    And by reports, Diane says that she is very good friends with Guillaume. And with regards to their film careers, Marion seems really dedicated to her career, albeit that she is a new mum – frankly I give her props for being a full time mother and still having filming projects on the go. I can’t comment on Diane Kruger, as I don’t follow her career, but I don’t think that she would be jealous of Marion. I mean she has stated that her marriage to Guillaume did not work because they did not “live together” during their marriage, and yet they have managed to stay good friends after their divorce.

    First of all Marion Cotillard is one of the most talented and versatile actresses of this generation. Her performance of Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose was one of the best performances on screen. Since then she has taken some great films in the USA and France working with an excellent list of actors and directors. All of you who say she can’t act obviously know nothing at all about the art of acting and what it entails. She is a true beauty!
