Sacha Baron Cohen Banned from Oscars 2012: Report

UPDATE: A rep for the Academy confirms that Sacha will be allowed at the ceremony, in full costume! “We’re thrilled to have him and he’ll be on the red carpet dressed as the Dictator,” co-producer Brian Glazer told E!. Another rep has said he will be at the show, but not in costume. Tune in Sunday (February 26) to find out!

UPDATE: An Academy spokesperson tells THR, “We have not banned him. We’re just waiting to hear what he’s going to do.” The mag adds that the Academy “is making it clear that [Sacha] is not welcome to use the red carpet as a platform for a promotional stunt.”

There’s a chance Sacha Baron Cohen may not be allowed to attend Sunday’s Oscars.

The 40-year-old comedian reportedly had wanted to walk down the red carpet in full costume as his title character from his upcoming film, The Dictator – a proposal the Academy wasn’t thrilled about.

“Unless they’re assured that nothing entertaining is going to happen on the red carpet, the Academy is not admitting Sacha Baron Cohen to the show,” a source told Deadline.

FYI: Sacha is an Academy member and Hugo, which he co-starred in, is up for Best Picture at the award show.

he’s so hot

He truly is disgusting. An Arab Jew who tries to dehumanize Arabs and Muslims at every chance he can get…….. This is not comedy.

Good. It is the Oscars. Not SBC night, share the night with eeryone else and dont promote your comedy. It is tacky.
Oscars are not about you. They are a coming together of all the great movies created this year, It is stupid and tacky to want to do such a thing.

“we are just waiting to hear what he is going to do”
I guess freedom of speech depends on the content…

@Creed: I hae to disagree. For an actor being nominated or invited to the show is self promotion all the way down to China. They just walk the red carpet and do interviews promoting themselves an even some presenters have movies coming out this year. That’s why Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake presented last year.

pr stunt…tons of free press over nothing

It is not the breech of freedom of speech . I support the Academy’s decision because this is a wrong platform to use and advertise your movie . This is not circus, it is supposed to be a dramatic and glamorous even, let’s keep it that way.

That sums up the Oscars for me!
Don’t worry – be assured – nothing entertaining is going to happen!!!

…He’s an extremely unfunny racist. A talentless hack who shouldn’t have a career. I never understood why people watch his movies.

Why not? The Oscars are all about a bunch of people in “costumes” promoting their careers.

@mel: I think it would be appropriate and hilarious if he would do a skit and present an award in character. However I think it would jsut be annoying and distracting to make the red carpet all about you

He was never banned. Nobody is even thinking about his film or him. By creating this fake controversy him film now has attention.

Oh Sacha, you should have kept improving after Ali G, which was the pinnacle of your career. Borat and The Dictator? Seriously not funny. Not even mildly witty or intelligent. Boring.

What a bunch of party-poopers. They should let him entertain us.

This looks like the first funny thing he has done. They should let him come in with his dictator outfit and have his people taze celebrities. Then they should let the new Old Spice guy pummel him with PA PA PA PA POOOWWWWEEEEERRRR!

Sachs needs to go away. He is not funny and his movies are stupid. His movie Bruno was a setback for the gay rights movement. Cornering a republican lawmaker in a hotel room while wearing inappropriate attire will not help anyone. I hope he catches something fatal and then is left in a field to rot, like his bad movies.
