Gerard Butler Books A 'Brilliant' Role

Gerard Butler has signed on for the diamond-heist thriller Brilliant.

The 42-year-old Scottish actor replaces Eric Bana, who was previously in talks for the lead role. The film will reunite Gerard with his The Ugly Truth director, Robert Luketic.

The project centers around “a small-time criminal who partners with a female thief to pull off a daring diamond heist,” Variety‘s Showblitz reports, adding that producers are still searching for the female lead.

Gerard‘s other upcoming projects include the action thriller Hunter Killer, Thunder Run, and How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Wondering if Butler had to go to rehab before the contract for this new film could be signed? which would suggest that industry insiders know he is a bit on the edge.
I agree with Bystander about the B-list status – Leno said some things to him that no one would have even contemplated saying to Clooney, Pitt & co.

Well done Gerry! Good to see the industry back you so quickly, and strongly with such an endorsement just after your embracing recovery!
    -
He should be proud of this. They are proud and eager to sign him. This is very respectful! It shows they have faith and believe in him like I do!
    -
I’m so very excited that Gerry has something new lined up for the general public to see! And so soon which speaks volumes!
    -
That no one is back down or away from him. They stand behind him! The timing of this announcement and the offer to work spoke louder than a roaring cheer in behalf! It works like that in that nutty business of his!

The Ellen DeGeneres Show!? Great news! They were cute together back i the day he made her feel like a woman again. ;o) … if just for the few seconds he showed her his tongue (blushing) but longer than that too.

That’s a terrific idea! Many don’t understand the pressures he’s under. While it wasn’t exactly the proper route to take, it isn’t an uncommon one. Think it an amazing idea for him to face the ‘white lady’ and say no to its face. Many will be watching.

Rosamund Pike is another. Emily Blunt too. Same reason for Abbey. Truly subtlety banking off his, well, unsubtly! This sounds like a fun project. He needs more fun in his life, less “action” now! Terrific news. God exists! Wish this could get the green light to go first!! I do.

Don’t think Gerry screens his ‘dates’ ahead of time. JMO He’s too spontaneous for that. Nice try Brooke, I mean, mimi. Gerry doesn’t do much ‘normal’. Not an insult it’s just his high I.Q. gets in the way. He’s driven by intelligence, but not always common sense.

@Reviews: Addiction is a disease and like any disease you listen to the medical experts and you do what it takes to get better. Millions of people including other actors and producers and heads of state have to take time off their work/careers whether to treat their cancer or other ailments or get treatment for mental health issues or get their addiction under control because it is a matter of life and death. Ignore at your own peril.

You do not have to go to parties to do business deals. There is a thing called business meetings, phones. You have those overpaid agents and managers who are supposed to be doing that work for you.

It is not like he is a man who is on the verge of being homeless if he heaven forbid took time off. Instead it looks like Mr. I’m Just out of Too Short A Stint in Rehab is taking on another film and is going to throw himself into such a schedule of work he is setting himself up for another burn out/meltdown. I think he is so terrified that if he sits still his career will evaporate that he may be doing things that will guarantee it.

    Color me skeptical and perplexed.

    @I was:

Gerry was just too tall and not broody enough for Burton. I think Russell Crowe would be spot on!
    -
    -
Totally agree. What’s that book? Ferocious Love? Good movie title too if they can afford it. Rusty rocks! Have said so (that I agree Crowe should play Burton) and on his IMDb page a few times. Also Adrien Brody should play John Lennon in a movie chronicling his last three days. That’s the title too.

@colormeskeptical: Thank you! You made some valid points. Going to parties and nightclubs is the worst thing Gerry can do. Even if he stays clean/sober. There’s an expression recovering addicts (me included) use.

If you hang out in a barber shop…..eventually you’ll end up with a haircut.

But, I disagree about the work. Work , for him, I think is a good thing. As long a he keeps stress in check. Because boredom and idle time ALSO makes people use. I remember Charlie Sheen was quite vocal about boredom being the #1 reason he used cocaine…..

    Good Morning, JJers!!!!!

You know you don’t know what he’s doing ‘out’ which could involve out patient counseling, intensive therapy sessions, even being monitored or chaperoned like he was with his jogging buddy?
    -
Feel facing his fears and temptations at these functions all him. Fear’s healthy by the way.
    -
Not sure how I know this, but don’t think Gerry’s ever in idle mode! He might wish to dump some of those ‘friends’ of his though and friend up again. Working is when he functions better… seems like that cycle is kicking in again!

  19. 119
    Toronto Says:

@GFW: But….facing fear and temptation this EARLY in recovery is what’s so bad. It’s NOT healthy. Why risk slipping?

Yes, eventually he should be able to go to functions (especially if he’s nominated for an award!), industry gatherings, etc…..

But going to bars and nightclubs is just plain stupid at ANY point for an addict/alcoholic….

    Oh dear 1 Says:

I am prepared to be flamed and  negged into oblivion and called every name under the sun for this. But apart from HTTYD 2, his next slew of films don’t look that promising critically wise. Perhaps Hunter Killer and Thunder Run will do well commercially because they are
boysie action flicks, but critically highly unlikely .The rest seem like general film fodder. I could be wrong though, maybe in  PTF one or two of the other cast members might pull out stand out performances, or who knows maybe GB  himself might do something special, wonders never cease.  Good and bad. He’s kind of playing to type in that movie. However,  if none of them are breakouts critically and commercially -acting wise he’ll be heading for the small screen, supporting roles and regular trips across the atlantic to make smaller British films.  Potentially, that could be a really good thing. It would go a helluva of a long way to improving he’s acting skills, which compared to his contemporaries are really below par.  From watching what’s been happening over the last couple of weeks,  I now do think he is desperate to stay in Hollywood. I think he wants to be on the level of  Pitt, Clooney and Craig, but he’s too lazy or too arrogant to put in the right kind of work it takes to do it i.e. going back to acting classes or getting a really good acting coach. Or may he does do classes but he sure ain’t listening to his tutors. Or maybe he’s simply not that talented as an actor. You can tell at the moment in the industry he’s regarded as pretty good box office espescially in the DVD market, and an limited actor, that compounded by his shallow lifestyle means he’s just not taken any where near as seriously as other three stars I mention- to name but a few.  I defy anyone to come on this site and say Leno would  make the comment he made to GB to Pitt, Clooney or Craig, at their level of respect and success,  it wouldn’t happen. That alone should tell even the most zealot of GB fans how much respect he has with real power players in HW.

I second and third you ladies. Keeping busy is always a great solution.
    .
But work can be a double-edged sword. I’m not familiar with how he conducts himself on set and if he was supplied in the past on sets. He needs to hire a sponsor/bodyguard for the set. Someone who will not only protect him from the public but also from those willing to enable his bad habits.

I don’t like the contagion effect and affect this place has on people. I see it. I think your anger/skepticism is fear. I get that. But you don’t know Gerry. Not that I do, but I don’t find his showing up at the Vanity Fair thing odd or wrong or bad or tempting himself, just the opposite. He’s an intense man. He’s also hard-headed and fixated and stubborn. So it fits into that. You can’t turn a zebra into a horse.
    -
As for me? I’m only here to support Gerry not that I need to be here. He needs support not whatever this is… and it isn’t that.

    @Oh dear 1:

    .
    He is quite the conundrum.
    .
After seeing Machine Gun Preacher I’m definitely feeling he has talent, but not trained talent. There were moments in that film that he was brilliant and then there were others where he overacted like a bull in a china shop. It’s hard to say what will strike the Academy’s eye… I mean Hugo, really??? So different from years past where any film geared toward children could only hope to win in animation or for best song.
    .
There were times I truly forgot he was Butler and he became Sam Childers. I will say, not once did I think that Michelle Monohaugh was anything but Lynn Childers. Sometimes Butler just doesn’t hone in on the finesse that will totally bury him in the character.
    .
My favorite scene… where the little boy comes into his room and sits next to him on the bed. He let the kid carry the scene which was what it needed.
    .
So who knows what will spark the academy’s attention. Any of these movies may for any strange reason end up considered. Just look at the best picture nominees from this year and you have such a diverse group. So never say never is what I say…

    .
Your post shows how naive you are to what real addiction is… Drug addiction KILLS people. It is not something you play at. PERIOD. You either recover or you die. There are no other choices IMO…
