Couldn’t find a Native American actor to play Tonto? Is that why the face is painted, the studio knew he couldn’t pass completely? Looks like the studio anticipates some blowback from Native American groups (and the negative press that comes with it). Dollar bet this Tonto is bi-racial to explain away European features. Taylor Lautner caught heat for taking the Jacob role in Twilight, he had to come out and say he has Native American ancestry to justify his casting.

^ Johnny Depp IS part Native American…

Johnny Depp looking like a Jack Sparrow 2.0

  • c

geeze. more of the same from J. depp.

  • Gossipgirl

Thanks Hollywood for butchering and ruining yet another piece of my favorite childhood memories.

  • GGGive

    Love johnny!!!

  • Moo Cow

    Looks very, very bad!

  • Melissa B

@Derpina: I love Johnny but thats what I thought. It reminds me of Jack Sparrow. And why all the face paint? Did Tonto always look like that>?

  • Mejay

I second that! I love Johnny Depp but cmon! Was Adam Beach not available lol, Johnny looks more like the Crow. And before I catch the heat, I know Johnny has Cherokee blood, but so does half of America; and when you first saw Johnny Depp way back in his 21 Jumpstreet days, no one said “wow who’s that new great looking Native actor”; he’s not known as a Native actor, he’s a white guy. He maybe pulled it off in The Brave, but this is just ridiculous. I’m a critic, but still a fan.

  • jn

he reminds me of jack sparrow in potc 2

  • [~Fug Face Man!ston~]

…why does jack sparrows face painted white?
…it seriously looks like a bad comedy. `i hope they’re not doing to this what channing tatum & jonah hill did to 21 jump street.

  • A

@Mejay: That’s the thing though, half of America DON’T have native american ancestry but say they do. White Americans have more black ancestry from slavery (something like 5%) in them than Native American…whom they shot like dogs hence why there aren’t as many of them today.

  • okay

    Sparrow > Crow

  • G

    This is a comedy, right?

  • Mejay

I agree with you. I was being sarcastic in saying that half of Americans have Cherokee blood. It has been my experience that people who claim to have Native blood always say that they’re part Cherokee, not Dakota, Zuni, Dine, Tewa, or any of the other hundreds of tribes in the US, always Cherokee.

  • no

After all of the ridiculous, unforgivable things that Johnny has said and done over the last couple of years, he will never again get another dollar from me at the box office.
I hope that this movie tanks. He was box office poison before POTC, and with all of his recent flops it looks like he is heading that way again.
    Such an ignorant @ss.
Oh, and as someone else said…almost every American, especially those born in the south and central parts of the country, has a bit of Cherokee blood. Me included. But there is no way that I would take a job away from a TRUE Native American. Johnny should be asamed of himself. For many reasons, but this one especially.

  • no

    So true.
My ‘Cherokee’ blood comes from my Kentucky great grandmother. Her mother was full blood Native American, but back then you hid what you truly were. The name ‘Cherokee’ became a catch all for anyone with native blood. We tried to do some research to find out her true tribal community, bu there were no records available. It’s a shame that the real histories became buried by prejudice.

What’s with the hat? Tonto never wore a crow??? LOL

  • http://website,computer Dave From Canada

It would actually be Skocking to see Johnny Depp playing a normal looking character in a movie(I think something got stuck in his brain when he did Edward Scissorhands) His Tonto doesn’t look like an Indian, or scarely even human I’d love to listen to him and his analyst talk together.

  • http://website,computer Dave From Canada

P.S. Remember the movie The Eagle Has Landed? In this photo it looks like a crow died on his head and just kind of stayed there. It’s so bad that it’s funny.

  • JustThinkin’

Depp looks ridiculous. I guess he is playing Tonto as one of his buffoonish, cartoon characters.

All of his non-POTC or Tim Burton films tank. Look what he did to “The Tourist”.

I can’t believe Disney gave them $215 million dollars for this mess!

  • brenda are obviously a Hateful”.you and the other @Just Thinkin.,anyway I don’t care what you and the other say..,Johnny is a lot of things but you can’t deny that he is a truly and an AmaZing actor, and he is not fake like other and he doesn’t LIVE FOR THE CAMERAS and FAME.And Johnny Depp is one of the OF THE HIGHEST PAID ACTORS IN THE WOLD with MANY better before say something stupid.! His next movie will be successful !

  • Art

Follywood. Did the crow crap on his face?
