Meryl Streep & Norman Reedus: 'Bully' Screening!

Meryl Streep arrives at the Bully screening on Tuesday (March 20) at The Paley Center for Media in NYC.

The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus, who brought along his son Mingus, also came out to support Lee Hirsch‘s new documentary.

Thousands have signed an online petition urging the Motion Picture Association of America to change its R rating so that students are able to watch it.

“Kids want to see this movie, and they have to see this movie,” producer Harvey Weinstein told the Washington Post. “If they see it, it makes the concept of a bully uncool.”

FYI: The screening was sponsored by Bing and JP Morgan Chase & Co.

Hate to say it but with a name like Mingus Reedus I’m guessing the kid gets bullied a bit himself…

    Sara Says:

My son is autistic and was bullied for half the school year on the bus and the school and the bus driver did not tell me for months! My son is considered non verbal autistic and was unable to tell me what was going on. It was the most horrible thing as a parent I have faced so far and since both children were autistic, they just let it continue, even when the boys started fighting on the playground. If you think you’re kids are safe at school, think again.

Sorry about your son, Sara. I, myself was bullied mercilessly and the scars and deep mistrust of people never goes away. This movie is SO IMPORTANT for kids to see, and I hope everyone here will sign the petition to lower its “R” rating so it can be shown in schools, where it can make a difference.

    STOMP Out Bullying Says:

Kudos to the celebrities who support this film!!

As the leading anti-bullying organization in the country we are deeply disappointed that the MPAA has chosen to rate this movie R and won’t budge on changing it, as they have with other films. Whatever their reason was for changing other ratings, they are not thinking about America’s children on this one. And the Parents Television Council is taking the same stand. All of this says one thing — these people are not taking the issue of bullying seriously.

But — we take it seriously, Lee Hirsch and Harvey Weinstein take it seriously, Katy Butler who was a victim of bullying and who created the petition takes it seriously, Meryl Streep, Ellen Degeneres, Johnny Depp and Norman Reedus take it seriously, Rep Mike Honda and other politicians take it seriously, the mothers who call our office every day in tears take it seriously, the fathers who don’t know what to do to help their kids take it seriously, the over 100 kids who email us every week not knowing what to do take it seriously, the over 1600 students and the 49 we saved from suicide on our HelpChat line since June take it seriously, and the parents of all of the kids who took their lives as a result of bullying take it seriously.

The fact that the MPAA is doing this sends a strong message to America’s children –they don’t take children’s safety seriously and that is very sad.

Children are who this movie is about. Children appear in the movie. The issue is about children of all ages. Children MUST see this film!
