Salma Hayek: Acne Caused 'Severe, Severe Depression'

Salma Hayek rocks Roland Mouret on the cover of Lucky‘s May 2012 issue, on newsstands April 10.

Here’s what the 45-year-old actress had to share:

On her skin struggles: “You want to talk about bad skin? I had acne. And this acne was so bad, it sent me into a severe, severe depression. Like I couldn’t leave the house. I’d wake up in the morning and lie there and touch my face before I got up, just to prepare myself to look in the mirror! The next stage with that sort of depression is food: too little, or too much. Guess what I did? I mean, I was fat and broken out, I couldn’t leave the house and I couldn’t pay the rent!”

On Botox: “Trust me I’ve been tempted – but I resist! think about what happens to your muscles – and your skin – if you’re sick and don’t move for a few days. It all atrophies! Plus, if you freeze a muscle in your face, other muscles have to compensate! And once you stop, what does that look like? You know Latin people? African-American people? How our skin ages more slowly? Even though we’re dramatic, we move our faces, we eat higher- fat foods, we’re the ones with fewer wrinkles—it makes you wonder.”

On pal Demi Moore: “[I’m] not like Demi. She’s so disciplined, I wish I could be like that … You watch, Demi will be back. She’s an inspiration to all women.”

Salma sounds like a very positive person and I’m very glad that she got over her derpression. For those of you out there suffering from depression, DON’T wait for it to go away – get help for it as soon as possible. There’s all sorts of help available out there!

  • hmmm

As a white girl, I’m wondering how to take her comment about black and hispanic skin not aging so much while the white skin ages more. Not quite sure how to take this, as it’s leaving a bad taste in my mouth. It is generally correct, darker skins are much more tolerant of the abuses of the sun, and are generally oilier, but still…it’s the way she said it, with, “It makes me wonder…”, it sounds like she’s blaming it on our lifestyles, somehow? Not cool.

  • latina

wow so true! I had perfect skin as a teen (while others not so much..) then around 21 I started to get sporadic breakouts and it really put me in a depression and I started wanting to stay in because I was embarrassed. I can totally relate to Salma! I know some may say its “selfish” or oh get over it its just a pimple or w/e but when you go from perfect skin to breakouts, it puts a damper on your self esteem big time. :( I sometimes think teen acne would have been better than adult acne, when you are trying to start your life! Its messes things up! ugh.

  • Looselipz

I worked with her on a film in 1996. She still had bad skin. It’s amazing how photo shop can fix just about anything..with her bone structure she takes great pictures…in person, no make-up, another story…by the way, e ate breakfast together and she could put away a plate of bacon, eggs and toast with no problem…but it was rumored in later years she got very extreme about her diet, often having her own food brought to meetings at restaurants…a real Diva.

  • BEAN

@hmmm: “Even though we’re dramatic, we move our faces, we eat higher- fat foods”….. Eh consider the opposite of that, it doesn’t sound like she is insulting “white lifestyle” at all.
    And besides it’s true.

  • Hitler

I’m latin, I’m white and I look way younger. It’s not about skin color but quality.

  • Mikaela

I totally agree with her, as a Latin woman our skin age slowly then most. She did not offend anybody with her statement. She’ gorgeous and a great role model.

  • BEAN

@Hitler: It is about skin colour, actually, and nothing to do with quality. That is the statement she is making (even though people with more melanin eat more fatty foots …). Saying it’s to do with “quality” is actually more offensive. It’s simply to do with the amount of melanin in our skin for the most part. Nothing to do with quality or how we look after helps, though of course that certainly helps.

  • BEAN

@BEAN: look after ourselves*…… so really nobody should be offended by it AT ALL. Be happy with yourself. There are all kinds of illnesses that being white, black or latino, or even jewish makes you prone to. It’s not racist.

  • A

@BEAN: Yay for generalizations huh! No, it’s not true that all latin and black people eat high fat foods. Ever been to Africa? Ever been to East Africa? They eat very green, spicy food, no fat. If she is talking specifically about African Americans and Mexicans she should make that clear because otherwise it sounds ignorant.
The only thing she is right about is SKIN COLOR, the more melanin you have, the better you age. Simples.

  • kiki

If by Demi being disciplined she means obsessed with not eating, working out 24/7 and going under the knife, thanks but no thanks. That’s hell not happiness.
Salma may not do botox, but she sure does other dermatologic procedures and treatments, chemical peels, hyaluronic acid, this and that, all them celebs do it.

  • Glow

@Hmmm: There’s nothing to wonder about. What she stated is a fact. African-Americans, Latinos and also Asians all have skin that generally ages very well….without even trying. Also, with proper skin care we age even better. I’m 40-something and at times I’ve been mistaken for at least 15-16 years younger.

  • BEAN

@A: Im reiterating what she said, actually, and it in fact not a generalisation. I think it’s you who needs to do your research. Also please don’t talk to me about Africa, I am African.

  • Hitler

@BEAN: I think you are wrong. Look at white or tanned asians. It’s the same. She’s just making the comparisson with African-American as she could make it with Asians.
Of course diets and lifestyle help.

  • greta

Okay, Salma, so you think whites are less dramatic, move their faces less and eat lower fat foods??? Clearly you haven’t lived in the US! Why would we move our faces less?! Why would we be any less dramatic? And for heaven’s sake, everyone knows that we eat the fattiest foods in the world, and have the highest rate of obesity, with the exception of some relatively tiny countries in the South Pacific. And I’d like to know exactly what she’s “wondering”.

  • Glow

@BEAN: says….”the more melanin you have, the better you age.” Agreed. That’s the absolute truth and a fact well stated. I’m a testament to it.

  • A

@BEAN: I am from a country in East Africa and LIVE HERE so yes, I do know what i’m talking about.
If she is talking specifically about African Americans then yes, she’s right, but there are black people with different cultures, food, languages etc
We don’t eat food high in fat where i’m from and we’re naturally slim/thin.

  • Jasmine

Oh please. Eva Mendes is a latina actress and she looks like she’s a 40 year old woman. Not every single Latina is blessed with ageless skin like Ms. Hayek. But you have to admit, Salma is GORGEOUS!

  • Jasmine

Oh my! I just looked up Eva’s age. She IS almost a 40 year old woman. Hot damn ok… nevermind. I look like an ahole sorry! But she looks every bit of her age, Salma doesn’t

Sidenote: WTH is Ryan Gosling doing with Eva?? Crazy!

  • Hitler

Caucasians (‘white people’) have a tendency to age faster, die earlier and get more illnesses. That’s why they are more prone to be extinguished.

  • BEAN

@A: Well great for you – Im not from there. And she stated AFRICAN AMERICANS, not black people – so you’re still complaining for no reason.

  • Jenn

    Glow, get over yourself.

  • d

I must be a freak of nature because I am white, type 1 skin, porcelain white and people never ever guess my true age. People always think I’m 10 years younger than I am. i think it has to do with genes more than a skin color or type.

  • Jenn

And Hitler #20, you need to get educated and read statistics on disease and mortality rates.

  • jon

@Glow: you also tend to have a pizza face. Oily skin means lots of acne, just like Salma.

  • TexasLovin

@Jasmine Eva Mendes looks older than she is IMO but she probably still looks better than you

  • Glow

@Jenn: getting over myself is not necessary. I’m only stating what IS a fact of my life. Nobody is saying that there aren’t exceptions out there (in ALL ethnic groups), however, you can’t change what is a fact. People are getting angry for no reason.

  • review

keep dreaming ladies..only good genes will make you look younger. Healthy lifestyle also helps a bit.

  • Glow

@Jon: I’ve never had acne dear.

  • ladyb

I’m sure I will get a lot of thumbs down but black skin is the only skin that do not age as fast (no wrinkles, blah blah)…I see older latina women and they age quickly even more than white women sometimes. But Salma looks great for her age..she is one of the few exceptions.

  • A

@ladyb: I agree, generally black women have great skin that doesn’t wrinkle but genes also play a big part in this. If you are a black woman who eats bad food high in fat and sugar then you will age yourself by being overweight and having dull skin.
I alway said, if African American women kept themselves slim, worked out and ate healthy food, they would all be knock outs!

  • woman

@d: agree genes and also one’s bone structure have alot to do with how one ages from what I’ve seen. Black women and Latina women often have that exotic bone structure and high cheekbones. Every woman I know who had a slimmer type face and high cheekbones always ages better than women with rounder faces who can tend to get the appearance of jowls easily/early on. (sorry to offend and generalize, I know its not true in all cases but something that I think should be taken into consideration more) than just skin color and lifestyle…Christy Turlington is a prime example.

  • @

    @Glow: doesn’t matter, you’re still ugly.

  • Tita

Eva Mendes is a known substance abuser. Didn’t she have stints in rehab? Not a good example for Latin “aging” since she has had an extreme lifestyle.

  • ^

Most latinas look older than their age. I don’t know if it’s rough life and early child rearing, or maybe genes, but I know this Salma is an exception!

  • patricia s.

I guess things could be worse….such as cancer or her child having an incurable disease. Geesh, these celebrities and their MINUTE problems……..If acne sends her into a deep depression…wonder what the above would do……

  • mel

@hmmm: Excuse me ubt you want to sound smart and you are not succeding. Salma IS white. She’s caucasian, “white” AND latino/hispanic.
Latino and Hispanic are cultural terms, NOT racial terms and it means the person is from a place where spanish is the main language and the cultural background is the same, that means music, sports, festivities, etc.
So Salma is wrong too because she’s implying that she’s not white when in fact she is but whatever.
I think she meant that very white (pale) skin is more sun damaging than a darker one because f the melanin that the skin has and so people that are very very pale tend to have more wrinkles and it’s easier to see them because they have to care a lot of care.

  • paul

I really don’t think it’s about skin color but eating healthy overll because take her friend Demi Moore, gorgeous woman that went crazy with her diet and now looks sick. When you don’t eat good fats (avocado, nuts, omega 3, etc) your body loses elasticity because fat is useful for the cells to carry the nutrients around the body or something like that (I’m sorry I forgot the definition) but fat is good for your body (good fats) it has nothing to do with skin color.,
Skin color as many of you has said, helps with sun damage but that’s all, if you don’t use sunblock every day, evn if you’re skin is darker you’ll get diseases.

  • Ethiopianchick

Uh ok WHATEVER salma, your still hot!!

  • Lycus

Salma has money, that’s why she is “aging” better. She smokes, which ages you quickly. Sorry to say, genes aren’t as important as you think. Science has shown that lifestyle plays a bigger role in aging. Wear your sunscreen and don’t smoke!

  • Mejay

    @A:
…”I alway said, if African American women kept themselves slim, worked out and ate healthy food, they would all be knock outs!”….

In general isn’t that true of any person of any race?? Healthy people are generally more physically attractive, no?
