Angelina Jolie: 'Maleficent' Gets a Release Date!

Angelina Jolie‘s upcoming film Maleficent will be released in the United States on March 14, 2014, Walt Disney Studios has announced.

The 36-year-old actress takes on the title role in the live-action film, which “explores the origins of the evil fairy Maleficent and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty.”

Elle Fanning could share the big screen with Angie – she’s reportedly in talks to play Aurora.

“It’s a really great script. I’m having a lot of fun,” Angelina previously said about the project. “I’ve already got my horns fitted. My kids are very happy….It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect.”

    @adel:

Unless you have read the script, or helped write it, you have no idea HOW the character is being portrayed, now do ya? So I would think that A Jolie has a better grasp on this character in this particular film than you do. Now, go run along and play with something sparkly.

  • Dc

I wish it was coming out earlier. She’s going to be magnificent.

Love you angie, brad and kids. Haven’t seen any pics of them lately – miss seen them all.

you obviously failed your remedial reading classes. if you hadn’t then you would understand when Angelina said “It’s a really great script. I’m having a lot of fun”. just for you; ANGELINA Read THE SCRIPT. therefore, she knows what is going to happen in the story. now, please go and find your mother because i doubt she knows that her little child is playing on the computer.

When you make a comment please try to be informed.. Julia and Charlize made movies about the same characters in Snow White

Maleficent is about Sleeping Beauty. If you had actually read the thread you would not have made an idiotic comment. but then you would not have been the idiot you are.

and Julia and Charlize don’t have a monopoly on Live Action Fairy Tales.
Angie can play any role she wants and will be doing this one.

This is so exciting! 2014 cannot come soon enough. I bet Angelina will be deliciously evil and sexy.

@The Real Deal: Thank you because I was thinking the same thing. I’m sure they will change certain things to polish up the movie and characters.

  • anon

2014? That is a long time between film releases. If she was another actress one could hope she would do an additional film and that it might get released sooner. But we know Angie and unless unforeseen circumstances dictate otherwise she won’t take on another role so soon after Maleficent. Oh well, it just means we’ll be seeing a lot of “on-site” pics instead I suppose.

  • Des

    2014 ???!!! Why not sooner?

  • The Real Deal

    @Des:

Most likely because of CGI effects, takes awhile to do those.

  • nani

We will have to wait for a while, but Angelina will be the best Maleficent…. No doubt about thhis!

Love that Angelina keeps doing a variety of roles and this should be a nice payday as the star of a major movie.

New Regency In Talks To Co-Finance, Distribute ‘Twelve Years A Slave’
    By MIKE FLEMING | Monday April 9, 2012 @ 7:57pm EDT

EXCLUSIVE: New Regency is in talks to co-finance and distribute (through its output deal with 20th Century Fox) the Steve McQueen-directed Twelve Years A Slave, an adaptation of the Solomon Northup memoir originally published in 1853. Chiwetel Ejiofor will play Northup, and Michael Fassbender will reunite with Shame director McQueen. Fassbender will play a plantation owner. Brad Pitt will play a Northern lawyer who helps free Northup and he and his Plan B banner will produce the film.

Northup was born free but after signing on with two men claiming to be circus promoters who wanted him for his violin skills, Northup was drugged and awoke in a slave pen in DC. He was forced to claim he had been born a slave in Georgia and was transported to Louisiana where he suffered the indignity of slavey and was often beaten brutally. After confiding in a white carpenter from Canada who came to the property to do a job, and who believed Northup’s story, Northup was able to get word to his wife back in New York, who was finally able to start the legal process that allowed Northup to regain the freedom that had been stolen from him.

The cast has been circling the $20 million movie since McQueen decided to direct it when his film Shame began garnering critical acclaim late last year. It was then a matter of CAA finding a way to fund it. River Road’s Bill Pohlad came on to provide a substantial piece of the financing and Summit sold international territories. Now, if the deal with New Regency closes–I hear it’s close to done–the pic becomes a reality with Regency joining Plan B and Pohlad as producers. Shooting starts late June in Louisiana.

It broadens Regency’s relationship with Plan B; New Regency recently came aboard to finance True Story, the Rupert Goold-directed adaptation of a memoir by Michael Finkel, a disgraced New York Times journalist who discovered that an accused murderer had stolen his identity. Once caught, the fugitive would only talk to the journalist. Jonah Hill is playing Finkel and James Franco is set to play Christian Longo, who was captured in Mexico after rising near the top of the FBI Ten Most Wanted List for allegedly killing his family. Production will begin in July and Fox will distribute. Dave Kajganich wrote the script.

Regency and Plan B are also teamed on The Gray Man, a star vehicle for Pitt based on the Mark Greaney novel that was scripted by Adam Cozad, with Plan B and Shine Pictures producing.

The Hunger Games held the top spot during a week in which the sequel’s director was put in doubt. Rumors are circulating that Gary Ross — who has already helped assemble the sequel, Catching Fire — may bail over money. It’s unlikely, however, that Ross won’t get it ironed out, and I don’t see Lionsgate — off the biggest film in the studio’s history — failing to compromise to keep him aboard. In either respect, we do know that Fox buckled and allowed Lionsgate have Jennifer Lawrence in the fall to film the sequel, choosing to push back filming of X-Men: First Class until the January 2013. Fox had first dibs on Lawrence, but the deal will probably work in its favor: A First Class sequel could only do better with another huge blockbuster under Jennifer Lawrence’s belt.
Indeed, The Hunger Games passed the $300 million mark this week, and it is now the highest grossing action film with a female action lead. It’s not even close, in fact. There’s a $100 million difference between it and number two, and with the way The Hunger Games is going, $400 million is not out of reach. In fact, perusing the list of the top 20, it looks like the highest grossing female action star of all time is likely Angelina Jolie. She has four films on this list with a combined gross of not that much more north of $400 million. Catching Fire should then easily make Jennifer Lawrence the highest grossing female action star in the history of film.
Not bad for a Kentucky woman from a humble background.
Here are The 20 Highest Grossing Female-Led Action Films

    20. Alien 3 ($55 million)
    19. Courage Under Fire ($59 million)
    18. Resident Evil: Afterlife ($60 million)
    17. Underworld Evolution ($62 million)
    16. Underworld Awakening ($62 million)
    15. The Fifth Element ($63 million)
    14. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life ($65 million)
    13. Kill Bill Vol II ($66 million)
    12. Kill Bill Vol. I ($70 million)
    11. Alien ($80 million)
    10. Aliens ($85 million)
    9. Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle ($100 million)
    8. Miss Congeniality ($106 million)
    7. Salt ($118 million)
    6. Charlie’s Angels ($125 million)
    5. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ($128 million)
    4. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider ($131 million)
    3. Mr. and Mrs. Smith ($186 million)
    2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day ($204 million)
    1. Hunger Games ($302 million (and counting))
American Reunion took second place this weekend with $21.5 million, behind even the $33 million of the last entry in the series, 2003’s American Wedding, suggesting — along with Scream — that audiences are not terribly interested in 90’s nostalgia yet. The same could also be said for the release of the 1997 film, Titanic, the second highest grossing film of all time. The 3D re-release only mustered $17 million. Meanwhile, Wrath of the Titans had a 55 percent drop, putting up another $15 million in its second weekend. Wrath will top out below $100 million before it’s all said and done, but like its predecessor, the majority of its box-office grosses will come overseas, where it’s already put up $76 million. Finally, Mirror Mirror fell a modest 39 percent, adding $11 million to bring its total to $36 million, a long ways from its $85 million production budget.

Funding Boost For “12 Years A Slave” + Details On Characters To Be Played By Fassbender & Pitt
    News by Tambay | abril 9, 2012 8:25 PM | 0 Comments
Finally some news on this project…
New Regency is said to be “in talks” to co-finance and distribute 12 Years A Slave, the adaptation of Solomon Northup’s slave narrative, to be directed by Steve McQueen, with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the starring role, and Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt in supporting roles.

In my “book-to-film” writeup on the project (HERE), I wondered what characters Fassbender and Pitt would play in the film; thanks to Deadline, we now know.

Fassbender will play a plantation owner (there were a few in the novel I read, so it could be any of them; but as reader Accidental Visitor astutely noted in his comment in response to me writeup, Fassbender will likely play Edwin Epps – your garden variety uneducated, ignorant, alcoholic redneck asshole to put it plainly, and the plantation owner Northup spends 10 of his 12 years in bondage working for.

As I noted in my writeup, Epps is middle-aged and, from what I gathered in Northup’s description of him, large – more fat than muscle – and just a mean bastard; an ignorant one who drinks a lot. A lethal combo I’d say – ignorant, mean and an alcoholic. And in a position of power too I should also add.

As you know, Fassbender does not fit that physical description, but continuing on with what Accidental Visitor said…

Just as the case with Leonardo playing a character in “Django” that, by script decision, was the total opposite of him, Fassbender will probably be doing the same in this adaptation. That’s how it works. When it comes to casting it is typical, when white folks are involved, for the thespians to be “prettier” than how they are described on the page. That’s how you get funding for such films: promote the white prettiness. This is why when a major white character is an evil Nazi or a vicious slave owner, films pick good-looking types that allow the audiences to tolerate them (and for some perhaps sympathize with them).

And besides, I doubt Fassbender’s role would be a small one; although Brad Pitt’s is. As Deadline notes, Pitt will play a Northern lawyer who helps free Northup; if I recall correctly from the book, this lawyer features primarily towards the end of the book, and not very much.

But Pitt is also acting as producer of the project via his Plan B company.

The film’s budget is listed at around $20 million.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in June in Louisiana.

I expect this will be a 2013 release, unless it’s rushed for a late 2012 limited opening to make it eligible for Oscar consideration next year.

If you missed it, read my book-to-film report on the project HERE.

I believe you meant to post this on the next thread, about the”pot-smoking prostitute pretending to be a fake wife” role. But I can understand why you are here on this thread by mistake, Angelina Jolie is quite the awesome woman, you can’t resist her!

  • bp

I hope angie gets to do another movie after Maleficent filming for release in 2013, preferably, a project with Brad Pitt.

  • cam

Well, Angie and Brad did say that they were going to act in less films. He’s going to concentrate on producing and she found a new love for directing. I’m sure they will continue their success at both.

  • MJ

Wow! It’s amazing that this movie got a release schedule already even they did not start filming yet. Ahhh! The power of LA JOLIE. Producers and distributors are willing to invest right away in the name of LA JOLIE. At least Angie doesn’t need to beg distributors to finance her movie unlike Ticky and the producers of her movies always beg distributors to finance her already made products. You can really see the difference between the REAL MOVIE STAR AND just a TV star who tried to become a movie star. Angie, the A LIST and Ticky, the D list. See, Ticky fans! BIG DIFFERENCE.

God it seems so far off but i can wait.
