Angelina Jolie shakes hands with Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague on Tuesday (May 29) at the Foreign Commonwealth Office in London, England.
The 36-year-old actress helped launch an initiative that aims to combat and prevent sexual violence overseas by drawing “on the skills of doctors, lawyers, police, psychologists, forensic experts and experts in the care and protection of victims and witnesses.”
The launch event featured a screening of Angelina‘s directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which centers around the Bosnian war.
“It is in the context of war and conflict that sexual violence is found to the most appalling degree, and on a scale most of us cannot imagine,” William said in a statement. “[It] is an issue which is central to conflict prevention and to peace building worldwide.”

Totally agree with you about the intent of the film. Jolie said this herself while she was promoting the film. The purpose was to get people to think, for the international community to do more than talk. I think she’s accomplished her mission. What she did with the film including filming in two languages was brilliant. How many directors, forget about first timers, would have the guts to do that; even, the guts to tackle such a controversial subject and do it with grace and dignity?

I can’t say enough about how I admire her. She does her Humanitarian work on a scale accomplished by no one else in Hollywood. While the uneducated and terminally brain dead have nothing more to do than talk about how slim she is or the sexual orientation of a 6 year old, she’s doing something worthwhile that will benefit, not just the people involved, but ultimately all of us. No doubt, it will inspire others to greater participation in world wide human issues.

Jolie is driven and smart, self-sacrificing and she works hard. For that reason, I don’t think many of the women in Hollywood are capable of doing what she does. It takes all of those things, not just money, to make a significant difference.

She has the same 24 hours as the rest of us each day, but she packs a lot into them. When she goes to this place or that, she goes as an informed woman. She educates herself. She’s not reading from scripted material or stating banalities. She knows what she’s talking about because she’s spent the wee hours learning about these different places, their history and their needs. She doesn’t just give lip service to an issue, but she is able to speak on it intelligently and in a manner respectful of the victims.

On top of her now expanded Humanitarian duties, she has a man and 6 children to take care of. While I do miss seeing her on the big screen, I realize that being a UN Ambassador is a JOB; one that she loves and is highly skilled at performing. None of the Ambassadors on the same level performs to her standard. All those complaining that she’s not with her children 24/7, what average working mom is? But, she also tend to the needs of her family. I’m sure there are times that she is bone tired, but her commitment and love for her family doesn’t come with an unless in front of it. They are her first priority.

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has warned sex crimes in war zones must be addressed at the launch of a Government initiative aimed at tackling the issue.
The actress has pledged her support of the move while attending an advance screening of her latest film, The Land of Blood And Honey, at the Foreign Office in London.
The film is a love story set against the backdrop of the Bosnia war.
Ms Jolie, who is special envoy of the UN High Commission for Refugees , said: “When we made this film our dream was that it would spur discussion and be a part of a dialogue that would help in some way to have others who are facing similar situations be able to address what they are going through.
“Throughout history, rape and sexual violence have been used as weapons of war.
“In modern warfare, as women and girls have become primary targets, the problem has grown tremendously.”
She said although progress had been made to tackle the problem, more action was needed.
“As conflicts rage around the world, sexual violence continues to take a terrible toll,” she continued.
“No longer can we pretend not to know the grave consequences of our failure to prevent and combat these crimes.”
For generations rape has been used as a weapon of war but often goes unreported and unpunished.
Sexual atrocities have been carried out all over the world but it has been particularly widespread in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Darfur region of Sudan and Rwanda.
Foreign Secretary William Hague , who joined Ms Jolie at the screening, described the film as a “rallying call that none of us can ignore”.
“When we think of armed conflict we think of battlefields or soldiers in arms, or tanks – but wars tragically are also about civilians, particularly women and children caught on the margin of the battlefield, yet at the centre of warfare.
“Rape and other forms of sexual violence have been used as weapons against women in conflicts the world over.”
He said he was “shocked” to learn that only 30 people have been convicted so far for the up to 50,000 rapes of women, men and children during the war in Bosnia in the 1990s.
“There are chilling reports of rape in Syria today, along with the murder, torture and repression of thousands of innocent civilians,” he said.
The Cabinet minister said he was “appalled by the scale of sexual violence against women, men and children in situations of conflict and repression, ranging from opportunist acts of brutality to deliberate torture and systematic campaigns of ethnic cleaning”.
“We will not succeed in building sustainable peace in conflict areas unless we give the issue of sexual violence the centrality that it deserves, alongside the economic and political empowerment of women and their vital role in peace-building,” he added.
The new UK-led taskforce will assemble a pool of experts in policing, medicine, psychology and international law.
Members will then be dispatched to conflict zones where it is believed sexual crimes have taken place.
They will also support UN teams and local charities where appropriate.
The aim is to set up the UK initiative by the end of the year.

The government has launched an initiative aimed at tackling sexual violence in war zones across the world.
It is hoped the scheme, which is backed by actress Angelina Jolie, will mean more perpetrators of sexual violence can be pursued in international courts.
UK experts will be trained to deploy at short notice to gather evidence in conflict-hit areas, under the scheme.
Rape is often used as a tactic of war against men, women and children in conflicts across the globe.
The team of experts will be selected from professions including the police, psychologists, doctors, lawyers, and forensic experts.
Apart from gathering evidence, they will mentor international organisations fighting sexual violence, and help to draft effective legislation.
‘Horrifying reports’
An audience of public figures and human rights campaigners gathered for the launch of the scheme, at the Foreign Office in London.
Actress Angelina Jolie, a special envoy for the United Nations’ High Commissioner on Refugees, spoke at the launch, before a screening of her new film, In the Land Of Blood and Honey – a love story set in the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

She said she was honoured to be part of the initiative: “Improved cooperation between countries and international leadership like we are seeing today is crucial to bringing justice and ending impunity.
“I am so very grateful, I am so happy to be a part of it,” she said.
“Throughout history, rape and sexual violence have been used as weapons of war. And in modern warfare, as women and girls have become primary targets, the problem has grown tremendously.
“The wars in Rwanda and Bosnia brought the issue to the world stage, and afterwards the international community took significant steps to end impunity for the worst atrocities and to combat sexual violence in conflict.
“But although progress has been made, there is so much that needs to be done.”
Foreign Secretary William Hague said Britain’s “influence and diplomatic network” would be used to push the issue of sexual violence in armed conflict up the global agenda.
Mr Hague said it was vital to combat sexual war crimes of the kind seen in the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, central Africa – and now in Syria.
“I was shocked when I learnt that only around 30 people have been convicted so far for the up to 50,000 rapes committed during the war in Bosnia in the 1990s. And there are chilling reports of rape in Syria today, along with the murder, torture and repression of thousands of innocent civilians,” he said.
BBC world affairs correspondent Mike Wooldridge said that while sexual violence was frequently used as a weapon of war, conviction rates were still too low.
Countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo will be the project’s biggest concern, he said.
Around 200,000 women of all ages were raped during the war in Congo, which ended in 2003.
In 2010 alone, 8,000 women and girls were raped due to continuing violence in the country.
The British government said it would use the UK presidency of the G8 in 2013 to promote a global approach to tackling sexual violence in war-torn countries and bringing perpetrators to the courts.
Angelina Jolie doesn’t normally have to fight for the spotlight, but her bizarre behavior at the Oscars that involved her flaunting her emaciated figure in a high-slitted gown is a cry for attention, an expert tells RadarOnline.com.
“People often flaunt their bodies in need of attention,” psychotherapist Jessica Aronson, who has not treated the star, told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview. “Her dress, like many others such as Jennifer Lopez’s, was so exposing and in my clinical opinion a deeper desire for attention.”
If the The Tourist star, 36, was trying to say, “Look at me!” with her leg constantly flashing out of her Atelier Versace gown, then she certainly got her wish, but probably not with the reaction she was looking for.
“Angelina Jolie looked like a fool the way she posed,” Fashion Police host Joan Rivers exclusively told Radar.
“She took herself right out of that super star category because you now realize she stands in front of a mirror to figure out [what she looks like.]”
Aronson went on to explain why Jolie may feel over-shadowed. “I imagine with all her children, career and volunteer work she may be falling last on her list of priorities which often results in weight loss and body changes,” she told RadarOnline.com.
“In addition, I wonder if she feels she has to keep up with Brad Pitt, who was up for an Oscar. There might be a level of competition which can often fuel changes in one’s body as a way to deal with unresolved feelings.”
Jolie’s uncomfortable pose accentuated her shocking weight loss as her twig-like limbs were on full display for all to see, and nutritional expert Majid Ali (who has not treated the star) estimates the former 5’8” Oscar winner’s weight to be as low as 100 pounds.
If she wants to expand her family of six with a third pregnancy, Angie will have to gain at least 30 pounds to reach a healthy weight. “Being so skinny could result in no period and no period certainly would result in no pregnancy,” said Ali, who thinks her blatant flaunting of her thin figure could be “defiance or body dysmorphia,” he told RadarOnline.com.

Poor things the delusion that comes from blind faith it two flawed human beings.
The dismal performance (critically and financially) of ITLOBAH has evidently left St. Angie questioning her career choices and reevaluating her life. She’s still peddling the movie in hopes that it might recoup some of its $13m budget. If it works out, she get back in good graces with the studios that may already be thinking that her status as a box office draw has quickly faded. At the same time, she also hopes to regain some of much-needed self confidence.
Not only was it poorly received by critics, but where were her fans? Not in theaters for sure, as it’s only grossed a miserable $300K at the US box office.

The first problem is probably that it’s an Acer. LOL! Sorry…just had to say that. They suck. The volume on most laptops isn’t that great anyway. They just don’t have the space for a really good sound card. My suggestion is to just buy a pair of USB external speakers. You can buy them at Walmart or Office Depot for less than $20. Other than that – what OS are you using? Win 7/Vista or XP? With XP you have more options available.

- If it’s XP – double-click the speaker next to the clock to open the full set of volume controls and you should see 4 or 5 different items – Line In, Line OUt, etc. Make sure none of them are on mute. Some laptops also have sound control on the dashboard above the keyboard. You’ll need to check to make sure the sound is turned up there as well.

- For Win 7 or Vista – go to the Control Pan and open the Sound controls. On the Playback tab you should see your speakers listed. Click on Speakers and then go to the bottom and click on Properties, go to the ADVANCED tab. Under Default Format you should see a setting for the sound quality. The default is “16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)”. There are 3 higher levels that you can select and then click the TEST button to see it makes a difference. If you increase the quality you may notice some slowing of other apps when you’re playing a video or a music.

The couple and their six children are currently residing in the UK while the actress works on ‘Maleficent’ and are said to have purchased tickets – which cost £3 each – for a bash near their home in Richmond, south west London, on Saturday (02.06.12) to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne.
A source close to the planning committee of the Ham & Petersham Jubilee Tea Party said: ‘Brad and Angelina are aware of the celebrations. They have had information sent to them and shown an interest.’

Angie gives her own money but she also does a lot of unseen groundwork, visits areas of conflicts, the refugees in their camps to find out what they need (their immediate needs), she speaks to the govts especially in conflict areas to ensure refugees get a safe passage, needs such as camps, water and sanitary places are provided. That their needs are met and respected and issues such as sexual abuse of women are looked into. Without these schools, hospitals, medicines, water taps/pumps, nets, etc millions of children, adults in third world countries will die or stay uneducated. Their will be no future for the kids. Children who have lost their parents through wars, earthquakes will not find safe homes, children and adults in an abuse relationships/homes or still living in conflict zones will not have a safe place to live.
Angie does a lot more than donating her own money, that’s why she is respected by Politicians, her humanitarian colleagues, and other A-list Super Stars in their business. She has been doing this for over a decade. Do these ignorant idiots even know the magnitude of what Angie does? how many charities she supports? ignorance is not an excuse, they can’t plead hate as ignorance either. As Minister for tackling Violence against women and girls overseas I am proud of this commitment by us as a government to tackle this most horrendous of crimes. It is hugely important in substance, because experts will now collect evidence in conflict zones to enable prosecutions to be successfully brought to end the dreadful impunity that has protected war criminals from facing the consequences of their actions.

The Government will also use the UK presidency of the G8 next year to promote practical ways of tackling sexual violence in war zones.
Sexual violence and rape as a weapon of war are of such a scale as to be virtually unbelievable. United Nations statistics show that worldwide one in five women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime.

Angelina Jolie’s film ‘In the land of blood and honey’ tells the story of the indiscriminate rape of Croats and Muslims during the Bosnia War in the most powerful way. The film was screened at the Foreign Office with an invited audience of those who work in this field – and Angelina herself was there to introduce and talk about her work.

Fairy tale Maleficent comes to Gerrards Park
BULSTRODE Park is set to become one of Disney’s latest film sets as production gets underway for Maleficent – a big-budget remake of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale.
Construction of an enormous set in the Gerrards Cross park has been ongoing for the past few weeks, with facilities readied to accommodate trailers, lighting rigs, and a 120 ft CGI blue screen.
The park will stage major fight scenes involving the use of some 60 knights on horses and 100 foot soldiers.
Film crew will also make use of the huge blue screen installation to allow actors to fight computer-generated fantasy characters.
Although transformation from park to film set has included various new dividing fences, production staff have assured walkers that public access to existing rights of way will remain unaffected.
They have also made promises to restore the area to its original state once shooting is complete.
Directed by two-time Oscar winner Robert Stromberg, the production intends to retell the classic Sleeping Beauty fairytale from the perspective of the princess’ evil nemesis.
Adding to an already star-studded cast of Angelina Jolie and Sharlto Copley, Maleficent is set to feature Miranda Richardson, Sam Riley, and Juno Temple.
Filming will take place in Bulstrode Park over the first two weeks of June, with production being completed throughout the summer at Pinewood Studios and various other sites around the Buckinghamshire area.
The film is currently scheduled to reach UK cinema screens in March 2014.

The reason the trolls are still here is precisely becuase they KNOW Jared won’t do much about them. They know the most he’s gong to do is delete their posts HOURS later. This is the last major OPEN blog forum for celeb gossip. Jared’s the only site I can think of that doesn’t have some type of moderation or filtering process. To support her causes and to be fascinated by her image is one thing. Fine. But the fact that so many people seem to uncritically swallow every PR move that she’s making is a bit disturbing. It’s like there’s no room for any type of rational skepticism. One can argue that they believe her intentions are good and her commitment is genuine – but you have to admit that she’s not knowledgeable in any of these issues that she’s been promoting. She’s educated in acting and film-making. Not in international law or peace-keeping or medicine or psychology or anything that’s relevant for this.
And besides, it sort of misses the point if all that happens is that the halo above Angie’s head gets brighter instead of people actually learning more about the issue at hand. I have to question the true value of this kind of celebrity-endorsement. It doesn’t inform the public of the complexities of the matter. The focus of people’s understanding and empathy is towards her – “look what a great person Angie is for doing this, and isn’t she pretty and compassionate” – instead of it being directed to the people who should be in focus, in this case victims of rape.
But what I guess it can do is that it can legitimize the work and create public opinion for it. But there’s no depth in these discussions, it’s more of a presentation for the masses. “Look, here’s your favorite celebrity promoting our cause” – and there’s no room for a philosophical discussion.
In short my point is that there is nothing enlightening in these type of PR events. My impression is that it does more benefit for the celebrity than it does for the cause.

But she influences people, that’s the power celebrities have, they can influence our opinions. And they create trends…like adoption for example.

Well…democracies exist outside of America as well. I bet most of the people posting here live in some kind of a democracy, although some might not. If you hate someone as much as they profess to hate Brad & Angie – why spend your entire life at fan sites for them? It makes no sense and deserves to be derided, insulted and flipped off. Occasionally I may be in the mood to attempt to speak rationally with them (okay, not really, but the sarcasm goes right over there heads anyway) but you can’t be rational with crazy people. They’ve got a handful of forums out there dedicated to hating on Brad and Angie (in particular) but they CHOOSE to come HERE and get in the faces of fans. Brad and Angie are 7 years into their relationship and these idiots show no sign of moving on even while declaring that Ticky has. If Jared won’t do anything to permanently get rid of these losers then I think it’s natural that the fans don’t always ingore them. It’s the old adage about the squeaky wheel always getting the grease. 85% of the time I think most of us ignore them…but sometimes you’ve just gotta give ‘em shite for it. These trolls are about as useful as a bucketful of dead batteries. Less so really because if it’s a good size battery you can at least use it as a door stop.

This project will help some of our veterans move into safe, affordable housing befitting their service,” said DCA Acting Commissioner Richard E. Clinton Hill Apartments, located in the South Ward, includes 56 permanent affordable apartments which will provide housing to a minimum of 14 disabled veterans. To further help subsidize the affordability of these units, HELP Development Corporation has been awarded fourteen Section 8 vouchers from the Newark Housing Authority and will work with the East Orange VA Medical Center to make these available to income eligible veterans.
The 4-story building features 14 one-bedroom, 20 two-bedroom, and 22 three-bedroom units with rents affordable to residents earning no more than 50 percent of the area’s median income. Sherlock’ star to play plantation owner

Benedict Cumberbatch, star of PBS skein “Sherlock,” is set to join the cast of New Regency’s “12 Years a Slave.”
Steve McQueen is directing the pic starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt.
Based on Solomon Northrup’s 1853 nonfiction tome, New Regency pic stars Ejiofor as the author, a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery. Cumberbatch will play a plantation owner who buys Ejiofor’s character and is won over by his engineering skills.
McQueen co-wrote the script with John Ridley (“Red Tails”). Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will produce for Plan B.
Production will start at the end of June, and CAA is arranging financing for the pic in addition to repping its U.S. rights.
Cumberbatch, repped by UTA and Conway Van Gelder, has broken out recently in film with strong roles in Paramount’s “Star Trek 2,” Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and the indie “Phoenix.”
Geez and I though “12 Years a slave” already had a great cast. Cumberbatch aka Sherlock Holmes just put it over my must see list. With Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cumberbatch the rest of the cast and the script synopsis, I am super super excited to see this film. Of course filmed in the Hollywood of the South, New Orleans is the icing on the cake. Who dat!!! who dat!!!
