There is so much expectations resting on this dramatic tale of the French people by a giant literary figure (Hugo) and musicalized by a composing team (Boublil and Schonberg) of the same nationality. The stage musical, from its original French origins and later reimagined as an English version, has been loved by so many for the last 30 years.

Now we have an outstanding cast, with dramatic acting credentials, some with excellent musical theatre background and others with natural musical gifts, who are doing their best to give us the movie musical version we all anticipate! They are led by an Oscar-winning director in creating new heights for this movie musical, including the use of live vocals and a mainly sung-through screenplay.

I am hoping for Oscar glory when the movie is judged at Oscar time!

I’m French. I have seen the original musical live on stage (the 25th anniversary version) and I love it. Hugh Jackman was born to be Jean Valjean in a movie adaptation of “Les Mis” and he will terrific in it.

The stage musical has maybe French origins but most people over here don’t even know it. When we heard “Les Misérables”, we think first “Hugo’s book” then movie adaptation with Gabbin or TV show with Depardieu and Malkovich. In France, very few know the musical and no-one calls it “Les Mis” ;)
I was ecstatic when I heard of the movie and the cast. Then I heard they will SING ! I thought WTF???!!!
However, I can´t wait for the movie. The story is great, the cast is great (I would have imagine Jackman as Javert and Crowe as Valjean, though) and it will allow me to discover this successful musical.
The strangest thing will be to listen to the lines and songs in English I guess. Lol

    Sorry for my poor English.

A film filled with dirty, malnourished (except Russell Crowe), and actors made up to look old/ugly/repulsive. Oscar fodder. Yawn.
