Rafael Nadal & Maria Sharapova Make History at French Open

Rafael Nadal poses with La Coupe des Mousquetaires trophy after winning the 2012 French Open on Monday (June 11) at Roland Garros in Paris, France.

The 26-year-old Spaniard beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 – passing Bjorn Borg for the most French Open titles.

On Saturday, Maria Sharapova also made history when she defeated Italy’s Sara Errani for her first French Open title, which completed a career Grand Slam.

She’s now the 10th woman to win Wimbledon, the Australian Open, the U.S. Open, and the French Open and will climb back to a No. 1 ranking!

“I’m celebrating this weekend’s victory at such a deep, personal level,” Maria tells JustJared.com. “I am moved by all of the support I have received from my fans and those who believe in me. This win is one of my most treasured moments in my career.”

FYI: Maria designed her own French Open look in collaboration with Nike.

Very happy that Masha finally won! She deserves it after 4 years of fighting back to the top. Well done to Rafa as well!

My two favorite players won. They’re very much alike. They are ambitious, hardworking and determined. Hot.

Maria has always been an overrated player. Look at the people she played in the draw, no competition what so ever! Congrats to her though

I was pulling for Djokovic but congrats to Rafa as well

So happy for Rafa, but I can’t stand Sharapova’s grunting and screaming in the court. She sounds like an idiot and if i was playing her i would want to smash her face in with my racket.

These are the two players I was rooting for! I was so touched by how happy both of them were after they won. They both worked so hard to win, and the conclusion was spectacular. VAMOS RAFA!!!! My favorite tennis player in the world, EVER!!!

What an incredible achievement for Maria. After the mess that was the shoulder injury and not even knowing if she’d get back to playing tennis at a professional level, here she is now. Completed a career slam, back to world nr 1.

She truly is one of the greats in the game.

I’m sorry, but sharapova did not make history. she just won a french open title. On the other hand, Nadal won 7 titles in 8 tries. Tha’s what I call history. congrats to nadal, you are fantastic.!!!!!

Maria’s screaming and grunting while playing matches has totally turned me off to the point I will not watch her play nor any other shrieking nitwit. I, along with many others, find it annoying and unnecessary and it really takes away from the enjoyment of watching a match. Maria Shriek-apova detracts from the lovely game of tennis.

Hooray for Mr. Nadal. He is a gentleman and an amazing athlete. Congrats Rafa!

Rafa and Maria!!! Yes!! So deserving!

Congrats to Rafa! Awesome player and a gentleman! Love Maria too.

So happy for Rafa! He fought back hard against Djokovic who really looked like he was going to win that 4th set and the match!
Am hopeful he is as successful at Wimbledon.
As for Maria and the women’s game in general, all the over the top grunting has ruined the game for me. I agree with #16 that it is distracting and off-putting. I can’t bear watching women’s tennis because of it!
