Angelina Jolie Donates $100,000 on World Refugee Day 2012

Angelina Jolie marked World Refugee Day 2012 (June 20) with a new donation of $100,000 for the U.N.’s work in helping Syrian refugees.

“Unfortunately, the world is producing displaced people faster than it is producing solutions to displacement. And the solutions are not exclusively humanitarian – they are also political,” the 37-year-old actress said in a statement.

“The international community should rededicate itself to preventing conflict, addressing it when it erupts, and solving it more quickly,” she added, “for that is the only way to create durable solutions for the refugees whose strength inspires us on this World Refugee Day.”

Message from UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie on World Refugee Day 2012

UNHCR believes even 1 person forced to flee is too many. And it’s true. Every individual refugee matters. Each has their own story. Each has suffered and survived more than I could ever bear. And yet, they rise up to live another day.

We risk forgetting the individual when we speak in numbers, but the numbers tell an important story. In the past year 4.3 million people have become displaced. There are still 2.7 million refugees from Afghanistan. 12 million people are stateless. And for the fifth consecutive year the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide exceeded 42 million.

Sadly, a person who becomes a refugee is likely to remain one for many years – often stuck in a camp or living precariously in the city of a developing nation. 70 per cent of refugees under UNHCR’s protection have been in this situation for more than five years. Their safety and well-being depend on the continued generosity of those countries who have kept their borders open to refugees, and on the vital efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance wherever and whenever it is necessary.

Unfortunately, the world is producing displaced people faster than it is producing solutions to displacement. And the solutions are not exclusively humanitarian – they are also political. The international community should rededicate itself to preventing conflict, addressing it when it erupts, and solving it more quickly, for that is the only way to create durable solutions for the refugees whose strength inspires us on this World Refugee Day.

ALTINOZU, Turkey – U.N. envoy Angelina Jolie traveled to Turkey’s border with Syria on Friday to meet some of the thousands of Syrian refugees who have fled their government’s bloody crackdown on dissent.

The Hollywood celebrity and goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees arrived in the Turkish province of Hatay on a private jet with boxes of toys for the refugee camps.

There are nearly 10,000 Syrian refugees in camps inside Turkey.

DHA television showed Jolie disembarking from the plane in sunglasses. The actress rested at Hatay airport and then headed to a camp in the Turkish town of Altinozu, Turkish media reported.

Turkish authorities hoisted a 45-foot-long banner near the entrance of a refugee camp to welcome Jolie. It read: “Goodness Angel of the World, Welcome” in English and Turkish.

Police kept fans away from the actress at Hatay’s airport and cameras were removed from rooftops and high points to prevent video of the visit.

One fan held a poster that read: “Angelina, kiss me for world peace.”

Authorities said Jolie’s own crew would provide images of her meetings with refugees.

In April, Jolie traveled to Tunisia during its refugee crisis as thousands fled from its war-torn neighbor, Libya.

Who does one contact to put up Angelina’s name for Nobel Peace Prize? I’m being very serious. She is a great humanitarian, wonderful mother, serious actress, and fantastic helpmate to her soulmate, Brad. If our DEAR LEADER can win the Nobel, then why can’t OUR Angie?

$100,000 is NOTHING to her. nothing. like us buying a bottle of water (aka Angie’s Thanksgiving dinner).

this is great! Angelina has always been one of the most generous celebrities giving money to a lot of causes. and we’ll never now how many people follow Angelina in donating. as for our trolls, as usual, nothing of importance.

Some people are so inhumane. They can’t take some pretty women seriously. Don’t look at her look at what she did!!!

Angelina's blood vial @ 06/20/2012 at 1:13 pm

Being a starving hungatarian herself, she knows how hungry those refugees get, so it was very honorable of her to donate so little money to so many people in need.

@Crabby Patty: Hyperbole.

Oh Angie, I’m supprised GOD HIMSELF hasn’t come from the heavens

Banish Jennifer Aniston to hell! she is not fit to touch the hem of your garment and has never made a (public) donation like you oh holy one.

Please bless Brad and give himeth his Balleths back so he can continue his works of spreading his seed to every ho in town

And lastly Angelina queen of the golden syringe please bannish the people of DLIST to hell as well for they do not understand you glorious power.

@Whamo: Why so extremist?

==============================================
Because I’m calling a Jihad on Jennifer Aniston. lalalalalalalalalalalalaalala

charity begins at home. She doesn’t seem to do anything for the USA, well other than complain refugees need more money. Oh yeah, Brad and the whole New Orleans thing. Umm, how many years ago was that????? She adopts from other countries, meanwhile the homeless or orphaned kids in the US need a home. She gives money to other countries. Meanwhile it’s the Americans who buy what she and Brad sell. Something wrong with that picture.

@CrabbyPatty:

Oh for God’s sake. The kids have a home. They have spend a great deal of time in LA at their HOME and in France at their HOME. The kids, if you bother to follow the family, do a combo of home schooled and selected specialty schools. They certainly seem very well adjusted. If you bother to look you’ll find most restaurants and shop keepers talk about how well mannered they are and not at all spoiled. I’ve known a lot of people who have home schooled their kids and these kids have turned out just fine. And I’ve known many people who have traveled extensively with their kids like the JP’s and these kids have turned out to be exceptional in their knowledge of the world, their communication and critical thinking skills and their maturity levels.
I’d say it is you that has the problem and you that needs help.

@Whamo: She doesn’t call the pap’s when she does stuff. Obviously, you have a computer. Look up what she does.

When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. so you said “what the hell” and took the giant leap into the world of idiots. tell me, you having fun there?
