    Angelina Jolie becomes ‘Sarajevo citizen’

Angelina Jolie has become an honorary citizen of Sarajevo at the city’s film festival, in recognition of her film about Bosnia’s 1992-1995 war.

Her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, tells the story of a Bosnian Muslim woman’s love for a Bosnian Serb man during the war.

“This means so much to me. My heart is in this city,” said a tearful Jolie when given her award.

She said her experience making the film had been life-changing.

“The time I spent and the people I met in Bosnia have changed me for ever,” she said.

“I can’t tell you how much it means to me to be named an honorary citizen of Sarajevo, a city so dear to my heart.”

The honour was announced in April.

Still from In The Land of Blood and Honey Zana Marjanovic and Goran Kostic star in In the Land of Blood and Honey

It was presented to her by the prime minister of the Sarajevo Canton, Fikret Music.

In the Land of Blood and Honey, which features stark scenes of rape, executions and other war crimes, was first screened in Sarajevo last December.

Some Bosnian Serbs called for the film to be banned, saying it portrayed them as villains, but others said they wanted the film to be shown.

It was nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year for best foreign language film.

Jolie was also attending the Sarajevo Film Festival to promote young talent in Bosnia.

The festival began during the Bosnian War and has gone on to become one of the largest in Europe.

    bdj Says:

The 37-year-old actress – who raises Maddox, 10, Pax, eight, Zahara, seven, Shiloh, six, and three-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne with fiancé Brad Pitt – had no idea how ”enriched” a family would make her life, although the bond she had with her own mother, the late Marcheline Bertrand, gave her an idea of the strong bond between parent and child.

She said: ”For me, being a mother has enriched my world so much more than I could ever have imagined.

”It’s hard to say that I needed to be able to care for children to become happy in my life, but I think there’s a lot of truth to that.

”My mother was very devoted to my brother and me. Having experienced that level of love makes you understand how much your children will appreciate you.”

Angelina also believes the key to being a good parent is to always put your children first.

She added to OK! magazine: ”I think being a good mother involves a decision to be selfless – often there’s no choice. You put your children first and then everything follows from that.”

Hmmm “children can be messy” but they are also loveable and bring great joy into your life. I guess when you have a skinny jean wearing bad screenwriter to raise and support, you have your hands full.

    PUBLISHED: 09:57 EST, 8 July 2012 | UPDATED: 09:58 EST, 8 July 2012

After dropping into the country that inspired her directorial debut for the Sarajevo Film Festival, Angelina made a grand exit.
The big name Hollywood star dressed up in theatrical fashion to board her flight out of Bosnia, earlier today.
The 37-year-old actor looked like a real superstar as she prepared to board a small private jet with three of her children.
Frequent flyer: Angelina Jolie departed from Sarajevo, Bosnia, earlier today dressed glamorously in a black bat wing top
Angelina wore a black bat wing top that concealed her slim frame but added the wow factor to her appearance.
The mother-of-six teamed the trendy top with a pair of slim fit black trousers and wore peep-toe shoes.
Her lovely long brown hair was down and although her face was hidden behind a pair of sunglasses her trademark full lips were instantly recognisable when she smiled.
Stylish: Jolie looked fabulous in her all black outfit and was escorted by a large amount of people from the terminal to the jet

Blast off: Jolie was joined by three of her six children Shiloh, Pax and Zahara, who had all attended the film festival

The beautiful star took her children Shiloh, Pax and Zahara by the hand as she was escorted on to the tarmac by a large amount of people.
Jolie was made an honorary citizen of Sarajevo during her visit, an honour that was announced in April for her part in ‘keeping the truth about wartime events in Sarajevo and Bosnia-Herzegovina alive.’
The Hollywood star’s film In the Land of Blood and Honey was a love story set against the background of the Bosnian War and dealt with a series of atrocities.
Fashion follower: The actor looked superb in the outfit and was as gracious as ever as she boarded the private jet

Goodbye: The star had been made an honorary citizen of Sarajevo during her visit, an honour that was announced in April

It premiered in 2011 and featured a cast of actors from the former Yugoslavia.
She was inspired to develop the film after visiting the country as a UNHCR ambassador.
The drama was a box office disappointment, earning just $303,000 worldwide, yet it received a variety of critical honours.
The drama picked up a Heart of Sarajevo award last year at the Film Festival.

Ready to launch: The Hollywood star’s film In the Land of Blood and Honey was a love story set against the background of the Bosnian War and dealt with a series of atrocities

It was also won a Producers Guild Award in Los Angeles and was nominated for a Golden Globe.
While the project initially sparked concern in Bosnia, once it was shown most victims’ organisations had a change of heart saying it was objective and sincere.
The Sarajevo Film Festival, born as an act of resistance when the Bosnian capital was under siege during the 1992-1995 war, has grown to be one of the largest in Europe.
