Brad Pitt's Brother Responds to Mom's Anti-Gay Letter

Brad Pitt‘s brother Doug has spoken out about their mother Jane‘s anti-gay and anti-Obama letter that she recently wrote as an opinion piece for a Missouri newspaper.

“You know, I think moms and dads and kids agree to disagree all over the world. So why would our family be any different?” Doug said during an appearance on Today (via THR). “There can be healthy discussion when people disagree with you. The bad thing is when it turns to venom and negativity, and we don’t have that in our family. It’s open discussion. We can learn from each other and, if anything, it solidifies your point. Or maybe you learn something.”

Doug appeared on the show to promote his new role as the spokesperson for Virgin Mobile Australia.

wow, Brad Pitt’s brother is so much more articulate than him!
A good, solid, clear answer there.

  • birdie

Doug sounds so nice and cute, I like his accent. He is a bit shy, but very charismatic.

  • Tara

He said it beautifully, all families have difference of opinion, i was surprised to read her letter though. And i certainly don’t agree with her views either, that’s life. He is handsome though, not as Brad but still.

  • G

Great points, all that are hard to accept when you feel very strongly about either gay rights or Christian values. Calling Christians bigots for having Christian views is childish and pointless. Many people in this country are Christian (majority in fact) and they shouldn’t be expected to “see the light” as you see fit.

  • SREN

Today the Media spoon feeds you what you should think and labels you a racist, a bigot if you disagree.
Media Backlash is why many are losing viewers but they scapegoat people like Ann Currry.

  • Mlllllle

    Medias are stupid.
Who cares about what their mom says, she is not a public personnality.
They don’t have to make excuses for her.
But well, it’s a way for you blogs to create a story, so the brothers have to rely, and you can sell your silly advertising.
We all know Brad Pitt disagree with those ideas, you just have to take a look at Legends Of The Fall and Thelma & Louise to know that he was acting as a gay icon.

Doug is as bright and well balanced as his more famous brother. Altho Brad is iconic for his looks, IMO what more defines him is that he is super smart…………his knowledge of art and architecture, his business savvy, his Producing skills, his ability to cull out quality in the biz, his choice of mate, his acting prowress, his humanitarian entrepreneurism like MIR, his photography talent, his ability to fly a plane etc.

Despite the fact the family is polarized as regards their political views, I think they are a stellar family with amazing individual components.

  • dawne

To the posters who are judging Jane Pitt based solely on her political/religious views are being somewhat ingenuous. We may not drink her Kool Aid, but she is a loving woman, a great mom and grandmother and wife……she’s simply evangelistic in her opinions on social issues. The fact that she doesn’t take it to the alienation point with her son and wife who wholly disagree says a lot about the woman.

Personally I find her views repugnant but she is a product of her time, place and exposure. And there are millions of her. But it is not solely defining as to whom she is as a wife, mother, grandmother and humanitarian. Just a case of live and let live.

  • dawne

    I meant ‘dis’ ingenuous. duh.

  • I Agree Too

Some fans on the Angelina Malificent site were practically turning against Brad’s mom just because her beliefs are different than her sons!? Which her son has said many times they have different views of life. It’s a shame that people can’t have an opposite opinion of others without being labeled as a racist, bigot, or homophobic. If you don’t agree with the worldviews then you are against them. The thing that most people forget about no matter how wrong, right or hurtful we live in the USA and we have freedom of speech! Also, the last time I checked we are all individuals and have a right to our own opinions whether others like it or not.

It’s a shame when Doug was to be on the show for something else and because of the vicious hate thrown towards his mother for her opinion and views, his interview has to be focused on a subject having nothing to do with him.

  • Lara

    Great interview by Doug!
    Thanks Jared.

  • Love The Shoes

She has the right to say and feel whatever she chooses. My main problem with her was what I felt was major disrespect for the American President. I thought and still do think very little of President George W Bush and just read that most historians are in agreemment that he will go down in history as one of the worst Presidents in U. S history, that said, I was taught never to disrespect the fact that he was still our leader and I think Mrs Pitt was quite un Cristian in dismissing Mr Obama by never ever refering to him as such. I have to admit that i just don’t have a good opinion of her like I did even if I would defend her right to say what she wants because that’s what our freedom allows and demands.

  • anustin

    thanks jared.luv ur azz dude.

  • Dc

Excellent response Doug. You are charming like your Brother.

We may not agree with Mrs. Pitt but remember she is entitled to her opinions/feelings. We can disagree with someone but still respect them.

  • what?

“practically turning against” ? What does this mean? Jane spoke out & has a right to do so, but not everyone has to agree with her to be considered a good fan! Political discourse becomes so worthless because their is a cadre of people that disallow any dissenting opinion and then attack the person they disagree with- Jane & her fellow anti marriage equality folks should see the Prop 8 play Brad was in or talk to kids of same s*x couples who are sad when their families are trashed by hate. I read all the threads and did not see ANYBODY (but trolls, of course) attack Jane as a person. Both Brad & Angie are even more spectacular and strong given the fact that they are now such tolerant and compassionate people in light of the backwards, INTOLERANT things they must have heard growing up.

  • Sabrina

Yeah, everyone is entitled to their own opinion…bla bla bla… free speech bla bla bla… Some people should simply use their brain before they delight us with their “free speech”.
If somebody said publicly that interracial marriage shouldn’t be allowed, nobody would defend this statement with “free speech”.
Does free speech also mean that everyone is allowed to harass and bully gay children and make them commit suicide?
And why do religious nutjobs always demand special treatment when it comes to their rights??

  • solecito

    Jane for President.

  • SORELLA

Well said Doug!! By the time we are in our 40s like the Pitt sons are, you often have your own believes that are seperate from your parents’ beliefs as you are different generation than theirs (each generation becomes more tolerant than the one before them it seems).

Sheesh, families agree to disagree all the time, it happens in all families, famous or not. But that’s why blood is thicker than water, in the end, we don’t choose our families, we are born to them and love them despite differences like these and maturity means not only loving them, but accepting them and allowing them their own views. So kudos to Doug and Brad for understanding that parental love doesn’t mean you agree on everything.

Doug Pitt seems like a cool guy!!

  • Never forget

Brad Pitt thinks drinking beer made him a neglectful dad.The ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’ star decided to massively cut down his alcohol intake after seeing his adopted daughter Zahara, two, choke on an ice cube.
He said: “It’s not easy to be a good father when you’ve had a few drinks.”
“About a year ago I’d had a couple of beers and my daughter Zahara had this piece of ice that had been dropped on the floor, and she was putting it in her mouth and began to choke on it, and that was it.”
Pitt added: “You have to be absolutely on top of every situation. The other s**t doesn’t work anymore. When they wake up in the middle of the night you have to be there. And you can’t deal with children when you have a hangover – that’s just a misery!”

Brad Pitt’s little brother Doug revels in viral ad spotlight
    By Randee Dawn

When you’ve lived much your life with a super-famous older brother, jealousy could be an easy emotion. But when your big bro is Brad Pitt — well, that level of superstardom is so hard to fathom, it just might explain how little brother Doug Pitt remains so even-tempered. The younger Pitt stepped into his own spotlight recently with an ad for Australian cell phones that went viral in the U.S., and joined TODAY’s Matt Lauer Monday to talk about ads, Brad and their mom — who recently made headlines of her own.

“It’s a little surreal,” he said of the attention the viral ad has brought him, “but it’s fun. This whole campaign was to be tongue-in-cheek and have fun and luckily, it’s hit its mark.”

The ad focuses on the “normality” of Doug Pitt’s life (he runs a family computer business), as compared to his famous older brother’s, though it wasn’t shot in his actual home. He said he had no idea the ad would go viral, and that he hadn’t even told many people he did it — but gave his brother a heads-up.

“I did call him and said, ‘Hey, what do you think?’ and he said, ‘Do it, sounds great!’” After the ad came out and Brad had a chance to check it out, he texted Doug: “Hey, just saw it — hilarious.” “I was pleased,” said Doug.

Funnily enough, Doug said he’s been stopped in the past for looking like another famous actor — Val Kilmer — but these days people mostly recognize that he’s related to Brad, and ask him questions about his brother, his brother’s wife and their celebrity. “Honestly, my eyes glaze over,” he said. “It’s been these kinds of questions for a long, long time.”

But the brothers aren’t the only one having the limelight glare on them: Last week, a letter their mother wrote to a Missouri paper, taking a conservative stance on both President Obama and gay marriage, made headlines.

As Doug noted, they all respect each others’ views. “Moms and dads and kids agree to disagree all over the world, so why would our family be any different?” he said. “There can be healthy discussion when people disagree with you, and I think there should be. The bad thing is when it turns into venom and negativity and we don’t have that in our family. It’s open discussion, we can learn from each other … maybe you learn something.”

    Blind Item #1

This former B- list movie and television actress who is more known now for the trouble she gets into than her acting which is still good, has been on a drunken binge for the past month. Things have got so bad for the actress, who likes to take her clothes off all the time and has been fired from gigs, that she has missed entire days because of her blackouts. Friends of hers fear that her new guy is going to make things worse because he likes to do more than drink. When she is in blackout mode she will do anything. They are afraid what he could talk her into doing and that she would never recover.
