The 24-year-old Step Up: Revolution star is gearing up for the release of his first big-screen film! The next installment in the hit franchise follows Emily (Kathryn McCormick) as she arrives in Miami with aspirations to become a professional dancer. She sparks with Sean (Guzman), the leader of a dance crew whose neighborhood is threatened by Emily’s father’s development plans.

RYAN GUZMAN INTERVIEW – JUST JARED EXCLUSIVE

JJ: Tell us about the audition process for Step Up: Revolution.

RG: It was really long. It was about a month and a half long. It required 4 acting auditions and then 4-6 dance auditions. I think I auditioned the longest out of everyone else cast. It was intense. There was one time when I was like, “Am I ever going to get this movie?” The dancing was a lot harder than the acting for me. The acting felt natural, but the dancing was definitely a challenge and I somehow got it. I don’t know what they saw, but they liked it and it was really fun.

JJ: Did you shoot the whole thing in Miami?

RG: Yeah and that was hot! I think we were shooting the Ocean Drive scene and I remember someone saying it was 109 out and we were dancing on top of cars, so it was like radiating off the car and oh my God… I was thanking the wardrobe people because they gave me like nothing to wear (laughs). If I had been wearing something it would have been very hot and I would have probably passed out. We were all actually sweating on top of the cars. I fell off the car one time and I just realized that there were 300/400 people around me so they started taking pictures. I was like; please don’t make that on the internet.

JJ: What was it like living in Miami for that time?

RG: It was awesome. I come from a big Latin family, so it was kind of like going back home to be honest. Everybody was loving and inviting and open. To be honest, I was working most of the time. I only had 3 days off. It was definitely an eye opener to see what a lead does in a movie. It was cool because I didn’t mind it at all. I loved being on set and when I didn’t have to be on set I’d go watch Kathryn and Mia [Michaels] act and just try to soak up as much as I could. Outside of filming, like I said, the people were so open.

JJ: What was your favorite dance that you shot?

RG: It’s hard for me to say, because out of the flash mobs there’s one specific one I really like and it’s in the plaza where we’re all in suits. I think actually there’s a billboard with us in suits and it’s that scene. To me, one of the best dances that make the movie is the duet that me and Kat do. It’s a contemporary piece. I had never done contemporary before that, and thought what is this thing? After doing it, I didn’t realize how much emotion was involved in dancing. We did it for the cast and crew before we actually filmed and after we were done we looked up and we saw a good hundred people crying, balling, laughing you know, rushing us saying, “That was beautiful” and that was the point that I really realized, wow, dance can affect people that much. It was awesome!

JJ: Do you have a favorite actor?

RG: Christian Bale and Tom Hardy.

JJ: What kind of music do you listen to?

RG: I’m a hip hop guy, but a little known fact about me I love R&B. R&B is my stuff. I could be at home by myself just listening to good old Usher or Chris Brown. I just bought the new Usher CD and I love that CD right now.

JJ: Any TV shows that you like?

RG: I love comedies. Happy Endings is one of my favorite shows of all time right now along with 30 Rock and Community. There’s actually a show on MTV called Workaholics. It’s kind of crude, but it’s really funny. They do the stupidest things and it’s like little kids acting like idiots, but that’s kind of my humor.

JJ: Where were you born, raised and how did you get into acting?

RG: I was born in Texas, then moved when I was young to Sacramento and I’ve lived there most of my life. I was actually a professional fighter for a year and a half.

JJ: At what age?

RG: 22

JJ: And you’re how old now?

RG: 24, but I came out to L.A. to expand my horizon. I got picked up by a modeling agency, Wilhelmina, and through there I started to sign with a commercial agency and did 6 commercials in 6 months, kind of got the acting bug and started taking acting classes. I decided I wanted to make something of it. Three months later I booked the lead of Step Up. If you would have told me in 9 months I would have had 6 commercials and one lead in a movie I would have said, “No way!” But somehow it happened. Thank you God.

JJ: It happened really quickly for you!

RG: Yeah, I mean I can’t take credit for any of it, I worked my butt off, but at the same time there was some good people around me who motivated me and kept me going.

JJ: Where do you see yourself in five years?

RG: I see myself starring in other movies. I’m artistic so I like to write, I’d like to direct and be behind the camera sometime, so right now I’m writing some scripts and hopefully in a couple years they’ll get made.

JJ: Why will people be interested in watching Step Up 4?

RG: People will definitely be interested in watching this one because even though it is the same love story and you kind of realize that it’s a rich girl going after a poor guy that does hip hop, it’s going to totally surprise people. What we bring to it, we put our own twist on it. It’s not just the typical Step Up movie. It’s got contemporary, salsa and every kind of hip hop you know.
