'Dark Knight Rises' Breaks 2D Opening Weekend Record!

The Dark Knight Rises brought the crowds to the theaters and broke records on a weekend marked by tragedy.

The final installment of the Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway brought in $160.9 million, the largest opening weekend for a 2D film ever. Experts say that the Aurora shootings at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises could have caused a $10-20 million drop in grosses, though its impossible to peg the exact amount, according to THR.

The major movie studios did not report their weekend movie grosses until this afternoon out of respect for the victims of the tragedy.

Ice Age: Continental Drift fell to second place in its sophomore weekend with $20.4 million.

Rounding out the top five were Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone‘s The Amazing Spider-Man with $10.9 million, Mark Wahlberg‘s Ted with $10 million, and Brave with $6 million.

WHAT DID YOU SEE at the movies this weekend?

i really don’t get what waiting a day to post the millions these films made does in terms of “respect” towards the people who lost their lives or the families of the victims.

Congrats TDKR,altho it comes on the heels of such a sad and tragic incident:( I’m still proud of Chris Nolan n the cast n crew for bringing us the third n final movie of such a phenomenal trilogy… I’m personally happy n relieved that my fave actor,Christian Bale, has finally hung up his iconic cape n cowl,and will now be going back to doing other movie projects,including working on his latest film,”Knight Of Cups”. I’m sure he is also relieved that he will be doing smaller budget films and Indie films,which are more his preference,and mine as well:) I’d love to see him do some Directing in the near future,that would be so awesome:)

What a sad n horrendous ordeal everyone has been thru,somehow I feel emotionally connected to the victims n their families,like they could have been my family,my friends…it makes the box office numbers almost obsolete now,I mean,who really cares anymore what movie beat what movie? I sure don’t…this tragedy has made me look at things in a whole new perspective now,and just be thankful for each n every moment I have on this earth…i think we all should.

There’s no point in discussing BO numbers with TDKR. The film is surrounded by bad press, and it won’t reach it’s full potential because of it. Marketing for this film ended Friday morning, there will no promotion overseas, all interviews and red carpet screens have all been canceled. no TV spots. Basically, this film won’t receive the same treatment other superhero movies have gotten this year.

@Tony:

and for that reason it will raise much more … MORBO!!!!

Who cares about that money when 15 people die??? Seriously … no respect.

and I think to add to that respect, they should use some the profits to pay for everyone’s medical expenses. it’s the least they could do.

You’d think they’d show a little more respect….. I don’t think waiting two days to reveal the numbers does something! Unfortunately, the whole tragedy thing put a big ass STAIN on the promotion. Imagine what the actors must feel like. They believed it was to be the biggest film of the year, so much effort for nothing because of some lunatic… The movie seems great tho, ugh the thing is it will forever be “the Dark Knight Rises shooting”

What happened in Colorado is tragic but it could have happened anywhere. This guy is a sick, twisted, inhuman individual and I hope he burns in hell frankly. The Dark Knight Rises was in my opinion one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Nobody can make a movie like Chris Nolan can. It’s a shame that people are letting one psycho from going to see a great movie but then again it’s understandable.
