Avril Lavigne: Canadian Blowpop Babe!

Avril Lavigne sucks on a green blowpop and holds on to a miniature Canadian flag while arriving at LAX Airport on Sunday (July 22) in Los Angeles.

The 27-year-old singer’s foundation will be supported by the Codestrong 2012 Conference’s Hack to Help weekend, during which $500,000 worth of mobile apps will be donated to 12 charities.

“I am very excited that my fans will have the opportunity to give back from the convenience of their mobile phones!” Avril said in a statement. “I think an app will be a great way for them to help make a difference and to follow all the great things we do for sick or disabled children and youth. I am very grateful to all of the developers who are participating in Appcelerator’s Hack to Help and I can’t wait to see the final results!”

Aaaw, did the dentist give the wittle girl a lolly and a flag on her last visit?

There are starving children in the world and she is proud of mobile apps being donated? What a sad commentary of our times.

Avril is not a canadian, she is an american. she has been living in america since she was 17. so shame that she always tell how proud she is to be a canadian while the fact that she even doesn’t know her country appropriately. canadians don’t need you Av!!

@notsocanadian: How about Avril comes home and you take her place? Where do Celine,Drake,Justin,etc etc etc live? Ever wonder why? If you don’t like Avril,fine,but give the stupidity a rest.

@marcus:

Beiber actually has given back to his community of stratford ont. by donating funds to help a local women’s shelter that his mother used to stay and what has avril done for the citizens of napanee?

There are plenty of artists who do live in canada (nelly furtado, arcade fire, leonard cohan etc.) who are socially and politically aware of what is going on their communities, holding a flag that someone picked up at a souvenir shop doesn’t cut it.

“Her” (iron fist) clothing line features no canadian imagery union jack’s and american flags, and when you’ve lived the hollywood lifestyle of the trendy nightclubs and hollywood socialites it’s hard to say she stands for anything that relates to a canadian ideal.

@jenn: Fair enough,Avril hasn’t built a library in Napanee yet.At last count,she had partnered or worked with 13 international charities and established her own foundation.She spends days in hospitals and disability centers with kids and doesn’t just mail her name in.
Maybe I’m missing something,but what Ideal is Drake exhibiting when he tears up a nightclub,or Justin goes careening through the streets of LA,or Celine with the never-ending Ultra Diva routine? Avril always speaks well of Canada,and while her first years we’re a little hard to take at times,she’s much changed of late.and may be living some of those Canadian ideals more than you suspect.
Personal strength,responsibility,and work ethic should head the list.

@marcus:

Once again her charity work doesn’t involve the community she grew up in NAPANEE, not the typical pop tart/management hookup with charitable organizations so a fan can rhyme off a number and boast aboat it and free publicity, you missed my point beiber contributed on his OWN time/money not being hand held by management, EVERY pop tart is attached to charitable organizations, some are more sincere than others.

Drake has been involved with a number of charities in his hometown of toronto including the annual “spike for life” volleyball tournament which raises money for local boys and girls clubs he hasn’t forgotten his roots as he grew poor as well and he ALWAYS makes time, don’t tell me avril’s schedule is busier than drake’s.

Once again it’s the sincerity that matters, ANYONE can be attached to a charitable organization just as ANYONE can call themselves a fashion designer, just because their names attached doesn’t mean their that involved.

Sometimes it’s not necessary to tell the whole world that you’re helping/giving back.

@notsocanadian:

Excuse Me, but Yes Avril is still a Canadian

I love her. She’s such a sweet person :’)

Yeah, right.. @ 07/26/2012 at 8:58 pm

@jenn:
She’s trying to reach a larger community than simply the few thousand in her hometown. She may not have actively done as much with her foundation for children in Canada has she has in the US but that doesn’t mean she’s not done anything at all. If you don’t remember, her last and remember this word, her last KNOWN contribution to kids in Canada in part of her foundation occurred in October. Last year, she partnered with the Canadian embassy as well as another designer in order to create a collaborative design to raise funds to send people from Japan to learn English in Canada as well.

Avril hasn’t quite been one to boast about her charitable contributions, never has been. But again, that doesn’t mean she isn’t doing more than you think.

Yeah, right.. @ 07/26/2012 at 9:03 pm

Avril didn’t start her foundation as a means of more attention; it was because she wanted to show her support specifically for the children and young people that have to live with horrible illnesses and disabilities. She is still building her charity off the ground; how about you give her a chance to grow and continue to learn as she works with it before slamming her for not focusing on every country under the sun.

@Yeah, right..:

This is a very well rounded, and unbiased comment. It’s clear that some of the people commenting don’t like Avril and what she stands for. That’s fine. Her fans and supporters know what she is doing to give back to the world, not just a single community. Avril’s fan’s don’t care what Justin B. does with his money. They are not even comparable. Avril started small in the industry and worked her way up. She didn’t have major rap stars to back her. She had a vision, and she followed what she wanted to do. She’s accomplished a lot of things for someone her age, so even if you don’t like her music, you can’t claim that she did not work for her success.

And who cares if she spends more time in LA. Maybe she likes LA. I live in the south and I fn hate it. If I moved to LA and lived there for 10+ years I still get to call the south my home since I was born there, you dumb f*c*s. So stop being whiny b**chs and go listen to your JB, maybe if you get his name tatted on your forehead, he will give you a BJ.
