Ryan Lochte proudly shows off his American Flag Grill and his Gold Medal during the Medal Ceremony for the Men’s 400m Individual Medley on Day 1 of the 2012 Summer Olympics at the Aquatics Centre on Saturday (July 28) in London, England.
The 27-year-old swimmer is famous for wearing grills on his teeth at medal ceremonies, but we are loving his American pride at the Olympic Games!
“Yes, I am wearing one in London, and I wear them because they are different and fun. That’s my personality,” Ryan told USA Today.
While Ryan still showed off the grill at the games, he wasn’t allowed to wear it during the medal ceremony.
“Lochte told me he tried to wear his grill on the podium only to have an Olympics official tell him if he did so he wouldn’t get his gold,” an ESPN reporter tweeted.

His grill is disrespectful to the flag. The US Flag Code says “The flag should never be used as wearing apparel.” Basically, if you aren’t displaying the flag on a flagpole, you’re probably disrespecting it.

First of all, he’s also a model…signed with a major agency, so whoever said he doesn’t take care of his skin is a moron. 2nd, there’s flags all over everything in this world. Who cares what the flags says? Seriously? There’s a million other things this country “says” that are absurd and no one listens, but now you want to point out something just to be controversial. Anyone can be an Olympic champion or athlete. People with all different personalities, likes, dislikes and fashions. It doesn’t make him a “thug”, but thanks for the small-minded stereotype. We don’t all have to be the same to represent this country, I think our population shows that. And whoever said they don’t like sports because athletes get high or get off – I don’t even know what that means by they get off? What should we do, hang them?
