OlderAngelina Jolie Visits Syrian Refugees in Jordan
Angelina Jolie makes a special visit to meet with refugees on the Jordanian border minutes after they crossed over from Syria on Monday (September 10) in Amman, Jordan.
The 37-year-old actress, who is also a UNHCR Special Envoy, met with some of the over 200 refugees who fled the violence in Syria that evening.
“I am very concerned, the world is very concerned,” Angelina said (via Washington Post). “What is very heartbreaking is when Syrian people ask you why you think no one is able to find a solution for them.”
“What they described on the ground, hearing it from them is so horrific,” she added about the moving stories of children. “When you meet so many innocent people and civilians, the people of Syria are asking who is on their side. ‘Who is going to help us as the months go on?’”

I saw a story on the last thread that Angie was also supposed to go to Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq on this trip. If that’s true, then this sounds like at least a week-long trip for the UNHCR. Refugees are created in part because a leader was corrupt, selfish, greedy, controlling, narcissistic, sociopathic and very insecure. U.N. ambassador Angelina Jolie visits Syrian refguees in Jordan

(CNN) — With Syria’s refugee crisis reaching epic proportions, actress and U.N. ambassador Angelina Jolie visited displaced residents Tuesday at a camp in Jordan.
The trip draws attention to the plight of the hundreds of thousands of Syrians who have fled their country during 18 months of relentless bloodshed. More than 81,000 refugees have escaped to Jordan, and many more have fled to neighboring Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq.
“I am grateful to Jordan and the border countries for saving the lives (of those) who are dying in Syria. It’s an extraordinary thing,” Jolie said at the Zaatari Refugee Camp in Mafraq.
She relayed horror stories of what children said they witnessed, such as body parts that had been pulled apart “like chicken.”
“We encourage the international community to support the people here until one day they go back home,” Jolie said.
But the flood of refugees has tested the capacity of neighboring countries.
“Jordan has already reached its limit in absorbing the refugee influx, and what is needed now is to build more refugee camps for the Syrian refugees,” Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said. “We have limited means, but this is the land of the good people and we will share with them whatever we have, no matter how little is.”
The new normal in Syria’s civil war involves mass killings, torture and sexual violence, U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay said Monday.
“Thousands have been killed, thousands more injured. As we speak, civilians — including children — are continuing to be injured and killed in Syria virtually every hour of every day,” Pillay said.
More than 2.5 million people across Syria have been directly affected by violence since a popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011. The al-Assad family has ruled Syria for more than 40 years.
What started as peaceful protests last year led to a fierce government crackdown, an armed rebel uprising and a civil war with no end in sight.
The crisis is compounded by the government’s escalating use of helicopters and fighter jets in civilian areas, with indiscriminate attacks on urban areas where civilians were likely trapped, Pillay said.
But she said human rights violations have been committed by both the government and rebels and warned that both parties would ultimately face legal consequences for their actions.
“Both government forces and opposition forces deploy snipers who target civilians,” Pillay said. “As time has passed, opposition forces have also been increasingly implicated in kidnappings and abductions, including of foreigners perceived as being government supporters.”"Opposition forces should be under no illusion that they will be immune from prosecution,” she added, reiterating her call for the U.N. Security Council to refer human rights violations to the International Criminal Court.
Opposition activists reported a wave of fresh violence in areas well versed in attacks.In Hama province, regimes forces raided and looted homes amid heavy gunfire, the opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria said Tuesday.
In Homs, regime forces renewed heavy shelling by tanks and mortar, the group said.
And in Daraa, the birthplace of anti-Assad demonstrations last year, the LCC reported “heavy and indiscriminate gunfire by regime’s forces.”
State-run media, meanwhile, reported Tuesday that 30 civilians were killed in a “terrorist bombing” Monday in front of an Aleppo hospital. The government said children were among those killed.

Jolie tours refugee camp in Jordan

Actress Angelina Jolie, the UN refugee agency’s special envoy, has toured a refugee camp in Jordan for Syrians who fled the civil war in their country.
The Hollywood star arrived in the Zaatari camp, which hosts about 27,000 Syrians displaced by the 18-month conflict. She met Syrian refugee women separately and toured the sprawling tent city.
Jolie was accompanied by UN refugee chief Antonio Guterres and Jordanian foreign minister Nasser Judeh.
Mr Guterres said the “camp needs massive international funding” and its “conditions are still not acceptable”.
Jordan has sheltered more than 185,000 Syrian refugees – the largest number in the region.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) promoted Jolie in April from serving as its goodwill ambassador to special envoy due to her work for the agency.
Her eyes welling up with tears, Jolie said she heard “horrific” and “heartbreaking” accounts from Syrian refugees who fled the civil war in their country to find shelter in the camp.
She said: “I am very concerned, the world is very concerned. What is very heartbreaking is when Syrian people ask you why you think no one is able to find a solution for them. What they described on the ground, hearing it from them is so horrific.”
She added that the children’s stories were especially moving. The actress also said some of the refugees expressed fears “there will be no more of us” left in Syria as the relentless bloodshed grinds on.
“This mission that we are sharing has a key objective. It is to draw attention to the international community to express a much more stronger solidarity with Syrian refugees and the host countries that have kept their borders open to all those fleeing the conflict,” said Mr Guterres.

High Commissioner for Refugees Ant�nio Guterres and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie are in Jordan today where they are visiting the Za’atri refugee camp for Syrian refugees. As well as showing solidarity with the refugees the visit is about recognizing the commitment of the Jordanian people and government to refugee protection. Latest figures show that more than a quarter of a million Syrian refugees (253,106 people) have now been registered in the surrounding region, or are awaiting registration.
Last night Ms. Jolie, who arrived in Jordan ahead of High Commissioner Guterres, visited the border with Syria where she met newly arriving families. Among them was an injured man. Most of the refugees cross the border at night. Ms. Jolie was accompanied on the visit by members of the Jordanian military, who have been providing protection and assistance to the refugees
Since its opening on July 29 2012 Za’atri camp, which is located close to Mafraq near the Syria border, has received 28,000 refugees. These are among the 85,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan who have registered or are awaiting registration (the actual number of refugees in Jordan is thought to be much higher). Most are living with host communities in urban areas.
Refugees tell us that artillery and air attacks are continuing in villages and towns close to the Jordanian border. There are reports of thousands of displaced people in Syria’s south, moving from village to village seeking safety before they can cross the border.
The numbers of refugees crossing the border tends to fluctuate daily according to the security situation inside Syria. Overall, the average remains around two thousand new arrivals a day, but some days have seen less than 1000 people crossing.
Refugees say a number of sites in Damascus where displaced people have been sheltering are now affected by violence, forcing them to move again. Some refugees report being displaced five or six times before finally leaving the country.
UNHCR, together with the Jordanian Government, the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization, and UN and NGO partners is working day and night to support Syrian refugees. Nevertheless, conditions at Za’atri – a windswept camp in the desert – are still harsh, and most refugees are living in tents. With winter approaching, we hope to be able to move people into prefabricated housing, which is arriving at a rate of up to 30 homes a day, giving priority to the most vulnerable families.
In the meantime, refugees are doing their best to establish their lives in the camp. Over the weekend, the first wedding took place. Several babies have been born at Za’atri since the camp opened.
Following the visit to the camps, High Commissioner Guterres and Special Envoy Jolie will meet His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein, Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh. Hollywood star and Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Angelina Jolie, has donated 100 thousand US dollars to the cause of Syrian refugees. Angelina is known for being generous with her time as she visits struggling countries all over the world for her role at the UNHCR but this one-off donation was big-hearted even for her.
She visited Syrian refugee camps in Turkey last week, bringing toys with her to give out to children and talking to families about what they had been through.
The star also spoke at a press conference for the UNHCR to discuss why helping refugees was so important. According to the actress, who has interviewed refugees across the world, in order to flee their home, refugees must be at a point of such agony that all other alternatives are impossible.
Some 4.3 million people were forced to flee their homes last year alone to escape injustice imposed by their governments. According to Angelina, there are an additional 2.7 million Afghani and 12 million people who do not hold any form of citizenship.
The actress said that sadly, the number of refugees around the world is increasing yearly and they are in dire need of assistance not only on a humane level but also on a political one.

I have to laugh at those that say it’s just PR. Yeah, cause, ya know, going to dangerous, war torn countries is what people do for PR. No, they go to fashion shows during fashion week.
Yes, it’s 9/11 ALL over the world in countries where living with terrorism is a daily occurrence. 9/11 was a horrible, horrible day. Can you imagine living in a country that was what happened everyday? I can’t. Angelina has more than just an idea of what that must be like because she’s gone to these countries, she’s seen the fall out and she’s spoken with the people that do.
As was pointed out as a sad commentary, but, yes, you ask some people what 9/11 means and they have no clue. People don’t even know the name of the Vice President of the U.S., even when shown his picture.
She’s actively involved in a huge crisis, when the U.S. State Dept. calls her up and personally asks her to go somewhere because she does bring awareness because of WHO she is, that’s huge. She’s doing a whole lot right but, she cannot solve this on her own. It’s a worldwide crisis that world leaders need to make it a priority. She’s shining a light on the forgotten people. The difference is, Angelina hasn’t forgotten them.
