Angelina Jolie: Zaatari Refugee Camp Visit!

Angelina Jolie pays a visit to the Zaatari Refugee Camp on Tuesday (September 11) near the Jordanian border with Syria.

The 37-year-old actress and UNHCR special envoy was joined by UN High Commission for Refugees staff to visit some of the more than 250,000 refugees who have fled Syria. The United Nations is calling the humanitarian problems sparked by the conflict their “biggest crisis”.

“It’s been a very heavy experience, because oftentimes you come to these camps and … very rarely do you … meet them as they cross the border and you get to know people the moment they become a refugee,” Angelina said in a press conference. “The moment they’ve forever lost their home, their livelihood, their education, everything they have been is gone, and when I ask them, ‘What did you bring?’ they say ‘This’ (plucks at her shirt) ‘The shirt on my back.’”

The evening before, Angelina visited some refugees minutes after they made it across the border.

Watch The Today Show‘s special reporter Ann Curry reporting from the scene below!

    @The Real Deal:
    its the same person switching names back and forth its been on both Angelina threads since the AM when did she have time to commemorate ethe victims when she has spent all day obsessing over Jolie

  • Brad’s Hair Grease

    Ang, you will be happy to know that I called the paps to let them know to take the pictures. Ang, you may break up with me over this, but I am voting Mitt Romney this time. Ange, where is my bong?

  • cesar

    I´m really proud and happy for the good and long work that UNHCR and Angie have done in the last 12 years.

    Especially because it was a Portuguese, Sec. Antonio Guterres, who have invited Angie to start her work as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR when many people was critical with that kind of emblematic positions and wanted to closed the access of celebrities to the position.

    Sec. Antonio Guterres have trust in Angie since the first moment. He saw something in Angie that make him believed she could bring a new spirit and attention for the Refuge work all hover the world.

    He was right. Angie give a new life and a new dignity for the Refuge Work. Sec. Antonio Guterres last year have renewed this confidence in Angie promoting her to a Diplomatic position of Special Envoy of UNHCR.

    Today, after 12 years we see that Angie work and the bet of Sec. Guterres in Angie was one of the best decisions made in UNHCR since his foundations. No other celebrity have done so much like Angie in UN Refuge work.

    I´m proud to be Portugues, knowing that she was invited by one Portuguese to be part of UNHCR.

    Thanks Guterres and many thanks to Angie, the most beautiful and incredible women of our time.

    Both Angie and Brad are beautiful inside and out. What a great couple.

    @JP Fan:

    I know, these nutter’s dont give a rat’s wet a.s.s. about what day it is. Hell, it could be Arbor day and they would be soooo angwy about AJ being disrespectful to US trees. This is probably the same schizo that was bashing American troops about two years ago, when Jolie visited them in Iraq. This is jealousy pure and simple. Like I said before, takes a special kind of crazy to hate someone helping others. Wow…just wow.

  • megatit

    @tamsin
    Lmao at these simple loons. Most people can see through her orchestrated displays of hubris but not loons. Oh my isn’t she Wonder Woman? Making sure she raises six well adjusted, intelligent children while keeping her “man” satisfied by being the s lut and broodmare he tells her to be and then travelling to the ends of the earth to make Mother Theresa and Princess Di look like Imelda Marcos? Please …

  • Brad’s Hair Grease

    Someone here please help me escape from Ang’e veiny talons. She has a death clutch on me

  • catherine

    Angie is my hero. She is just amazing.

  • Frenchy

    This is uncanny. I usually watch BBC, not CNN any for international news and they are covering this issue HEAVILY.The Turks are having a tough time as well as the Syrian refugees and Jordanians. Tough situations all around. Last week I thought to myself, Angelina may have to go there.

    And Bingo…. Angelina is serious! She’s not playing. The refugee situations around the world is a real issue. Thanks to Angelina and the UNHCR they are continuing to speak for the refugees who have no voice.

    Waving to fans…..

  • God don´t exist

    @Twat trends on twitter:

    where is God when the refugees need help??

    You must thanks Angie for be there and putting the refuges in the news and given hope and real help to them.

    God is a lie. Pure and simple a rubbish.

    the world don´t need a invisible God, the world need more people like Angie to give real help and to bring real change.

  • megatit

    @Brad’s Hair Grease

    Lol, don’t you just love it when he calls her Ange? Aaange! That durrbrained tard.

  • awwww

    She is an inspiration. I think this is what Brad loves her most is her beautiful heart. Swoon.

  • tamsin

    @megatit:

    Mega, she does not mean to steal the spotlight you know? She only hopes to bring attention to these sad situations. If anyone happen to notice her blood diamond on her claw, Pitty’s balls that she carries in her purse it’s not her fault either. And if at the same time, she manages to convince everyone that she’s a living saint who didn’t mean to wreck anybody’s home, only used drugs by accident, doesn’t remember ever making out with her brother or her lesbian lover, and never meant to perform illegal adoptions on any country, then the better for her.

  • an oldie

    Good for her for bringing attention to the Syrian refuge cause. She blamed herself for not paying attention when the Bosnian war happened, but with this crisis, in 20 years, at least she can claim that she was aware and did her best to help. Just wish her haters would do something to help too.

  • tamsin

    @megatit:

    LMAO at the Imelda Marcos comparison… Do loons even know who they are though?

    I wonder if her vvhoreship at least packs some candies for those kids in those ultra exclusive LV bags that she carries. I can’t all be black moomoos and heroin, I mean, she has to look like she cares for her fugees. Since these poor kids will be back to their normal miserable lives after she leaves them, the best thing she can leave them with is some cavity or stomach ache, right?

  • megatit

    @tamsin

    Please Tam! Don’t be so rude. She left her $2000 LV purse at home. The refugee camp is not the place to flaunt wealth. Her UN assistant carries Brad’s balls for her okay?
    Lol, she blesses the poor refugees with her appearance and then she leaves. She’d be much more useful at the LA food shelter passing out stuffing on Thanksgiving no? Then she can hang out with her sisters in horing, the Kardashians.

    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/jolie-back-to-turkey-for-refugees.aspx?pageID=238&nID=29927&NewsCatID=341

    Hollywood star and U.N. special envoy Angelina Jolie is expected to visit refugee camps in the southern Turkish province of Hatay tomorrow, sources closely involved with the issue told the Hürriyet Daily News yesterday.

    It is not yet clear whether Jolie will stay in Turkey for more than one day, or whether she will accompany U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) Antonio Guterres who will pay a two-day visit to Turkey over the course of tomorrow and Sept. 14. Jolie’s last visit to Turkey was in June 2011 to Hatay’s Altınözü district.

    Jolie also visited the refugee camp in Jordan, which currently hosts about 30,000 Syrians displaced by the violence.

    “I am very concerned, the world is very concerned,” The Associated Press quoted Jolie as saying during her high-profile visit, which aimed to focus international attention on the plight of Syrian refugees and to attract more funding to help them. “What is very heartbreaking is when Syrian people ask you why you think no one is able to find a solution for them.”

    “What they described on the ground, hearing it from them is so horrific,” she said, adding that the children’s stories were especially moving. Guterres appealed to the international community to “help us and help the Jordanian government … in order to be able to massively invest in improving the living conditions of refugees in this camp … please help us.”

    In Geneva, meanwhile, UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said the number of refugees who have fled Syria for neighboring countries since the start of the conflict nearly 18 months ago had reached more than 250,000.

    “The latest figures show that more than a quarter of a million Syrian refugees (253,106 people) have now been registered in the surrounding region, or are awaiting registration,” Edwards said, according to Agence France-Presse.

    Where’s PT?….Georgie Porgie and Stacy have split! According to a gossip site (take with a grain) so you might get a chance with him now! lol:

    George Clooney And Stacy Keibler Split

    George Clooney and Stacy Keibler have called time on their relationship because the actor doesn’t want to settle down.

    The 51-year-old actor has been dating the 32-year-old former wrestler since August 2011, spending the summer together at his home in Lake Como, Italy where they were joined by his parents but the couple have called time on their relationship because George doesn’t want to Settle down.

    A source told The Sun newspaper: ”Stacy said George wants to be on his own again and has no intention of getting married.

    ”She hoped they would be together long-term. It was a big breakthrough to spend time with his parents. But over the last few weeks George has pulled away from her.”

    The pair are expected to announce an ”amicable” split in the coming days.

    The break-up doesn’t appear to worry Stacy who has jetted to New York for Fashion Week and on Tuesday (11.09.12) attended the catwalk show of designer Vera Wang.

    Stacy wrote on twitter: ”Wow, @VeraWangGang killed it on the runway! I was blown away and can’t wait to get into some of those pieces!!! Vera #youmademyday (sic).”

    Prayers to all of the refugees. I swear so many of just don’t realize how lucky we really are. Some days things seem so tough but it does not come close to what these people face.

  • soi

    Angie is so fierce. Love her.

  • Clean it up Jared

    I can tell you one thing for sure, I would not be aware of what is happening in Syria if it weren’t for Angelina. Normally I tune out news of the Middle East because it all seems to have been going on for so long without any progress or understanding. I can see that Angelina is very upset by what she has seen there and deserves credit for raising awareness at her personal cost. So unfortunate that Jared does nothing to remove all the sickening posts on her threads, she does not deserve it. Taking the money and run Jared, that’s your philosophy? Freedom of speech is one thing but what you have here is hate-mongering and it should not be allowed. Just Jared is extremely irresponsible and not deserving of all the hits it gets every day.

  • The Real Deal

    @soi:

    You’d think these hateful slores would be thanking whatever demon they worship that they dont have to face what some people in other parts of the world do. But they’d rather focus on some hatchet faced, mulitimillionare whose ego was bruised, and hate a woman that’s trying to make a difference. Sometimes ya just gotta shake your head.

  • lylian

    @busted:
    .
    >>>>>>>>>
    .
    Neither Europe nor America have the stomach for intervening in Syria. As you know, Europe is in financial chaos. Spain, Greece, Ireland, Portugal – we are 15- 20% unemployment rates, resurrection on the streets. In America, nothing is going to be done because of the Presidential elections and then the hard negotiations to avoid the fiscal cliff in January 2013 – whoever becomes President.
    .
    Any intervention will have to be diplomatic but for diplomacy to work, there has to be the will to use it by all parties. I don’t see this in Syria.
    .
    If it is to be military intervention, then quite frankly, whose gonna pay for the cost of military intervention? Yes, it’s mean to think on those terms when innocent civilians are getting killed but which citizen of which country really wants their country to:
    .
    (a) commit 100b – 200b to intervene when they are grappling with severe financial problems of their own; and
    .
    (b) Intervention may not resolve these long running political and religious disputes. Just look at Iraq, or even Libya. The situation in the middle east is really really complex – with divisions running on religious lines, tribal lines (yes, tribal) and political lines.
    .
    I, for one, don’t really have the stomach for it, especially as it’s my belief that the military intervention is NOT going to change the fundamental problems of Syria or the Middle East. Ultimately, the society itself has to get beyond sectarian, religious, tribal rivalries. Otherwise, it’s just throwing money into a black hole.
    .
    As Angelina said, “let’s just pray that the politicians find an answer.” But it’s the syrian politicians and the middle eastern politicians who have to find that answer.

  • lylian

    Ooops, not “resurrection” on the streets but Insurrection!! blush! my bad.

  • Frenchy

    You see…I don’t like to talk politics but there’s trouble in Egypt and Libya at the US consulates. They were attacked today for various reasons. That isn’t the main point for me. For me, the US has to NOT get baited in by other countries who are asking for help or show influence in uprisings supposedly to overthrow non democratic regimes. Why? because you don’t know if the new regimes will be US friendly or even truly democratic. Leadership means not only when to say yes but when to say no or at least stay on the fence a bit to really get a clearer picture. **ok stepping of soap box***

    http://www.deadline.com/2012/09/toronto-weinstein-co-pushes-brad-pitt-pic-killing-them-softly-back-into-oscar-race/

    Toronto: Weinstein Co Pushes Brad Pitt Pic ‘Killing Them Softly’ Back Into Oscar Race

    EXCLUSIVE: Taking advantage of a sliver of daylight in the Oscar season release corridor, The Weinstein Company has moved from an October 19 to a November 30 release on Killing Them Softly, the Andrew Dominik-directed crime drama that stars Brad Pitt, Scoot McNairy, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins and Ray Liotta. Pitt plays an enforcer who investigates a heist in a mob-sponsored card game. It is a smart move because the film was going against October 19 openers Paranormal Activity 4 and Alex Cross, the Rob Cohen-directed reboot of the James Patterson series that stars Tyler Perry. Right now, the film goes against the Nicolas Cage/John Cusack thriller The Frozen Ground and not much else. It also puts Pitt closer to the Oscar mix.

    Harvey Weinstein confirmed the move to me. “In this industry it is a very rare event to look at a weekend where your movie could open as the only wide release picture,” he said. “November 30th will allow us to bring Killing Them Softly to a wide audience without competition. Additionally, the critical response to the movie has been very favorable especially on the amazing performances and November 30th positions us better in the Awards season calendar.”
