Angelina Jolie: Zaatari Refugee Camp Visit!

Angelina Jolie pays a visit to the Zaatari Refugee Camp on Tuesday (September 11) near the Jordanian border with Syria.

The 37-year-old actress and UNHCR special envoy was joined by UN High Commission for Refugees staff to visit some of the more than 250,000 refugees who have fled Syria. The United Nations is calling the humanitarian problems sparked by the conflict their “biggest crisis”.

“It’s been a very heavy experience, because oftentimes you come to these camps and … very rarely do you … meet them as they cross the border and you get to know people the moment they become a refugee,” Angelina said in a press conference. “The moment they’ve forever lost their home, their livelihood, their education, everything they have been is gone, and when I ask them, ‘What did you bring?’ they say ‘This’ (plucks at her shirt) ‘The shirt on my back.’”

The evening before, Angelina visited some refugees minutes after they made it across the border.

The US ambassador to Libya has died after an attack by militiamen on the US consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, reports say.

Ambassador Christopher Stevens is said to be among four US officials killed in a protest over a US-produced film that is said to insult the Prophet Muhammad.
The US state department has only confirmed the death of one official – but it has not named them.
Protesters have also attacked the US embassy in Cairo over the film.
In the attack in Benghazi, unidentified armed men stormed the grounds, shooting at buildings and throwing handmade bombs into the compound.
Security forces returned fire but Libyan officials say they were overwhelmed.
A Libyan official has said Ambassador Stevens died from suffocation as a result of the attack.
    ‘No justification’
There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind”
In a statement earlier, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confirmed the death of a US official, saying: “We are heartbroken by this terrible loss”.
“Some have sought to justify this vicious behaviour as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet,” she said in a statement.
“The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.”

Reports say a militia known as the Ansar al-Sharia brigade was involved in the attack, but the group has denied the claim, the BBC’s Rana Jawad in Tripoli says.
Our correspondent says many people are still armed following the conflict that overthrew Col Muammar Gaddafi last year.

The film that sparked the demonstration is said to have been produced by a 52-year-old US citizen from California named Sam Bacile, and promoted by an expatriate Egyptian Copt.

The two men are described as having anti-Islamic views.

Good morning fans. Angie has had a few very hard days. IMO, I believe this was one of her more difficult trips because of what the children are experiencing. I’m sure she is seeing her children in those refugees children faces and it’s hard for her to imagined. Because of this trip all the news are focusing on Syria. Let’s hope they keep the pressure on the government to stop killing their citizens and return the people home where they belong. I know it will take time but you must start from somewhere, jmo. I’m wishing Angie a safe return to her family in a day or two, safe trip home Angie, you done good.

  • Rose

@sunny: Thanks for the news about the embassy attack. I was unaware of the news because I did not check the news on line, I’m praying for all in the region. I’m seconding Sec of State Clinton sentiments “we are heartbroken by this terrible loss”. I’m praying Angelina makes it home safely.

Jolie Visits Syrian Refugees in Lebanon, Meets Miqati

U.N. refugee agency’s special envoy actress Angelina Jolie arrived in Lebanon on Wednesday to visit the Syrians who fled the turmoil in their country.

Jolie expressed concern for the alarming humanitarian situation the Syrians are passing through.

The Hollywood star, accompanied by U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, held a meeting with Prime Minister Najib Miqati at the Grand Serail.

Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled the chaos as an uprising against President Bashar Assad has become increasingly violent.

The U.N. says more than 1.2 million Syrians, over half of them children, have become internally displaced in the country while an estimated 250,000 refugees sought shelter in neighboring Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq.

With around 40,000 refugee in Lebanon.

On Tuesday, Jolie visited a refugee camp in Jordan where she appealed to the world to “do everything they can to support these refugees” fleeing the escalating conflict in their country.

She is expected to arrive in Turkey on Thursday to visit Syrian refugee camps near the border with the conflict-ravaged country.

UNHCR says it has so far only received a little over $9 million in aid for a regional appeal it has made for the Syrian refugees.

The UNHCR in April promoted Jolie from serving as its goodwill ambassador to special envoy due to her exceptional work for the agency.

Jolie to visit refugee camps in southern Turkish province

Hollywood star and UN special envoyAngelina Jolie is expected to visit refugee camps in the southern Turkish province of Hatay tomorrow, Hürriyet Daily News reported citing sources closely involved with the issue.

It is not yet clear whether Jolie will stay in Turkey for more than one day, or whether she will accompany UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) Antonio Guterres who will pay a two-day visit to Turkey over the course of tomorrow and Sept 14. Jolie’s last visit to Turkey was in June 2011 to Hatay’s Altınözü district.

Jolie also visited the refugee camp in Jordan, which currently hosts about 30,000 Syrians displaced by the violence.

“I am very concerned, the world is very concerned,” The Associated Press quoted Jolie as saying during her high-profile visit, which aimed to focus international attention on the plight of Syrian refugees and to attract more funding to help them. “What is very heartbreaking is when Syrian people ask you why you think no one is able to find a solution for them.”

“What they described on the ground, hearing it from them is so horrific,” she said, adding that the children’s stories were especially moving. Guterres appealed to the international community to “help us and help the Jordanian government … in order to be able to massively invest in improving the living conditions of refugees in this camp … please help us.”

In Geneva, meanwhile, UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said the number of refugees who have fled Syria for neighboring countries since the start of the conflict nearly 18 months ago had reached more than 250,000.

“The latest figures show that more than a quarter of a million Syrian refugees (253,106 people) have now been registered in the surrounding region, or are awaiting registration,” Edwards said, according to AFP.

(The Daily Star :: Lebanon News :: http://www.dailystar.com.lb)

ANKARA: Hollywood star and U.N. special envoy Angelina Jolie will travel to Turkey on Thursday to visit Syrian refugee camps near the border with the conflict-ravaged country, a Turkish diplomat told AFP.
The Oscar-winning actress, accompanied by U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, will probably visit a camp housing 12,000 refugees in Kilis province and may visit a second camp in Gaziantep province, the diplomat said.
Jolie, who first visited another refugee camp in Turkey in June last year, will also travel to Ankara for talks with officials.
On Tuesday, Jolie visited a refugee camp in Jordan where she appealed to the world to “do everything they can to support these refugees” fleeing the escalating conflict in their country.
Turkey, which shares a 910-kilometer (560-mile) border with Syria, is home to some 80,000 refugees in several camps in its southeast.
Ankara has called for safe zones to protect people on Syrian soil, but the proposal fell on deaf ears at a U.N. Security Council meeting last month.

Amman, Sept 11 (Petra) — Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh on Tuesday discussed with U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie, developments in Syria and the humanitarian repercussions of the conflict on the region’s countries, including Jordan.

Judeh highlighted the services provided by Jordan to Syrian refugees who fled their country due to the ongoing violence.

Jordan, he said, will continue under directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II to offer services to Syrian brethren, despite the lack of resources, mainly in the energy and water fields.

The minister urged the international community to support the Kingdom in hosting the refugees. He also valued aid provided by Arab and other world countries as well as international organizations.

Judeh reiterated the need to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis that puts an end to violence and bloodshed.

He also urged the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and support regional states to cope with the humanitarian fallout of the Syrian crisis.

The UN commissioner said Jordan is a regional stabilizing force and urged the international community to assist the Kingdom to accommodate Syrian refugees.

The foreign minister accompanied Guterres and Jolie on a visit to the Zaatari camp during which they looked into educational and health services offered to Syrian refugees.

UN refugee chief and Special Envoy Angelina Jolie visit displaced Syrians in Jordan
11 September 2012 – As the number of Syrians fleeing their country continues to increase, the head of the United Nations refugee agency and that body’s special envoy, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, visited a camp in Jordan, where they met some of the of thousands of people that have crossed the border to escape the violence in the Middle Eastern country.
High Commissioner António Guterres and Ms. Jolie visited the Za’atri refugee camp, located in a desert region near the Syrian border, and currently holding some 28,000 refugees, out of a total of 85,000 Syrians who are currently registered or awaiting refugee registration in Jordan.
“I am grateful to Jordan and other border countries for keeping their borders open, for saving these people’s lives. They are dying in Syria,” Ms. Jolie said a media encounter today. “If they were unable to escape with their families many of the people here, many of the people I met today would in fact be dead. It’s an extraordinary thing that they are doing.”
According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the actual number of refugees in Jordan is thought to be much higher, and, overall, more than a quarter of a million people have now been registered with the agency, or are awaiting registration in countries around Syria.
Syria has been wracked by violence since an uprising began against President Bashar al-Assad some 18 months ago. More than 18,000 people, mostly civilians, have died since fighting broke out though reports indicate a major escalation of violence in recent weeks in many towns and villages, as well as the country’s two biggest cities, Aleppo and Damascus.
Addressing the media in Geneva today, a UNHCR spokesperson, Adrian Edwards, said the visit was aimed at not only showing solidarity with refugees, but also to recognize the commitment of the Jordanian people and Government to protect vulnerable civilians.
“Refugees tell us that artillery and air attacks are continuing in villages and towns close to the Jordanian border,” Mr. Edwards said. “There are reports of thousands of displaced people in Syria’s south, moving from village to village seeking safety before they can cross the border.”
Last night, Ms. Jolie visited Jordan’s border with Syria, where she met newly-arriving families – some 200 families made the dangerous crossing that night; shelling could be heard in the distance.
“It’s been a very heavy experience because often times you come to these camps,” the Special Envoy said. “We have all been around and met with people in conflict situations, but rarely do you come when you meet them as they cross the border and you get to know people the moment they become a refugee, the moment they have lost their home, their schooling, their livelihoods, their education, everything that they have been is gone. And when I asked them, ‘what did you bring?’ they say this, and they show [their] back.” According to UNHCR, some refugees report being displaced five or six times before finally leaving the country. While the number of people crossing the border tends to fluctuate depending on the security situation in Syria, on average, some 2,000 new arrivals occur daily, with most people crossing the border at night, the agency noted.
“We do encourage the international community to do everything it can to support these people and to support them here until they can go home one day. There is much that needs to be done,” Ms. Jolie said. “It’s a very, very difficult situation and of the appeals that came out – which still have not been met – [they] weren’t even prepared to take into account the extent of what was going to happen, how many people. It grows. The numbers are growing. The conflict is growing.”
Following their visit to the camps, Mr. Guterres and Ms. Jolie are expected to meet King Abdullah II of Jordan, as well as the country’s prime minister and foreign affairs ministers.
UNHCR, along with the Jordanian Government and its partners, is working to assist displaced persons. However, the agency states that the conditions at Za’atri camp – located in windswept desert – are harsh, with many refugees living in tents.
“With winter approaching, we hope to be able to move people into prefabricated housing, which is arriving at a rate of up to 30 homes a day, giving priority to the most vulnerable families,” Mr. Edwards said at the Geneva media briefing.
Addressing the same briefing, a spokesperson for the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that more than 550,000 people are in need of health assistance in Syria’s Homs municipality alone.
“There are 150 schools hosting internally displaced persons. The shelters that have recently opened provide poor living conditions, there is no electricity and the water and sanitation conditions are not functioning properly. Refuse is piling up – and has not been collected for several weeks

“There are 150 schools hosting internally displaced persons. The shelters that have recently opened provide poor living conditions, there is no electricity and the water and sanitation conditions are not functioning properly. Refuse is piling up – and has not been collected for several weeks,” the spokesperson, Tarik Jasarevic, said.
He added that lack of access to health care facilities and health workers is one of the main obstacles being faced, with at least 50 per cent of medical doctors having left Homs. “At present, many of the health facilities are staffed with volunteers who have no medical or health training,” he noted.
WHO, which recently participated in a UN exploratory mission to Homs to assess how it can increase its presence there, is currently delivering basic health and water testing kits. It has also requested $31 million in funding support for its activities in the Syria Humanitarian Response Plan, to effectively respond to humanitarian health needs inside the country.
Earlier this month, the United Nations and its partners increased their humanitarian appeal for the Response Plan from $180 million to $347 million, due to the doubling of the number of people in need since July, to 2.5 million.
The revised Response Plan focuses on the priority areas of health, food, livelihoods, infrastructure rehabilitation, community services, education and shelter, in Homs, Hama, Idlib, Damascus, rural Damascus, Deir Ezzor and Aleppo, as well as areas hosting large numbers of internally displaced people.

SHE is Hollywood royalty, a genuine A-lister with an Oscar-winning career, a face that’s launched a thousand male fantasies, that superstar husband, and a gaggle of beautiful children.

Angelina Jolie appears to have it all – making it understandably difficult for the rest of the world to warm to her.

But yesterday, at a refugee camp in Jordan, Angelina presented a very different face.

With her hair pulled back into a simple pony tail and her eyes filling with tears, she listened carefully and repeatedly to the stories of refugees who have fled the civil war in Syria.

“Body parts separated and burned people being pulled apart like chicken – a little nine-year-old girl said that,” she said after visiting the camp near the Syrian border as a special envoy to the United Nation’s refugee agency.

This was about as far removed from the glamour of the red carpet as it gets.

Jolie, wearing a black long-sleeved t-shirt and black slacks, was brought to the Jordanian border by its military before witnessing firsthand the heartbreak of mothers fleeing their homeland with their children and little else.

Her empathy for their plight was palpable. Here was a mother like any other.

“The amount of innocent children that have been reported dead, the amount of innocent children I’ve met here who are wounded and unaccompanied – with their parents being killed and now they’re on their own – it’s impossible to imagine any mother standing by and not stepping up and doing something to prevent this,” she said.

Tears again welled up in her eyes after she toured the sprawling tent city that is now home to 27,000 Syrians displaced by the 18-month conflict.

“I am very concerned, the world is very concerned,” she said. But, when it comes to solutions at least, Angelina is as almost as helpless as the rest of the world.

“What is very heartbreaking is when Syrian people ask you why you think no one is able to find a solution for them,” she said.

“What they described on the ground, hearing it from them, is so horrific.”

However, what she can do is use her star quality to highlight their plight. And that is exactly what is happening.

She has made numerous trips to the world’s troublespots as a United Nations goodwill ambassador – with ABC News in the US yesterday describing her as “the world’s most famous advocate for refugees”.

It is in marked contrast from how she is often portrayed in celebrity magazines – the seducer who lured Brad Pitt from former wife Jennifer Aniston, or the former wild child once involved in a toxic relationship with actor Billy Bob Thornton.

She is, it seems, human after all.

“I am grateful to Jordan and the border countries for saving the lives (of those) who are dying in Syria,” she said yesterday.

“It’s an extraordinary thing. We encourage the international community to support the people here until one day they go back home.”

    Rose how are you ?

This is one of the many reasons I love and respect her.
I am so tired of hearing that she broke up Jen and Brad. Get over it. First of all, Brad said himself that the reason their marriage failed because he wanted to start a family and she promised him right after Friends ended. She lied. She went on to do half ass films. And must we not forget anything Jen does for charity, she has to get paid for it. While Angie goes to places that even our government doesn’t have the balls to go. She speaks about what is happening in other countries that are so less fortunate than us and remember that Syria isn’t exactly a safe place especially right now. Yet she goes there to see the truth of what the news media fails to inform us. And she speaks the truth of what is actually happening.
Oh BTW, those of ou think Jen is so wonderful, need us not forget her fiance was in fact in a relationship when they hooked up. So stop judging someone who does for the great of good, especially for the children who cannot defend themselves in this terrible crisis. Angie does more in one day for these people that Jen could ever do in a lifetime. And guess what Angie does it because she cares. Not for a paycheck or a tax deduction so back off!!

In case you are wondering how I know about Jen, I have friends who do a lot of charitable events and has asked Jen for her to attend. She woudnt unless there was. Check in it…for herself. So unless you actually know the truth about these people stop crucifying Angie and get a life.

I’d be surprised if Porgie and Wrestling Chick aren’t still together. He has no movies in Oscar contention this year so he doesn’t need to change hoes yet. Gravity’s been pushed back to sometime next year and he hasn’t filmed anything else in the last 18 months. Wrestling Ho’s got at least 6-8 months, maybe more, left. I’m actually rooting for Wrestling Ho. I think she’s going to be the one to buck the trend. That’s right, I’m going bold here. I predict Wrestling Chick will last AT LEAST 2 FULL YEARS! You heard it here first, folks…

She looks too good to be with Brad. They must have broke up and he’s lying about ShT in his interviews. Angie never looked this good with him, uh huh. Hahahhaahahahhaah

    It’s a wrap brangtards.

@Passing Through: You are hilarious. You actually think Brad has a chance at an Oscar, oh wait, Brad thinks he has a chance too. Bwhahhahahahha

I guess her fauxmanitarian trips are just that….fake…she gets off on others’ pain and suffering.

Awwww…now, Dawne…is that any way to be? Have some sympathy, would ya? Can’t you see the trolls are in pain? Angie going on a UNHCR mission has clearly sent them over the edge – again. Those poor nurses at the nuthouse are being run ragged dispensing extra dosages of Xanax, Haloperidol and Clozapine. The folks at Pfizer, Bristol-Myers/Squibb and GlaxoSmithKleine are happy, happy, happy because every time Angie makes a public appearance their sales go through the roof. Stock tip for all you investors out there – go out and buy stock in pharmaceutical companies anytime Angie makes a public appearance…
