Johnny Depp: Shirtless on 'Lone Ranger' Set!

Johnny Depp goes shirtless as he shoots some scenes dressed in costume as Tonto for his upcoming film The Lone Ranger on Wednesday (September 19) in Arcadia, Calif.

The 49-year-old actor recently spoke at TIFF about what drew him to the documentary West of Memphis to MTV News.

“I believe it was Henry Rollins, also a longtime supporter and friend of Damien‘s [Echols], who said it, and it’s absolutely true: it could have been any of us,” Johnny said. “Because, what, you look different? [The authorities] put their eyeball on Damien and didn’t take it off, even though everything around them — they didn’t look at the insane amount of holes in the case. They just looked at the guy with the black T-shirt and the long black hair. It was a witch hunt.”

The documentary centers on the infamous case of the West Memphis Three.

    I love his make up here. This movie looks good. It will be interesting to see his adaptation of the character.

    Andrea Says:

    HAHA! not exactly what you imagine when you read “johnny depp shirtless” but the scene looks fun nonetheless

    Me34 Says:

    I know he’s a good actor and everything, but why are still caucasian actors portraying ethnic roles? I know he’s 1/16 Cherokee, but you don’t see minority actors doing the opposite. I know there’ll be a lot of people below my comment complaining about it, and arguing with “there’s no many native American actors”, but trust me, there are (and if you think it’s because they don’t have enough talent, for some reason casting calls exist).

    A Says:

    @Me34: It’s not about that. They need a big name, a leading man for Tonto since he is the lead in this movie. It will focus more on him so it makes sense that they went for Johnny.
    If the role wasn’t as big, they could go for a 100% native American but like I said, they need a big name to attract movie goers and make $$.

    Even with the weird makeup, fake nose and those high pants, I think he looks good

    One trick pony!

    @4 Says:

    But people don’t go to movies just to see Johnny Depp, anymore. That’s why his non-POTC movies BOMB. He doesn’t attract movie goers, OR money.
    Using a talented Native American actor would have more draw than this sell out.

    pixie Says:

    What about Adam Beach,nathanial arcand,michael greyeyes,bronson pelletier and the other guys from twilight. There are many actors that have impressive parts behind them however the questions is would they want to get involved in a project like Tonto.

    @7 Says:

    Maybe you could be an adviser for movie executives!
    Because, of course you know much more better about the business than those stupid, who offer Johnny millions and millions convinced that if those movies that you called “BOMB” always does over than 200 millions Worldwide it’s because him!
    They all are so wrong…even a pathetic hater in justjared knows better than them about Johnny’s box office power, isn’t it?

    pixie Says:

    The last native american who played Tonto did such a great job that he was type cast. Many native americans try to avoid being type cast which is hard when the selection of movies they are offered usually is pertained to their ethnicity.

    Melanie Says:

    @@4: Johnny was never, ever a mainstream actor so box office status has never been his thing. He used to go out of his way to play the ‘odd’ characters. POTC was simply successful. And let’s face it, it was because of Johnny. He was bloody hilarious. He’s a character actor and he’ll probably rock this role. And the Twilight lads are lovely guys but cannot act.

    PuertoRicanGurl Says:

    overrated and crazy!

    @9 Says:

    Studios make most of their profit in American theaters. They don’t make that much in the rest of the world. So if a movie bombs in the US, the studio will loose money, no matter what happens overseas.
    Studios will stop spending millions on Johnny, if they don’t get a return on their investment.
    He was known as box office poison before POTC, and it looks like he is earning that name all over again.

  14. 14
    brenda Says:

    First of all…Johnny looks sooo hot here,even with that fake nose too =) yummy! Second..@7..what are you talking about ?POTC4 was a hit ..1000 Millions !!!! And he was alone without Keira and Orlando,Johnny carried the movie!! He is still successful and he will be successful too! Face it hater!

    @14 Says:

    Guess you missed the post that stated :
    “But people don’t go to movies just to see Johnny Depp, anymore. That’s why his non-POTC movies BOMB”
    US box office:
    The Tourist? Bomb
    Dark Shadows? Bomb
    Rum Diary? Nuclear Bomb
    Facts are facts.

  16. 16
    brenda Says:

    @15 Well…do you know any actor whose movies were ALL HITS? Brad Pitt or George Clooney? No…so don’t say bullshit.(sorry)

  17. 17
    Tracy Says:

    @Me34: I totally agree. I’m also NA and I’m pissed that they gave JD this role. There are plenty of good NA actors that can play this role and play it well. JD is even sporting a fake nose and it pissed me the hell off. I’m personally banning this movie because if it…don’t get me wrong I like JD and I do think he is a good actor, but there are just too many good NA actors to let this one slide. I can’t believe the NA assoc. is not protesting this movie because of JD being cast as an NA.

  18. 18
    Tracy Says:

    @A: Well then give JD the role of the Lone Ranger and cast a real NA to play Tonto…

  19. 19
    Julie Says:

    I’m thinking one of two things happened here because Tonto is supposed to be the main focus. #1 They wanted a high-rated top actor who will bring a HUGE audience with him. or #2 Johnny said he was interested when he heard about it and they jumped at the chance to have him. Probably and hopefully nothing against any Native American actors. I do happen to think that Johnny has a strong resemblance to the Cherokees. I also know he’s proud of that heritage.

    Jeff Says:

    Hate to burst everyone’s bubble, but Depp was not on set. This was his double. Working on the crew, we were told Depp MIGHT show up for 1-2 minor scenes, but that plan was scrapped and he ended up doing that at the studio, on a set.

    Erin Cole Says:

    Johnny Depp is gorgeous. Hard for someone to stand out in terms of looks in Hollywood, but he is a real knockout.
