Gerard Butler: 'Despierta America' Appearance!

Gerard Butler suits up as he makes an appearance on Despierta America at Univision Studios on Tuesday morning (November 27) in Miami, Fla.

The 43-year-old actor, who was interviewed by host Karla Martinez, promoted his new film Playing For Keeps and talked about how he wished he was Latin.

“I wish I was Latin because everyone is from a different country, but there such a great camaraderie between everybody,” Gerard expressed. “All the women (Latinas) are unbelievably beautiful, and the guys are so fun. It’s a really nice atmosphere.”

Can not believe I’m the first to post. From what I saw it was so funny when that (guy – I hope that was not a woman) came out, asking him to marry her. His face was priceless.

He really knows what to say to please the listeners atm. Like when boybands or some male singer does interviews in different countries and says: Yeah the French/German/Dutch (depending on which country he’s being interviewed in) are the prettiest and I sure wanna live here!

    Yeah huh.

    repost from other thread Says:

    From Devil’s Advocate –
“Commenting on a fan site is a first, but there is something strangely gripping about Gerard Butler’s whole persona – it is sad, a little distasteful and enveloping. People are saying pretty mean things and, while I can understand why they are saying it (and probably wouldn’t risk being alone with him and his charms myself), I think it’s a little harsh and doesn’t really take into account a lot of serious issues.

His lothario reputation clearly seems to precede him – and, true, he has little interest in bucking that label. Yet, as time goes on, he has revealed more and more about how he became this man – who is a little tragic in his loneliness and internal pain. In one interview, he names three girls from his pre-fame youth who rejected him. He obviously knew how devastating it would be to call them out by name, and that they would be hounded by paparazzi. After all these years and all of the countless women he has wooed and likely bedded, he still needed to punish these women for wounding his ego and rejecting them (yes, I believe thats why he did it, whether consciously or not). In some ways, I believe he needs to keep jumping from woman to woman to prove to himself, those women and everyone else that he is a man so desirable that he can toy with and drop even the world’s most beautiful women. He parties too hard and leaps from increasingly dangerous activities with little regard for his own mortality (check out the Men’s Health recent article) and can’t seem to ground himself. It doesn’t excuse him acting like an ass towards himself and others, but that man is totally lost spiritually and emotionally and is spiraling out of control.
In a Bonnie Hunt interview (and another article I read that I can’t recall) he mentioned that his father had abandoned him for years, came back into his life at 16, only to die of cancer at 22 after a relatively brief reconciliation. He admitted that he cried and experienced terrible pain after his father returned – and soon after his father died, his wild partying behavior spiraled out of control (obviously related to this emotionally devastating situation with his dad) and led to him getting fired from his law job right before qualifying to be a lawyer. He not only had to face the fact that his father had abandoned him (which would’ve devastated his feelings of self worth) – and, you don’t need to be a genius to see just why he decided to be a part of Chasing Mavericks with both his and Jay Moriarity’s characters dealing with father issues (and was so reckless he almost died filming it) – but he also was dealing with feelings that he let his family down. He said his family was looking to him to be the first lawyer in the family, a prospect which was a source of incredible pride to his mother. Since he was fired from that firm, he clearly pursued fame relentlessly to prove that he could do even better. In many respects, to turn those professional and romantic disappointments into spectacular success is unbelievably admirable – and makes him someone for whom I have extraordinary respect, even if the stories that make him out to be a cad are true.

Watching him with this in mind is terribly saddening because it doesn’t seem that all of the success has filled whatever hole in his soul that drove him to this success initially. He just seems to be spinning directionless toward danger and excitement and empty relationships with pretty, famous women — but the man clearly is chasing shadows and now at 43 doesn’t seem to have much substance in his life to anchor him to anything (except, I hope, his mother).

The guy fascinates me because unless you really read what he’s said and piece it together, he’s some rich, famous playboy living a dream life. However, I believe the truth is that man is spending his life chasing more and more harbingers of professional and romantic “success” to overcome deeply ingrained and crushing feelings of inadequacy. A beautiful, sad figure – tragic unto himself and any woman who genuinely believes she will find a satisfying life partner in him. After all he’s suffered and what he was able to achieve to overcome it, I truly wish he finds true happiness and acceptance in himself and a soul mate who will be capable of loving him (and whom he will be capable of loving).
I definitely don’t know him, and maybe I’m doing a little projection of my own issues onto him and romanticizing him without sufficient justification, so I might be wrong, but I just thought maybe someone should defend him and make a case on his behalf that is more than just about his looks.”

    @repost Says:

I copied it here because I thought it was very well written and didn’t want it to disappear. I think you are very on track with your observations. I will add that lots of the negative posts on these threads reflect the disappointment many long-term fans have with GB’s life choices and work. Many here have followed him for a while, because at first they found him refreshingly down-to-earth and approachable. But that enthusiasm has turned, in many cases, to frustration and disgust. Are fans too invested in this man, for good and bad? Yes. But I think much of the “hate” is really just disappointment and frustration that he does not seem to get it. But of course, that is his path, and no one can make him do what they think would be the right thing. He has to figure things out for himself, and maybe he just won’t.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. Don’t forget that his mom told him his father was dead for years before he showed back up in his life.
In the mean time Gerry just found big success 7 yrs ago and I think he is enjoying it and the money it has brought. So I say let him have fun for now. He will settle down when he is ready.
But usually when someone is constantly seeking the approval of the opposite sex they usually are insecure about something about themselves.

    Saveyourpity Says:

@@repost: This was well-written and heartfelt, but as one who was also abandoned by my father, I have to take exception to his choices. Yes, abandonment causes all kinds of issues, lack of self-esteem being the most dominant, but as adults we all have to face the reality of our childhoods and do whatever it takes to overcome it. There are millions in the world who’ve had worse obstacles to overcome than abandonment by a parent. Far worse. He has exceptional good fortune and resources, and yet imo is very self-indulgent and narcissistic in how he handles his “issues.” Most likely for the very reason that he CAN indulge himself with whatever diversion he chooses, instead of dealing with it head on, which is what most have to do, and what most do with the grind of everyday life to deal with as well. I wouldn’t feel too sorry for him if I were you. There are millions out there who are more deserving of pity.

  19. 19

@Strings of Lights: Is that true? His mother told him that his father was dead??!!

  20. 20
    Realist Says:

So because he has money and fame means he should be happy? Most people are their own worst enemy, no matter how successful they are. Most “successful” people are that way because they are fighting with the insecurity of their childhoods. It’s what drives them. Let’s not forget all the celebrities who died of drug overdoses or suffer from debilitating mental illnesses. Living life under a microscope would send me to the funny farm. And GB has this unhealthy obsession to be liked and wanted. That is clearly unhealthy and maladjusted.

    @Strings of Lights
No, not last night. They just asked him a question about who he would have on his voice mail if he changed it – he said “His Mum”. The TMZ girls weren’t impressed, said it indicated a Mamma’s Boy! I’m not sure what day the clip was filmed; it was at night and I doubt if he would have been back in LA from Miami for it to have been last night.

  24. 24
    Whaaaat? Says:

@Strings of Lights: wow, um… IF that is true…that might have something to do with his behavior towards women if you think about it.

  25. 25
    Sunshine Daydream Says:

Mr. Butler is one of many, many people in the world abandoned by a parent. Just because he is famous does not mean he deserves any more pity than anyone else. And he was allowed those 6 years to spend with his dad. How many never get that chance? As far as being discarded by girlfriends, his alleged behaviour with women shows he learned nothing and has no empathy. Sorry, tender subject for me.

  26. 26
    Strings of Lights Says:

I think he understands that his mom was just trying to protect him. After all she had to raise 3 kids by herself and his dad had no part of it and no contact for years. Her choice otherwise would have been to try and explain to a young child over and over why his father didn’t want to have anything to do with them. Then at 16 his father decides to walk back in his life. From what it sounded like in the interview G had an understanding of what took place.

  27. 27
    Totally Useless Information Says:

That is not true. Margaret never told GB his father was dead. He asked if she thought he’d ever see his dad again and she said she didn’t think so since his dad pretty much didn’t show his face for years. But she never made up lies about is father being dead. You must have misunderstood.

  28. 28
    Realist Says:

    @Sunshine Daydream:

No one should excuse his behavoir. But be grateful he had 6 yrs?!!! Oh yeah that takes the sting out! From what I read and saw in interviews, his dad told him out of the blue. Oh yeah by the way I’m going to die shortly. I have met countless men like him and having an absentee parent is not the only issue that has brought them to where they are in life. There are so many things left unsaid by GB and his clan that effected him. You can bet the farm on that.

  29. 29
    Whaaaat? Says:

@Strings of Lights: no excuse for lying though, I’m sorry to disagree because I know what you mean about all the good she has done & he surely loves & respects his mother BUT that is one enormous lie told BY a woman close to his heart. Bound to have had a huge impact if not consciously then subconsciously. IMO.

In the other hand classy latin people do not watch “Telemundo”. Those shows “Despierta América” and “Al Rojo vivo” are so trashy. I mean, really. And he is so desperate that he is totally flirting with that woman Maria Celeste Arrarás. He looks so needy. I feel pitty because after all I think Gerry is a good guy who is too immature. My father left me when I was young and i’m not a ridiculous person. And i’m way younger than Gerry. Way younger.

I understand where you are coming from.I to have had a struggling life, but my faith has kept me happy. I have learned that I have a choice. I can choose to dwell on the woes in my life or I can choose to dwell on the blessings.
None of us know what truly makes G the way he is and why he lives his life like he does. We have all tried to summarize him here and there are never any easy answers. But I think some have been right about what makes him tick. I think the big contention here is the way he treats women. We may never know. Everyone has demons that we all have to deal with.

  34. 34
    Sunshine Daydream Says:

@Realist: Yes, he should be grateful for the 6 years, IMO. He didn’t run the other way, but rather embraced the opportunity to spend that time with him. Probably getting what he could from his dad while he was offering. What you have written can be appplied to every other person on the planet, IMO. But different perceptions makes the spice of life, right, Realist?!

  35. 35
    Another Opinion Says:

He has said in interviews that he didn’t know whether his father was dead or alive because his family didn’t have news from his father for years. No one lied to him about his father being dead. He has had his issues growing up, but he is not an exception. Many people have traumatic events in their childhood and live without a parent, so this no excuse for the choices he has made. He is definitely not a kid anymore and is accountable for his actions. If he believes that he is on a destructive path because of unresolved emotional issues, it’s his responsibility as an adult to seek professional help.

  36. 36
    Saveyourpity Says:

@Sunshine Daydream: I never got that chance, either. IMO, just judging by my own reaction to abandonment, I think he’s leaving people before they leave him. I’ve always felt everyone will leave, and it’s always in the back of your mind.

  37. 37
    Sunshine Daydream Says:

@Strings of Lights: you are right – everyone has demons that we all have to deal with. The ones who will defeat the majority of their demons are the ones who actually DEAL with them, as you put it. IMO, Mr. Butler does not appear to take the healthy steps to deal with those issues. But we will never know. All we have to go by are repeated behaviours in so many circumstances which indicate otherwise. Just my perception.

    Strings of Lights Says:

Thanks for posting that interview. Another time he did say that they thought his dad was dead. Maybe he should have put it that they assumed he was dead.
Interesting how he said he went after negative attention. He still does that today.

  42. 42
    Sunshine Daydream Says:

@Saveyourpity: Yes, it is always there. Learning to trust people is the most difficult part of abandonment to conquer, IMO. Many never do. I am lucky that my dad pushed me into analysis and surrounded me with good people after my mum left when I was 6. I have never heard from her since and that was over 20 years ago. The distrust creeps in now and then, but overall I am a very content 28 yo because I have dealt with it. Best of luck to you.

    @ repost from another thread

I totally disagree. I have no sympathy for him in regards to his absent dad. From what I hear he had a loving,  supportive mother and step father.  Maybe too loving and supportive, because he’s now showing his true colours, that of a self indulged, egotistical, selfish, immature,  misogynistic brat. As I’ve said before, many have lost their parent/parents at an early age and they’re aren’t as whiney and spoilt as him.

  44. 44
    whatshedonenow Says:

From what I have read his father wasn’t that great an influence on him anyway.  Correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t he the one who may have been a strong influence on Butler’s less than salubrious view of women.

  48. 48
    Realist Says:

Many women/parents tend to overcompensate for the sins of the other parent, whether they are in the home or not. It’s not intentional. In GB’s case his siblings actually knew their father so he was already odd man out. He is the third child, also the youngest so as far as family dynamics are supposed to go, his mother’s grip wasn’t as tight so it isn’t going to be expected that he’s the most responsible one.

  49. 49

@belinda: my my my. What a piece of work he is. Did you watch the vids? Did you see the one he picked to marry. She met his type in every way. He’s like a middle-school boy let loose in the girl’s locker room every single day

@Strings of Lights: and he didn’t just find major success 7yrs ago. He was cast as Andrew Lloyd Webbers Phantom in about 2002, and had already appeared in what at the time was the most watched miniseries eger, Atilla, the previous year. He’d already had success in the Oscar winning film Mrs Brown and appeared in two popular UK tv series back in the 90s. Success does exist outside the USA you know.

    Realist Says:

I do because he said it kinda worked. I also think when he said a bit, that in actuality it was very little bit. Most of his women live on scraps of his affection. It was probably the “google her” remark, as we all know MG loves to be known. I am laughing at the “if other people describe his type”. I would say that’s true because if there are no tall dark skinned women he’ll still find someone to sleep with and girlfriends in the past haven’t always been tall or dark skinned. Spicy. I hate that. Yeah, at first men call it spicy but as time goes on they call it b/itchy.

  62. 62
    DocP Says:

JMO, and I could be wrong, but based on his behavior of late, and the answers he’s giving in interviews, I think they are done. If they’re not, if I was dating him I would get out now, because the handwriting’s on the wall. He’s talking and acting like a single guy, and there’s no reason for him to pretend to be single for the movie. The elephant in the room is the amount of time they are NOT together these days. I bet that remark he made about doing something extreme in his last relationship was when he asked her to go to Iceland on the spur of the moment, because he said in the MJ article he usually doesn’t go to those extremes (can’t remember the word he used now). He said “last” relationship, not “current.” If she hangs around after all this, then she’s not real smart. He’s a player and always will be.

People react differently to any given situation and it’s not fair to judge one person’s trauma to another’s. Some get PTSD and some re-adjust more easily. Men especially have different enmotional levels and Gerry seems to be more senstive than the average male.

in his last relationship he did something “extreme”? Yeah, he learned her last name. its a big step for him.

he told an interviewer to “google” MG.? Wow. I’d tell him to google lorena bobbit.

    Masha Says:

So they are no longer together? I guess… If he didn’t say my current girlfriend… but my last…
And by drastic or extreme,I’m betting he meant that : he actually invited her to live with him when he met her.. there’s nothing more extreme than that…

  78. 78
    Masha Says:

Oh and by saying google her , he’s contributing to her pr and his ego it’s so transparent.. btw… she erased all the comments ever made about him on her fb, even photo comments…

  79. 79
    Clamsie Says:

@Masha: There’s no reason to assume MG is out of the picture. They probably have Christmas plans and she is still working on her film.

Meanwhile, all he has to do is phone the razzi and let them know he’s buying a new set of flipflops or picking his nose in public again and they’ll start a new thread.

I think the poster “Repost” makes a valid point about Gerry. He is a total mess and is now middleaged crazy with a hot and much younger gf. He’s not sure what to do, how to act. He’s got a lot of baggage from his early years and he hasn’t sorted much of it out, it seems.

I don’t remember his feet looking bad in CM.
Maybe an allergy to new shoes??

  92. 92
    What is that? Says:

@Manny: What’s your professional opinion, Manny, as to the nature of the scary looking feet? Looks like a fungal infection to me. It’s probably whatever is living in those orange-laced trainers he wears all the time.

  93. 93
    Masha Says:

Do you guys remember the interview : The Ugly Truth? When the interviewer asked him – would he ever be with a woman that has crusty feet? And he said :
It’s about 2:03… YOU HAVE TO HEAR THIS! After the talk about his feet.:)))

  94. 94
    Strings of Lights Says:

Maybe that is why he is wearing flip flops. They look painful. I had a cousin that feet broke out in horrible oozing blisters. It took a long time but she finally found out it was from certain dyes they used in shoes.

  95. 95
    angelsrock Says:

It looks like Athlete’s Foot. My sons had it a lot when they were playing sports in high school We figured they picked it up in the locker room showers. It was helluva to get rid of.
I guess he’s wearing the flip flops to air those babies out. Feet sweating inside shoes only makes matters worse. That’s an itchy mess.

  96. 96
    Strings of Lights Says:

Does it cause blisters like that??

  97. 97
    angelsrock Says:

I never remember blisters, just a very red bumpy itchy rash. Does it look like they are actually blisters? It may be something else then.

@Masha: He rather have good looks than personality for himself and the women he is with.

    Nothing new.

  99. 99
    Manny Says:

Angel, that is my guess. Most think it just occurs in the toes area but it is not uncommon for it to affect other parts of the foot.

  100. 100
    angelsrock Says:

I just went back to look again. It really does look like it’s just serious Athlete’s Foot. Raised red rash, more than blisters. The extremeness could be caused by the fact he had to wear shoes all day long at interviews.

  101. 101
    Manny Says:

Yes severe cases can cause blisters. Min you there are many many things it could be but athlete’s feet is quite common but manifests itself differently person to person.
I can’t stand my hubby’s dry feet but I’ll take his over blistery feet any day.

  102. 102
    Come on Says:

Are his feet seriously being picked on now? He better not ever get a hang nail or you all may implode. That being said, IMO all men should get regular pedicures like most women do. No shame in it.

  103. 103
    Strings of Lights Says:

I never had it and never knew anyone that did. Do they take oral anti fungals now for it? Just asking because it is so bad on him he really needs Drs care for it.

Exactly and who knows if he had shoes on on his flight there, plus add the humidity, etc…

    Devil's Advocate Says:

@Ornaments: first- I have never posted on any board about Gerard Butler or anyone else, under this or any other moniker.

Also, I wasn’t claiming to know him or authoritatively analyze him. I just noted that people were making some pretty harsh comments and I was just pointing out that he, and all celebrities, are humans with real issues. In my 2nd ever (follow up) and only other comment on that other thread, I also said that I didn’t condone his behavior but as a person who has gone through some traumatic events, who turned them around into extraordinary success, he has both my compassion and admiration. Since none of us are likely ever going to meet him, it is true we could never truly know who he is to defend him, it is also true that we can’t vilify him for the same exact reason. As a woman who doesn’t particularly care for men treating women poorly, I don’t care how attractive he is because I’d never want to date him (yes, very rhetorical as I’d never have a chance anyway). However, he has accomplished a lot from being thrown out of his job and wasting years in law school to end up at rock bottom without a career and a disappointment to his family, to dealing with the serious abandonment and emotional torment of regaining and then losing a father. Sure, other people have had it worse – and others have had it better, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a human being who went through some terrible things and came through very well (and on his own merit). So, he has my respect and admiration and for that reason, he is on my very, very short list of celebrities I would actually want to meet. Kindness and compassion aren’t sentiments that are on ration in this life, and I don’t think it’s terribly fair that just because he’s successful, desirable and a womanizer that he should be begrudged his pain and loss. Though I wouldn’t mind if he weren’t a womanizer… Of course. Hope that clarifies things, Ornamental.

Based on the location of the redness, he probably picks dead skin off his feet which can eventually become very painful and red. It also makes it difficult to have on shoes. Seen this before on my own feet unfortunately. It’s a nervous habit like biting nails.

Good news for GB, seems his new/old GF likes rich famous men regardless of hygeine. This from a man who is referred to in several places as having crusty pants. What an @ss/hole. MG “studied” ballet for 7yrs. Have you ever seen a real ballerina’s feet? Oh someone posted after her I’m still sick plane’re pregnant and it’s still there. Athletes foot is treated with a simply over the counter anti fungal foot spray like lotrimin. Easy to cure, now a nail fungus is harder to get rid of. You usually have to take Lamisil everyday for 3 months which also can be harsh on your liver.

Let me say that after viewing this video, there are several curiosities. She looks dead at the photog when she comes out and “gestures” towards that direction. Then one of the “drivers” notices the photog and looks straight in to it. How do you look in to a telephoto lens at a distance?? She starts to look back at it again but seems to catch herself. Amy looks that direction and around but seems oblivious like she was told one was around. Then Gerry, who has been texting, gets a scowl after he’s probably heard about the nearby photog and looks that way and starts to get in to the car but MG goes a different direction and now keeps her back turned. Then when the photog pans back, there’s a security guard standing right there next to him with a walkie talkie in his hands! What’s up with that? So apparently, in my view, the photog was “allowed” to be there filming. So who set this one up?? Give you three guesses and the first two don’t count!

“@LOL: Congratulations on your engagement, I wish you and your fiancé a life time of happiness.”
Hi, how are you? Thank you for your good wishes. :)
I am happy you said hi because you are the 4th person I mentioned that I didn’t remember their moniker. I put an O instead of Q. LOL. But you realized it was you.
I just checked back because I knew some of my friendly posters would be trying to reply after my long absence. Have a wonderful holiday season. Don’t let the nasty depressing comments bring you down.

  142. 142
    LOL Says:

Yes, you are right. One of the reasons I stopped posting is because there is nothing more to say. It’s obvious they are really together, as I believed from the very beginning and read the road signs properly, and not in a delusional way. Thus, I figured I’ll let the pictures of them together and his acknowledgements in various interviews do the talking for him. He doesn’t need me any longer. But thank you for keeping the fort. You are a very brave girl.
Additionally, the fact I have all these changes happening to my private life with my engagement just made it easier to stay away, not to mention my fiancé expecting me to “obey” him and stay away from JJ, lol. He finds it a futile waste of time when I can be so much more productive with my time. There is no doubt he is right, even though I do miss trashing these old hags sometimes.
It’s been a Rollo coaster engagement, I got to tell you. He took me down to Miami to propose. It was very romantic. I had no idea Gerry was there or just leaving or that my Fiancé was going to propose. It’s just as well because my Fiancé threated that if we run into Gerry (we were in NYC too while he was there a month and a half ago) he’s going to ask him what he thought of JJ and his jealous old-hag fans (he’s picking up some of lingo, lol) who constantly trash his GF and talk about him being a sleazy Lothario who likes younger hotter tighter girls (that was me picking up my BF’s lingo about men’s choices). LOL! I told him he shouldn’t do that because that’s very embarrassing to his fans that he should think they are that crazy and dying of jealousy, but my fiancé thinks is ridiculous that I am worried about making his fans look like fools, when they are fools and doing it to themselves. Come to think of it, it might be the only way to stop this madness. Maybe bringing this to his attention so he could address it in one of his interviews and tell his older fans that he is indeed serious about his GF, they will finally lay off. He doesn’t have to be nasty about it, just unequivocal so there is no confusion.
Well, come to think of it, there are some fans who will never accept it, even if he were more clear and explicit about his GF. It just makes them feel better to believe she is a ho and it’s a business arrangement between them, and once he gets his fill he’ll send her on her merry little way and hook up with an old hag the next day because he is just lusting for old-hag flesh to rock his world and fulfill all his needs in and out of the bedroom, and she will also be his emotional bulwark and straighten him out if he gets out of line like the mommy figure he always dreamed of in his sexual dreams, and she’ll ride with him in his limo and run his career, the old hag will, and she will choose projects for him and will fire Alan and keep him away from Ronnie, Freddy, Ariel, and all his friends because they are no good for him and they set a bad example for him and he needs mommy to protect him from bad people, and also said hag will make sure the fans that get to approach him aren’t so hot and definitely not young because then he might revert to his old ways and chase such hot young tighter fans so she will make sure only fat old cows like her get to take photos with him and get a signed autograph of his movie memorabilia, and in the bedroom the hag will make sure he is satisfied by her dried up, over-used-by-vibr/atos estrogen-filled-cream poss. So do you see, it doesn’t matter what Butler says about his true real-life GF, these useless jealous old hags will never accept it, and still will have that ridiculous fantasy he’ll dump her and hook up with them, in their dreams at least.
Well, that’s the gist of it. Hope you laughed a little about the level of buffoonery coming from these old hags.
