Angelina Jolie: Zaatari Refugee Camp Visit

Angelina Jolie holds hands with a little girl during a visit to the Zaatari refugee camp on Thursday (December 6) in Mafraw, Jordan.

This is the 37-year-old actress’ second trip to the region in three months to meet with the civilians that are being targeted.

“What I saw last night is a dramatic example of the plight of hundreds of thousands of Syrians who have been uprooted by the fighting and are in a desperate search for safety,” Angelina said to the UNHCR. “Civilians inside the country are being targeted. Many of those trying to flee are exposed to extreme danger right up to the border itself. I appeal to all sides in the conflict to do all they can to ensure the safe passage of these innocent civilians.”

Angelina Jolie, Ban Ki-Moon Visit Za’atri Syrian Refugee Camp In Jordan

    BY Maya Shwayder | December 07 2012

The region has experienced an influx of 200,000 more refugees flooding across the border since Jolie’s last visit in September. Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt recently donated $50,000 to Jordan to buy more tents for the refugees,

“What I saw last night is a dramatic example of the plight of hundreds of thousands of Syrians who have been uprooted by the fighting and are in a desperate search for safety,” Jolie told the press on Thursday.” Civilians inside the country are being targeted. Many of those trying to flee are exposed to extreme danger right up to the border itself. I appeal to all sides in the conflict to do all they can to ensure the safe passage of these innocent civilians.”

Jolie arrived in Amman Wednesday night and after traveling to the border and meeting with Jordanian officials, praised Jordan for its “incredible compassion”

“Jordan has welcomed the refugees even though it has placed a huge burden on the country,” she said. “The international community needs to show more solidarity and to support Jordan and the other countries in the region who continue to keep their borders open.”

The UNHCR estimates that half a million Syrian refugees have fled Syria since fighting began in March 2011, and hundreds of thousands more are unregistered. The number of registered refugees alone doubled between September and November, bringing the total number to over 200,000, already exceeding the UNHCR’s expectations for the year. They estimate by the end 2012, more than 750,000 people will have fled Syria

While visiting Za’atri, Jolie met with a few families who had just crossed the border. Several who had crossed overnight had to be hospitalized for bullet wounds. One wounded child lost his leg.

Of special concern now is the Za’atri’s camp winter preparedness levels. Temperatures are now droppping below freezing at night. UNHCR said that gas heaters are being provided, tents are being reinforced with insulation, and thermal blankets and winter clothing are being handed out, but the constant flow of new arrivals means UNCHR is already struggling to keep up.

“Winter is already here and UNHCR and its partners still lack 50 percent of the funds needed to get everyone through the next few difficult months,” Jolie said. “Despite all the good work being done so far, it’s clear here on the ground that all the resources are now stretched to the limit. This is going to be a very tough few months.”

Jolie also previously visited a Syrian refugee camp in the Hatay province in southern Turkey in June, 2011.

Jolie was appointed a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador in 2001, and in 2012 UNHCR High Commission António Guterres appointed her as a UNHCR Special Envoy, focusing on large-scale crises and mass population displacement.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon arrived at Za’atri on Friday, and visited camps in Turkey, where his spokesman said he also met with the Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A spokesperson for Ban in New York said that the Secretary General was “shocked, humbled, and deeply moved by the stories families shared with him.” Ban also made an appeal for more funds for humanitarian assistance, noting that Syrian Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan is only 50 percent funded.

  • Interesting

David Fincher on Fight Club (1999) –”We opened at the Venice film festival, and I think to say they hated it would be an understatement. They called for our hides and we split town. We thought it was funny. I’m always surprised at how seriously people take movies. It always surprises me what people get their bowels in an uproar about. It’s a movie. It was interesting to me, the critics who felt they had a moral obligation to ‘the broader audience’ to warn them. But it didn’t surprise me that some people didn’t think it was funny. It didn’t surprise me that some people thought it was morbid. It surprised me, the people who went out of their way to save other people from this experience. I thought that was kind of silly. It’s a cult movie – it’s just that it’s a big cult. Here’s a tricky thing: if you spend $15m, it’s not even a pimple on the ass of that kind of multinational media conglomerate. But if you spend $67m, they gotta release your movie. That’s a big number, they can’t write it down. I happen to know that the movie’s in the black, but there’s receipts and there’s worth. They are two different things. Because there are movies that make money and there are movies that are worth money, and sometimes the movies that are worth money make money later on. I honestly believe Fight Club is a title 20th Century Fox knows is going to make money for them in perpetuity.”

  • Agree with ya

You are so right. On JJ, AJ threads are positive and anything negative is thumbed down. So much for free speech. For any website to practice this, JJ is making big, big bucks for doing it.

  • Agree with ya

One other thing, this broad has had as much plastic done to her as JA had done. All you have to do is pull up AJ pics before she decided to get in front of a camera.

  • troll meltdown

Angie does yet another amazing thing and the trolls are in pain. Nasty old manny plants & denies YET ANOTHER fake pregnancy story and troll are in pain. Same story for eight years.

  • fatal

Go Angie-you are truly beautiful in every way-and what is this no one would read about Angie unless the Hag was mentioned-really??!! Anustain’s only claw into the A-list is still from riding Brad and Angie’s coattails in the tabloids-besides Angie’s on her second trip here in 3 month and “poor Jen” won’t even visit her dying mother only minutes away-but she invites Brad’s homophobic mom to a Hollywood wedding??/ half the people on their guest list are are gay-sooo-to spite her own mother and Brad she invites a woman whose presence will offend half of her other guests?? now that’s spite, revenge and stupidity all wrapped up in one-hope Justin has fun spending her money

  • lauren

Is the poster congrats ur a tool that carry poster.. funny how we see a new name pop up

tasmin is a nutcase. you would think he or she had a relationship with Angie and she dumped it. Because no male I have ever met spends that much time spamming and talking crap about a woman they don’t like It is just not done. Just very very weird.

  • busted

Wait so Jennifer and her rep denied a pregnancy rumor. WHY? I thought she didn’t read the tabloids. Why in the world is she denying something that is printed in a tabloid all the time. And she had to know wearing that coat the way she did would cause speculation. And her fans are still waiting..
Tampon needs to wonder why Jennifer’s movie has been pushed back to August. or October or ON Demand. LOL

#107 annon Thanks for the link with an article summing up Brad’s career so far on the last thread. That particular critic said it all, no one can ever put him in a box. That link is bookmark worthy for all Brad fans.

10 – 20 years from now, Brad will be remembered as a man who did it his way. They wanted to make him a sitcom star, he said no. They wanted him to be just a pretty face, he refused.

Let’s just say, I anticipate the Kennedy Center tribute to Brad Pitt.

  • carry

Again? why do you people care so much if she deny pregant or whatever? she has her own reason she deny things for. She is 43 and she more likely is old ( genes vary) She doesn’t want this to be said… or it could be her usual plant and deny….
She and the nose-bald more likely won’t make it imo. Regardless, you people shouldn’t care. Everytime she show up , everytime she does something YOU CARE SO MUCH. the style is costing JPs. get it. for god sakes…… remember she can do whatever she want that WORKS for her. You do what WORK for JPS shut up.

What actually funn is jared put a story last month and two week or a week old picture to deny the same 1million time said thing….. I bet huvesy ordered this. That is what is a laughing matter I just read what he wrote whatever that is not our concern or nothing…… manny talk is costing bring negativity to JPs. cease mannnnnnny of any thing.

I think the wedding rings are already done and possibly made by their trusted friend/jeweler Robert Procop who also made AJ’s “a-year-designed-by-Brad” engagement ring. And the public will only get to see them through pics only after their wedding has already taken place.
As what BP has said, their wedding would be simple & really a family affair. Probably, their guests will only include very close friends & associates. My guess, the place will be at Chateau Miraval (France) or Missouri.
I prefer for them to have a very solemn, low profile wedding. That every word in their vows are said with full of love & commitment, NOT about lavish decorations, NOT the gorgeous gowns, NOT for show, NOT for the guests, NOT for the press, NOT for the fans, BUT it’s all about the intent of lifetime partners.
Weddings are NOT celebrated for competition with others. It is NOT a contest. It is just a celebration, a ceremony. What’s more important is the reason for “wedding” which is the MARRIAGE.

Brad should be nominated for KTS, his performance is superb.
The Underestimation of the Lead Actor Brad Pitt in ‘Killing Them Softly’
Can Brad Pitt crack a Best Actor lineup this year?

    December 7, 2012

In 2007 no one saw the Best Actor nomination for Tommy Lee Jones in In the Valley of Elah (2007), it was one of those happy surprises that reminded us the acting branch really does watch the films and pay some attention. Way back in 1975 there was another such shock when James Whitmore received a Best Actor nod for his filmed stage show Give ‘em Hell Harry (1975), though it was not quite as deserving as Jones’ nomination.

With the strong reviews coming in for Brad Pitt in Killing Them Softly (2012), could he knock out one of the so-called locks and be in the category come Oscar night? He is well liked, the Academy likes him, critics like him and he has grown substantially as an actor through the years. For my money he should have been nominated for Best Actor for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) and for Babel (2006). Last year he won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Actor for Moneyball (2011) and was an Oscar nominee, and I think discounting him this year is a huge mistake.

Really the only lock at this writing is Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln (2012), and frankly I think he has got the thing sewn up. John Hawkes in The Sessions, Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables, Denzel Washington in Flight and Joaquin Phoenix in The Master could all be nominees, or one or more of them could be bumped, just like that. Remember 2000, when Michael Douglas had it all locked up for his lovely work in Wonder Boys (2000)? He wins the LA Film Critics Award, has some of the years best reviews and then is snubbed for a nomination? Any one of those four could suffer the same fate allowing Pitt to slip in.

His performance in the film is magnetic and powerful, one of the best of his career and with the right push he will be celebrating the day they announce the nominations. I am not quite ready to say with all confidence that Jackman and Washington will be among the nominees, and Phoenix might have hurt his chances with his silly comments earlier in the year. We’ll see, but I think Pitt might crash the party.
