Dan Stevens Not Returning to 'Downton Abbey' Season Four

After some recent speculation, it has been confirmed that Dan Stevens will not return to his character Matthew Crawley in the hit show Downton Abbey for its fourth season, Britain’s The Telegraph reports.

“We were always optioned for three years,” the 30-year-old actor said about the show, which will resume filming this winter. “And when that came up it was a very difficult decision. But it felt like a good time to take stock, to take a moment. From a personal point of view, I wanted a chance to do other things.”

“It is a very monopolising job. So there is a strange sense of liberation at the same time as great sadness because I am very, very fond of the show and always will be,” Dan added.

ARE YOU SAD
that Dan Stevens will not reprise his role as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey‘s fourth season???

I wish him luck and will miss his character, but this guy is not too bright to give up this gravy train, monopolizing or not, for an unknown future.

    @Manoush: wow

  • Sarai

And the actor was never heard from again….career suicide.

  • sakajawea

I really hate when an actor does that. We all know him from Downton, why didn’t he finish the show first and then he can try whathever he wants. That’s what happens when you let go something that has gave you the best the first time. Well done and good luck Dan I guess we are not going to hear about you anymore…..

  • downton

Goodbye to one of the best characters of the show. I hate you Dan Stevens.

  • gypsy

Another example of biting the hand that feeds him. Selfish. He doesn’t consider all the other actors for whom this show is important. I don’t plan to support his career.

  • Moon’

What a selfish decision. Seriously, it pisses me off !

  • Amy

    @gypsy:
Totally agree! He’s being veru unprofessional. And stop the spoilers, stupid ones!

  • A

    Get over it!
So he’s leaving? And? Oh, I forgot “boohoo”.
He doesn’t want to do the show anymore, accept it and move on.
Maybe it’s personal? Maybe he wants to try something new?God forbid he actually does things he wants to do instead of pleasing the “fans”.

Good for him, very brave and I wish him all the best.
As for you my fellow anonymous posters, you’ll just have to get over it and focus on the other characters.
Him leaving doesn’t make him ungrateful, it doesn’t make him “stupid”, or that his career is “over”.
Why are you so dead set on painting someone into a corner? He wants to grow and experience new things, god bless him! More people should be just as brave.

  • Ford

Such a selfish decision! His relationship with Mary throughout the series has always been one of the main plots that kept me gripped! And the way they killed him off last night was just so abrupt and rushed. Nice one Dan Stevens

  • skyller2002

right on gypsy. I’ve seen more established actors leave a show and never to do anything again…maybe he should go have a conversation with christopher meloni…he left the hand that fed him and he has don’t nothing since a lousy stint on true blood.

  • To the Manor Born

I think I’m more shocked by the fact that he’s 30.

  • ha ha

They should have given him the raise he prob asked for

  • Tazla

It actually could be good for the story line for him to be gone. Now Mary can find some other guy who will turn out to be a cheating dud. Matthew was just too nice and lovely. Sorry to see him go but there are other good actors out there who will be grateful for the job.

  • Ford

@Tazla: Apparently she leaves for New York in the new series, so she’s being written out too! :-(

  • Jessy

This makes me sad ’cause all the show was built on him being the new heir of Downton. And I ship him and Mary, but I can blame him. As any actors in the world he doesn’t wanna be remember just as Matthew Crawley. He’s not the first one nor the last actor who does that. And nothing to do with being selfish. He wants to have a real career or at least try to have it. He could succed or he could fail, but it’s his own decision. I respect him as I respect every actor who try to do something different and not the same things for ages.

  • sven

Women are cheating all over the place, nowadays! (Leann Rimes/Cibrian, Coco/IceT, Kristen Stewart, Suzy Favor Hamilton the Olympian & Vegas call girl, Rita Ora/Rob Kardashian, Petraeus women).

My latest book, “I Steal Wives: A serial adulterer reveals the REAL reasons more and more ‘happily married’ women are cheating” is a powerful look at this EXPLOSIVE topic of female infidelity. And the REAL reasons aren’t the typical blather you hear on talk-TV or read in the SECOND-HAND information of some psychologist’s self-help book. It’s now in the top 1% of books selling on Amazon!

The book is the FIRST BOOK EVER WRITTEN on female infidelity from the FIRST-HAND, insider experience of a serial adulterer, who cheated with the wives/girlfriends of over 25 married men (and a few women), and who also happens to be a therapist (never cheated with clients)! “I Steal Wives” is a salacious, self-deprecating, at times funny, and penetratingly insightful look into what is now the very cutting-edge of relationships.

It’s the relationship version of “How to Secure Your House, as told by a professional burglar!” This is no joke, the raw truths of “I Steal Wives” will forever change how you do relationships and understand women, especially if you are one!

Check it out now at Amazon and Barnes and Noble!! It’s selling FAST!

    nooooooo :(

  • Alaia

He probably thinks the show is terrible now. It is. Why should he be on the show? He completed his contract, just like Jessica Brown-Findlay. And look at her now, she’s in Winter’s Tale with Will Smith, Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe.

  • Rebecca

I will miss his character on the show. I hate when a show looses one of its actors like this. At least fans of the show know who to blame.

  • fggf

    he looks like draco malfoy.

  • Rose

After watching Matthew drive merrily down the road after seeing his heir then the truck coming at him and then his dead face all I could think of is… he was just George O’Mally’d (insert Grey’s Anatomy reference).

  • Audrhi

I think it’s stupid to leave at the height of the shows buzz and popularity.

  • roger

There are tons of good actors who would love a chance to be in that show, so him leaving opens up an opportunity for another. I actually found his character rather irritating, so maybe something more interesting will take its place. He’s okay but not an a- list actor. The show will go on just fine without him. Now if Maggie Smith leaves, that is a major major hit to the show. Hope she stays a while longer.

  • Yummo

What a bunch of idiots. 3 seasons is a lifetime for serious actors who want to make it on the big screen. If you wanted to quit a job after 10 boring years doing exactly the same thing, would it be justifiable for you to be hated upon for betraying your company? Morons!

  • webiv

    BOO!! You suck Matthew!!

  • Fritanga

Stevens wants what Benedict Cumberbatch is getting: a high profile in American films. Stevens is in “The Heiress” on Broadway right now with Jessica Chastain (he plays the villain) and obviously he thinks this is a stepping stone to Hollywood fame and glory. He should talk to his predecessor, Cary Elwes, though.

  • liv

@skyller2002: FYI, Chris Meloni just finished making his 6th movie after leaving SVU in addition to doing True Blood. He has a 7th starting in February (if there isn’t one between now and then). I wouldn’t exactly call that doing nothing! They all come out in 2013: Man of Steel, 42, Awful Nice, Small Time, They Came Together, WhiteBird in a Blizzard and Wet Hot American Summer II.

  • skyller2002

@liv i can see the number one hits now thanks for letting me know. lmao.

  • mano

Dan Steve is a very selfish person. How can he pull out from the show at such a key moment, He has spoil t it for everyone, the fans his fellow actors in the series. You must never commit to something that you cannot follow through. I used to really admire his character, as a well balanced person with principles, I guess the character in the play doesn’t translate into who he is as a person, I am extremely disappointed with his decision.

  • mimi

    Damned spoilers !!!

  • MrPenguin

I can’t imagine the show being such a success after Matthew Crawley’s death. The tension/love/conflict between Matthew & Mary is what makes the show. All other story lines are subsidiaries to the Matthew & Mary story line. Very sad to see him go.

  • Bill Brandt

    @LA Native:
I would have to agree. Probably not the greatest of career choices

  • Abby

Although I love Dan Stevens I am more fond of his character and do not see why the character had to die. Another actor could have played the part. Many of us abandoned soap operas through the years when writers failed to appreciate they didn’t have to kill a compelling story line – very few actors are totally irreplaceable.

  • Barb

I am shocked and saddened by Matthew’s death. How sad is this? I’d heard that another character would die in Season 3, but I had no idea that it would be Matthew. I was unaware that Dan wanted out of the series at the end of Season 3. I will miss him terribly…he was such a kind person, a great actor in my view…but he is entitled to his choices. I am sure he found leaving extremely difficult, but I know that he must have had his reasons. There will be further plots and story lines and the series will continue on in all its glory. We will all miss Sybil and Matthew and the wonderful acting they brought to their respective roles. I wish them both the very best of luck in their future endeavors. That having been said, I do have to admit that they both were my favorites on the show.

  • Barb

Very sad Dan’s leaving. He will be missed. Great actor. Good luck in future endeavors.

  • http://donblanton.com D.B.

Dan is making the same mistake as some before him. Once they get a taste of success they think that it is time to move on. What they don’t realize is that they need to stay awhile longer in the show that brought them success an then move on. However, they get to big for their britches and it goes to their head that they are “great” and that they can land other roles as good. The grass is always greener on the other side, and most likely Dan will find out the hard way. I wish him much success, but in my opinion he should not have left. Reminds me of Chevy Chase leaving Saturday night live, with only a modicom of success.
