OlderHugh Jackman: 'Les Miserables' Director Wanted People to Think I Was Sick!

The 44-year-old actor recently chatted with Deadline about his role in Les Miserables being one of his toughest roles he has taken.

“There is not an element that really wasn’t the toughest. One of the reasons I did the Broadway show was to make sure I was vocally fit to not only sing it, but sing it all day long, wake up the next day, and have another 12 hours of it. I put on 29 pounds from beginning to end,” Hugh shared.
Hugh added, “Tom [Hooper] told me, ‘I want people to worry, I want your friends to think you’re sick.’ The physicality, the emotional (aspect) acting-wise, was tough.”

@Bianca: Jackman as Valjean got a Golden Globe nomination and 2 SAG Awards nominations, a type of awards not assigned to bad artists, of course. Insiders and professional critics have predicted for him an Oscar nomination too and likely a win.
He’s a professional deep baritone, one of the most talented performers around, equally at home on film and on stage and won two Tony Awards. In a motion-picture adaptation like this Les Mis version, it’s important to hear the emotion and acting they put in to their singing, which is something that can transform a song from that of a recording artist, to that of an actor. Tom Hooper did not want mannerisms and theatrical virtuosity for his movie, he asked for realism, not a musical theatre type performance. Before seeing a movie and give negative opinions regardless, it would be better take a minimum of background information. In Les Miserables Jackman used intentionally a ‘sing-talking’ technique, Rex Harrison won an Oscar in 1964 using the same singing style in My Fair Lady. Sorry Bianca…
