Neil Patrick Harris' Super Bowl Promo Draws Controversy

Neil Patrick Harris‘ promo for the upcoming Super Bowl for CBS has drawn controversy from conservative groups who slam the ad for “mocking Christianity”.

The ad features the 39-year-old actor wearing eye black on his cheeks with the game date – Feb. 3, 2013 – written in white over the black. This is similar to the image featuring Super Bowl halftime show performer Beyonce.

“CBS, the television network airing the big game this year, is now using an outspoken homosexual actor to mimic Tim Tebow’s style of trumpeting messages in eyeblack on his face,” a conservative writer wrote (via Huffington Post), which sparked discussion around the web.

I like Neil, but he’s getting rather annoying lately. But I agree, what controversy?

# 3

is it contreversial cause he’s gay ?

# 4

Oh my god people are so sensitive nowadays! He isn’t making fun of anyone.. Did I miss the memo where eye-black only for religious football players now? Calm yo tits conservatives, not everyone is out to get you!!

# 5

So… gay people aren’t allowed to promote football? Sounds fair. What else are they not allowed to talk about? Maybe the conservatives should just go ahead and make a list. So “outspoken gay people” don’t offend anyone.

Harris is getting super annoying with the gay thing. You”re gay, you came out, we all don’t care if you are. Now, just stop it already. Jesus.

I don’t get it, where is the controversy?

# 8

Yeah, hate to break it to you, conservative America, but Tim Tebow didn’t come up with the idea of writing on your goddamn face. JESUS, DO THESE PEOPLE HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO WITH THEIR TIME?! Congrats, this is officially the dumbest “controversy” I’ve seen in a lonnnnnnng time.

# 9

I can understand what their trying to convey, but the truth is Beyonce did it. Why such a big controversy after a gay man does it. Hypocrisy or is that just the way America thinks?…

Haters Suck! @ 01/07/2013 at 4:03 pm

I’m a Christian and I don’t see what I’m supposed to be offended about. Hummm?

lol christianity

Oh please, could they stop already?!
I’d rather see NPH, than some girlfriend beatin’, gun toting, drunk driving, car wrecking NFL player.

OM he is more than just a homosexual omg I hate this world

people’s stupidity surprises me everyday.

What a crock. Christians are a bunch of hateful and paranoid freaks.

so the big deal is… he is homosexual??? oh wow! that sounds reasonable! what a shame…
nowadays, everybody is so… so… i can’t find a word wich i can express how stupid are this controversies…

@nisles: Well I’m Catholic and went to Catholic schools all my life and no one was ever anti-gay or self-righteous. I’m in my 20′s so it’s definitely a different generation but these people who make hateful claims are religious fanatics – not fair to condemn all Christians.

This is really a stretch. Do people have nothing better to do but look to be “offended.” What a joke.

I’m siting here with a wtf? look on my face. What did he do wrong? Is it because he’s gay? If so those people are stupid and ignorant to think that gays don’t enjoy sports such as football and don’t have the right to enjoy it.
I miss when every little thing wasn’t an issue and people weren’t looking for things to get angry about.

Belize Belize @ 01/07/2013 at 7:53 pm

LOL. lets find a problem that doesn’t exist to complain about. great strategy.

What in the world? Beyonce does it and the conservatives breathe; Neil does it and they get all huffy. Over what exactly? Black lines under the eyes in nothing new to football and letter and words in said black lines is nothing new to football. Tim Tebow didn’t trademark this look. Do you see the dingbats who paint their faces will all colors of the rainbow and filling in those colors with numbers and letters?

If you want to get all huffy about religion, why don’t you said conservatives get huffy at the idea that Tim Tebow is throwing around a pigskin ball even though the Bible forbids the touching of animal skin. Or how about the fact that he plays on both Saturdays and Sundays, holy Sabbath days when people should be at rest.

Get huffy about that.

Blah, blah, blah…conservative groups are always going to find something to be butt hurt about since not everybody looks, feels, believes, acts just like them.
Sit down and shut up…you’re only a small section of a very large global community and you’re seriously making a$$es of yourselves.

People just need to get it in their heads that gay people are as much equal as any straight person

QueenOfTrashin @ 01/09/2013 at 4:30 pm

Little Timmy Tebow is not the only one to use that method to spread a message. I had a phone call from a friend today about the extreme posts from our ‘Christian’ friends that are showing up on our Facebook pages and are embarassing the s*h*i*t out of us. Hey, ‘Christians’, get an effing grip on yourselves. Not all of us want your extremist views and bizarre obsessions spewed at us all day, every day. I believe my way. You believe your way. And leave my Facebook page out of it. Please!!!!

This issue really doesn’t even deserve to be talked about. It just makes us all look stupid. Neil meant no harm. How could anyone think otherwise?
