Lady Gaga to Kelly Osbourne: Stop Breeding Negativity!

Lady Gaga has written an open letter to Kelly Osbourne after the fashion correspondent opened up about being cyber bullied by the pop star’s fans.

The 28-year-old Fashion Police host said that after she acknowledged Gaga‘s weight gain and questioned a possible pregnancy, the singer’s fans lashed out at her.

Gaga took to her blog to ask Kelly to examine her own actions.

“Your work on E! with the Fashion Police is rooted in criticism, judgment, and rating people’s beauty against one another. “Appearance” is the most used reason for bullying in the world. Your show breeds negativity, and over the years has even become comedic in nature,” Gaga wrote.

Open Letter to Kelly Osbourne

Dear Kelly,

While I wish you had reached out to me personally, as the head of the Born This Way foundation with my mother Cynthia we would like to respond. Everyday, through my music and public voice I choose to be positive and work towards a kinder and braver world with our community of followers. I encourage them to ignore criticism, stand up to bullies, know their own value and see that we are all the same and no one person is worth more than another. I know I’m perceived as a wild child, but in reality I am woman that deeply cares for humanity. I have empathy for you Kelly, but I feel it culturally important to note that you have chosen a less compassionate path. Your work on E! with the Fashion Police is rooted in criticism, judgment, and rating people’s beauty against one another. “Appearance” is the most used reason for bullying in the world. Your show breeds negativity, and over the years has even become comedic in nature. It glorifies you and Joan Rivers pointing in the camera, laughing, and making jokes about artists and celebrities as if we are zoo animals. What about your body revolution? It used to make me truly sad when I would hear people talk about your weight when you were younger, as I was bullied too. To see you blossoming into a beautiful slender woman who makes fun of others for a living is astounding. Why not help others? Why not defend others who are bullied for their image and share your story? I am pointing this out not to take a crack at your character, as we’ve met before and you’re lovely. However, I urge you to take responsibility and accountability for the example that you are setting for young people. They look up to you because you are famous, and if you treat others that way on TV, many adolescents at home on twitter assume your actions are acceptable: well if she does it, why can’t I? I cannot control my fans, and I discourage them from any negativity and violence, because that is wrong and hurtful — and I do feel baldy that your feelings were hurt. However, we can all do our part in the media to set a standard of respect, compassion, and love. I wish for you to be treated with the kindness and respect that everyone deserves. While some of my fans have learning to do, most of them share the same values as I, and it’s what bonds us together. And that bond is strong.

Gaga and Cynthia

PS. And to any media or celebrities that happen to find this letter in their path, I hope you, too, consider the power of your voices. Lets work together and make 2013 a year of unity.

    I agree with GaGa.
kelly dishing out what she cant take

  • BEAN

Kelly is a MASSIVE hypocrite. Remember how hideous she used to be and how she was always attacked for it, now a little bit of make up and she thinks she has the right to openly criticise peoples appearance. The fashion police is a joke. They are all pathetic. Get a real job, bunch of losers. Gaga is 100% right.

  • Carol

She makes a very good point. The show is not about fashion it is about body shaming and judgement.

  • amika

Kelly Osbourne is a joke. you’d think that someone who’s struggled with weight issues all of her life would be a bit more sympathetic towards others that are fluctuating in weight (both gaga and christina aguilera) but she doesn’t. stop trying to victimize yourself because your hands definitely aren’t clean.

  • Lauren

Boom! Hahah. Buuuuurrrrnnnn. I’m not even a Gaga fan but that letter is the sh*t.

  • Anne

My respect goes to Gaga. She is a living example of the adage “looks can be deceiving.” On the outside, she seems like this wild child who does what she wants and gets what she wants but deep down inside she really has a good-heart.

  • Jo

    GO GAGA !

  • Sofia

I used to think that Lady Gaga was completely crazy and weird in many ways but after reading her letter I realized that she is extremely smart and reminds me a little bit of Angelina Jolie.
I hope she continue the same and that her fans can follow those great words with actions.
I wish the best to Kelly too I hope she can change for better.

  • Meela

I’m not a Gaga fan, but I sure as hell respect her… much much much more than I do or would ever respect Kelly Osbourne. I don’t know why Kelly and the Fashion Police asshats feel entitled to judge and mock others’ appearances, especially since she had body issues for so long. I’m so glad that Lady Gaga handed Kelly’s ass to her.

  • Clementine

That Show not about Fashion anymore. How they makes fun of Weight Gain and Weight Lost makes me Sick..The way they all laugh at Stars reminds me of High School or going to the Mall or any Amusement Park. Its Bullying and Kelly and Joan are the Ring Leaders.

  • effy

I’m not a Kelly fan or a Gaga hater but i disagree with Gaga. I always think that Kelly is actually way too nice to be on the show, she’s always defending people and trying to find a good way to prove her point… And although i don’t watch every episode, i like to watch it sometimes, and i NEVER saw them saying someone is fat or ugly or something like that, they are always saying the shape of the dress didn’t work for their body and by doing that actully giving good tips, or that the make up or hairdo wasn’t a good choice with the whole look, etc. Of course Joan goes too far a lot of time but it’s not the main intention of the show, as Gaga made it look.
And please “but in reality I am woman that deeply cares for humanity” Gaga stop trying so hard!!!
    That’s just my opinion…

  • LooseLipz

Not a GaGa fan, but bitch is right. Kelly has been fat her whole life until she undoubtedly got gastro bi-pass surgery like her mom. Spoiled little short chubby twit. Fashion Police is a joke. Joan, the poster woman for bad plastic disaster surgery. Giuliana Anorexic, and Kelly ‘I’m a fatty no matter how thin I get ” Osbourne, all poking fun at others. Shame on them!

  • hiub

why is she taking her anger & frustration out on specifically Kelly? There are SO MANY celebrities, media, magazines, bloggers who say the same too. That is bully right there as well.

  • Marie

I agree with Gaga, Kelly if you live in a glass house don’t throw stones.

  • Lona

Gaga should stop talking like she’s the one who will teach the world how to behave and what to do in order to make this world better. You are not a perfect human being, and you do not set a perfect role model for young people you’re talking about, so don’t give people advices like you know it all. You claim to ask people not to listen to what others tell them to do, then you write an open letter and try to dictate on someone what they should do.
Kelly Osbourne is a very kind woman, even on “Fashion Police”. People will always criticise your look, your music, your movies, and any material an artist presents to the public. It is one of the media’s responsibilities to criticise in order to push stars to do better. If you don’t understand this then you should not be a star.
And if you’re against the comedic nature of “Fashion Police” then you don’t understand what comedy is. Are not all the late night shows on TV based on making fun of social, political, or artistic related subjects? Are you against all these? This is not bullying, this is entertainment. You are stupid if you don’t get the difference, but young people are not stupid and they know what’s the logic behind these shows. They will not go around and justify bullying, so just… STOP.

  • Genevieve

Like most people on here, going to have to agree with Gaga on this one. How can a person who makes fun of other people for a living sleep at night?
p.s. if it matters, not a fan of either of theirs….just agreeing with the Gaga this time

  • Jenny

I agree with Gaga.. But I dont think Kelly is the most guilty in this- more people should get letters like this.

  • Jasmine

Can gaga shut up already, make music but stop pretending your the God allmighty and our saviour, she should have thought about how criticicism hurts when she partnered up with Perez Hilton who spawned her promo like a puppet on a string and trashing every artist who came in gaga’s way, come on, she loved it and said nothing against Perez’s bullying, then she lashed out at Madonna with slurs when she worried madonna would get in her way of the throne, I find her attempt at wanting to be a councelor to her fans laughable when she seems to have problems of her own, a big ego being one of them! Kelly has a reality show where they critique fashion in a humorous way, yes, sometimes Joan says bigoted things but not once have I ever heard Kelly out of line and I feel that this attempt of gaga’s is bullying kelly, not the other way around!

  • wahh

agree with Gaga. those shows are so negative I cant even watch. and Joan Rivers career has been made by making fun of people. well would she look in the mirror???! yikes.

  • Dan

Gaga has missed the point, her “monsters” are telling Kelly to kill herself because she is fat. Her fans are horrible disgusting creatures and she should actully be writing an open letter to them to tell they to stop bullying everyone. It supposedly goes against everything she stands for yet I’ve never heard her call them on it?
Their treatment to Madonna when MDNA came out was also awful, death threats etc. No one elses fans seem to be so threatened by other people. I don’t know why she attracts the lowest people as her fans.

  • Sammy

Bahahah Kelly got TOLD!!! Why Kelly is even part of the fashion police i’ll never understand…

  • marlanni

Not a fan of Gaga’s but good for her.

  • http://Comcast Bridget

I quit watching Fashion Police when they were knocking Nicole Kidman, Nicole looked beautiful and Kelly and Joan couldn’t say a nice thing about her. They evidently do not have mirrors. The other gal on that show was at least decent when talking about Nicole.

  • buhbuh

    ‘tardfight ‘tardfight

  • Lana

I have to agree with Gaga on this one..

  • Annie

Kelly can be a hypocrite but so can Gaga – a person whose music career would be nothing without outer image bashing Kelly for talking about appearances.

  • African Girl

I’m very very impressed by this letter. She makes valid points.

  • Jacki

This is fascinating. Gaga managed to take something that was about the appalling behaviour of her fans and turn it into an attack on Kelly. Far from encouraging her fans to stop bullying others (which they are FAMOUS FOR) Gaga has further encouraged them to attack others – specifically Kelly in this case. Take a look at the comments on this article. Hardly anybody is looking at the original reason this letter arose – a request for Gaga to stop her fans bullying others. Instead they join Gaga in attacking Kelly and have absolutely no awareness that they are, once again, bullying Kelly. Incredible and a little scarey.

  • siiiiiiii

    1) gaga has a serious god complex and should definitely invest in a psychiatrist and/or medication. or just retire. (preferably the latter.) she’s been over-exposed for years and i can’t wait for her to just goooo awaaayyyy alreadyyyyyy.

    2) gaga’s a horrible writer and should stick to speaking; at least through editing, she can sometimes come-off as semi-intelligent.

    3) i can’t stand gaga fans, and i can’t believe they can even tolerate each other.

    4) she, along with her PR people, loves this sh*t, as it continues to paint her as some sort of saint among celebrities; instead of scolding kelly, she should send her some champagne and a thank you note.

    5) this is not newsworthy, and i can’t believe i wasted my time with this comment. damn. fell for it AGAIN.

  • Susan

I agree with Lady Gaga on this one. Kelly is a hypocrite and needs to think before she opens her mouth. Interested to see how Kelly responds to this. I’m sure her PR team will find a way to place the blame on everyone else but her.

  • Jojo

Gaga ain’t perfect, but for sure she’s trying to create a better world and point things that most of us wouldn’t. You don’t have to agree with her all the time, but she is a genuine person, give her that.

  • Karolina

Honestly, Lady Gaga has a point. plus Kelly Osbourne and the rest of the fashion police people are a bunch of bullies.

  • Jojo

It’s sad that you had to waste 10 minutes of your life writing this! Irrelevant.

  • jen

gaga is right, Kelly needs to keep her mouth shut.

  • ugh

OMG lolllll more celebrities crying that they’re getting criticized? so pathetic. And kelly is pretty respectful actually. And fashion police is negative? i dont see anyone writing an open letter to the vampire diaries that shows men abusing women. she needs to sit down. i dont find anything amazing about gaga who posted pictures of herself high off her as(s a few months ago (butttttttt now of course she’s concerned for the youth of america?) hahahah idiot

  • siiiiiiii

actually, it was more like two (i know, i type SO. FAST. :-O)

  • Eddy

Thinking about it, it’s kind of hypocritical for Kelly to work in Fashion Police, and judge people based on their beauty. I hope she hasn’t forgotten about what happened to her in her teenage years. She should of learned and done a positive thing about it and not judge people based on their looks for a living. I am not being negative towards anyone, just expressing my opining of why Kelly shouldn’t be “booty hurt.” Also, Sharon made this a million times worse than it was. Gaga just publicly reached out to Kelly in a nice way, Sharon decided to call Gaga a bully and a attention seeker. And by the way Sharon, her fur isn’t real. Get your information right next time.

  • Eddy

I agree a lot of Gaga fans made a wrong decision by sending these negative messages to Kelly. As a Gaga fan, I know how to accept others for who they are. Not all of the fans are like those who sent messages to Kelly. Sharon made this worse by calling Gaga things. Even if Gaga decided to make this public, it could of been handled better by Sharon.

  • Eddy

@Dan: Not all of her fans are like that. I am a very big Gaga fan and I am not like this. The problem here is that everyone thinks every fan is like that. No. Those “fans” who lashed out at Kelly aren’t really good fans because they haven’t shown what Gaga taught us all, to love each other and accept each other’s differences.

  • Taylor

I think Gaga just convinced me never to watch Fashion Police again. She makes so many good points.

  • Michael

Gaga just looking for more attention. Could of just handled this privately. I guess when your tour isn’t sold out yet and you have to use Madonna’s stage in Mexico because it was cheaper to use that than sending your own stage down because the show wasn’t close to capacity you just need to always try and gather some attention.

  • raison

Oh lol. Is there anyone on earth more full of herself than Gaga?

  • Rachel

if anyone actually watches fashion police they would know that kelly is the least mean of all of them- she judges solely based on FASHION not weight or appearances. they are different. its just like judging other peoples musics- fashion=art and expression. she NEVER makes fun of people. if you guys actually watched fashion police, you would know that.

  • porquenon

Madamoiselle Gaga should stop hanging out with that pedophile Terry Richardson and put down the white powder she shares with Lohan and stop stealing from Madonna and Grace Jones and get an effing life.

  • ChristieK

This is ridiculous, the fashion police is just a fun show surely not to be taken sooo seriously. It is a discussion about celebrity fashions. No one truly gets hurt, it should all be taken with a grain of salt.. Lady Gaga should know there are bigger things in life to be concerned about then what Kelly has to say. I think this letter was uncalled for and basically pinning one person (Kelly) as a target to blame for bullying. So great job Gaga! Now you just got ALL of your fans to hate Kelly and send her hate mail, now look who’s the one who is breeding negativity. Of all people Lady Gaga should know this is how bullying and hate get started, by a famous person pointing there finger at someone because like she said “all the young people assume your actions are acceptable: well if she does it, why can’t I?

  • amika

@hiub: kelly called her out on it first. she was just recently interviewed and she was saying how she still gets a lot of crap for being fat and lady gaga’s fans are the worst and that lady gaga has a “responsibility to stop” her fans from bullying her. she didn’t randomly pick kelly to send a letter to it was warranted.

  • Kerry

Kelly is the most respectful of the FP cast and has openly praised stars like Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy for wearing appropriate fitting clothes. Gaga uses fashion to express herself and spark controversy. If she wears very provocative clothing (or as little as possible) she needs to accept the praise and the criticism. Her weight gain was more apparent because she has shown so much of her body in the past. I think this is more of how unhappy Gaga was with her body change than anything else. She wasn’t complaining she was being objectified when she wore next to nothing on stage and in videos. If she were confident in herself then this would be a nonissue. She has invited bullying of Kelly through her words. And, with her clout and 32 million followers, can someone with that much power really be bullied? No, she’s the bully.

  • ManuOhMyGod

@Jacki: Clearly, you haven’t read half the things she said :/

  • greenieweenie

Are you really weighing in on a debate about criticizing appearances by criticizing appearance? How…novel.

Gaga has fair points, but celebrities are often so far up their own asses that I can’t say they don’t deserve some of the criticism that comes to them on the red carpet. I NEVER am cool with criticizing genetic traits or slutshaming, but bad plastic surgery, try-harding or taking yourself way too seriously…that should be put in perspective. Celebrity brings a pretty fat cake along with it; no harm in once in a while being forced to eat it, too. I see red carpet assessment more akin to job evaluation than straight up negativity. Depends on the attitude of the person doing it, I guess.

  • Hasan

Agreed with Gaga, in the letter at the end she says lets not use this letter for negativity yet again media uses it for their own sake. If we want to make this world a better place we should make sacrifices. We will get better rewards in future.
