Dodge Ram's Farmers: Super Bowl Commercial 2013 (Video)

One of the longer commercials we saw during the 2013 Super Bowl on Sunday (February 3) was the two-minute spot for the Dodge Ram Trucks.

“And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, “I need a caretaker.” So God made a farmer,” the late conservative radio broadcaster Paul Harvey says in the clip.

“God said, “I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the field, milk cows again, eat supper, then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board.” So God made a farmer,” the narrator continued.

God said, “I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt and watch it die, then dry his eyes and say,’Maybe next year,’ I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from an ash tree, shoe a horse with hunk of car tire, who can make a harness out hay wire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. Who, during planting time and harvest season will finish his 40-hour week by Tuesday noon and then, paining from tractor back, put in another 72 hours.” So God made the farmer.

God said, “I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to yean lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-comb pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the leg of a meadowlark.”

It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and brake, and disk, and plow, and plant, and tie the fleece and strain the milk, . Somebody who’d bale a family together with the soft, strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh, and then sigh and then reply with smiling eyes when his son says that he wants to spend his life doing what Dad does. “So God made a farmer.”

I am DYING to know how much they paid for 2 full minutes on the super bowl. I thought the message was great, but it got boring.

  • Kay

That wasn’t just a narrator. That was Paul Harvey. Big difference.

  • liz

I really thought it was some trailer for some horror film were zombies come and attack. Really nice idea, got my attention though.

  • Charlie

    My favorite ad, by far

  • ico

    I loved it.

For lack of words.. It made me proud. Really did.

  • John Walker

This was by far the best commercial I have seen in ages. Paul Harvey’s commentary with powerful images of Americana. Simple, Pure, Art! It is something everyone in media aspires to achieve. Form meets function in concept and execution. Magnificent!

  • GirlNamedJake

“The Narrator”? Seriously? Do a little bit of homework on Paul Harvey before you reduce him to “the narrator”, please. It just makes you look bad, or very young.

  • Pam

Loved the God made a farmer commercial.

  • Cane94

    Excellent theme and moving tribute

  • Deb

    Best Ad by Far!

  • PreppyJennie

    I loved it !!

  • MO Girl

I found it pandering, patronizing. And we’re farmers. Also, it’s a youtube ripoff.

  • Steve

Chemistry can make lesser teams great, just as it did with the Dodge commercial. Using Harvey was huge, and they win the night!

  • D. Ann

Fantastic, and Inormally hate commercials. REAL FAMILY farmers deserve our respect and thanks. BUY FROM YOUR LOCAL FARMER!!!

  • Jay

I was STUNNED, I was born and grew up on a Farm……. I didn’t think anyone else knew,,, A winner HANDS DOWN !!! WOW…..

  • John

Please get your facts straight before posting. Not to take away from the great idea behind the commercial, this was NOT a Dodge commercial — it was a RAM Trucks commercial. RAM Trucks has been its own brand for 3 years and the Dodge brand has no part in the creation of these trucks anymore. So, to set it straight, Dodge Ram Trucks don’t exist anymore.

  • cc

Not all Farmers are Caucasian!! Dodge forgot about diversity.

  • Bob K

This is what this country needs. More great commercials about American Pride and American produces. I hope it gets people thinking about buying American.

  • cc

    ok RAM forgot about diversity

  • Jeff Henshaw

Your Welcome. From Grandpa to Dad to Me we are farmers

  • Pspaughtamus

In addition to the laughable way you reduced the venerable Paul Harvey to “the narrator”, you made at least one error in transcription. Didn’t you bother to actually watch the commercial? His name was at the very beginning.

As for the commercial, I liked it, but I come from a long line of farmers.

  • am

@cc: I think you need to watch the commercial again.

  • law

My favorite commercial of the night … it got my attention thats for sure so a BIG thank you to all the farmers out there …The truck just a prop in a very heart felt message if you ask me …well done Dodge

  • http://@barryturney Barry T

If this commercial got boring… you have no ties to farming in this country… and you are NOT an American!!!!!!!!!! BEST SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • D&JB

What is one thing that the world cannot live without?? FOOD…thanks to the American Farmer. Kudos to Ram to give credit to the Farmer. This is by far the best commercial of the night…maybe the whole year!! Let’s not forget the farmer and who created him/her!! God bless America…and it’s farmers!! Think about where your next bite comes from and also who to thank…God and the American farmer.

  • Tina

Best commercial I have seen in ages. Go to church regularly and this is one great commercial. Very touching.

  • yvonne barnes

    @law: BEST COMMERCIAL EVER YVONNE

  • http:caseybrownmyers.blogspot.com Casey

I can just hear the liberal atheist groups tomorrow calling for an apology from Dodge. They will call for boycotts saying that Dodge is discriminating against non-believers. Liberals are so predictable.

  • http://@hbeeinc Paul Day

God said, “I need someone to kill the bison, rape the land, demand the government take care of them and then elect people who hate the government. So God created the farmer

  • oldjd325

CC – You watched the commercial and all you got from it was lack of diversity? Are you upset that God was mentioned so many times? I hope and pray that we start to see a lot more of that type of ad that speaks directly to the hearts of most of us. It appears that it is way over the heads of the libtards like cc…

  • Tomg

There was at least one black farmer shown. For the idiot that said not all farmers are Caucasian.

  • -T

@cc: Funny, I saw a black man, guess you weren’t watchin or are color blind.

  • http://@hbeeinc Paul Day

    @Tina:

So you take money from the government in farm subsidies while screaming about people on the gov’t dole?

    God bless you!

  • http://PatricknSoCal ProudDodgeOwner

Awesome, by far the best ad the 2013 Super Bowl had to offer. Wonder why Dodge waited for the Super Bowl to share? You can bet it will be talked about long after.

  • http://@hbeeinc Paul Day

    @Kay: Yes. Paul Harvey’s dead.

  • brad willman

Hello there was diversity in the commercial if you watched it

  • http://@hbeeinc Paul Day

@GirlNamedJake: Do a little bit of research on how it was the gov’t that saved farmers asses after the raped the land and brought on the dust bowl.

Then go vote for the GOP to end farm subsidies.

  • Dchurch

    Best commercial by far

  • kathy

This took me back many years to when I first heard Paul Harvey do this piece I t made me cry then and it made me cry tronight .I didn’t watch the superbowl my daughter was at a superbowl party and came through the door saying get on u tube the best story from Paul Harvey was narrating the commercial… some of the guys made comments but they don’t know Paul Harvey like I do. I am so proud to have grown up a Paul Harvey girl and I am glad my daughter is one too, Dodge went up high in my esteem.

  • http:caseybrownmyers.blogspot.com Casey

    Libtards are so bitter!

  • http://@hbeeinc Paul Day

@Casey: People have the right to believe in a sky daddy. That’s called faith.

What you DON’T have the right to do is re-write history. Fake xtians like support “moral” folk like Sen. David Vitter who had whores dress him up in diapers, serial adulterers like Gingrich and impotent loudmouths like LImbaugh who doesn’t even bother going to church.

And then you complain about the lack of God in America.

    Good luck with that, Sparky.

  • http://@hbeeinc Paul Day

@Casey: Not as bitter as xtians who think Ayn Rand wrote the bible.

Gov’t funds for farmers not to farm = good
Gov’t fund to feed babies you’ve forced women to have = bad.

  • Bonnie

wonderfull. proud farmers daughter.god bless JIGGS and all farmers

  • http://@hbeeinc Paul Day

@Tomg: Golly! One black farmer in a two minute commercial? I’m…I’m chastened.

  • http:caseybrownmyers.blogspot.com Casey

@Paul Day: I rest my case!

  • Steve

@Casey: Casey, How is it that you are the one bringing up politics and religion to decry someone with different politics bringing up religion? (Not that they’ve actually done so.) Can you say “hypocrite?”

BTW – I’m an atheist. I’m socially liberal. I’m also a farmer and I liked this commercial very much. I was always a fan of Paul Harvey, even though our beliefs were different.

  • slinde

    @MO Girl:
My grandchildren are 5th generation farmers….my family has been caring for this ranch since 1860. I thought the ad was a wonderful tribute to those who have chosen to be stewards of the land. I also find it very tedious that the race card be brought up.

  • mason

    @cc:

yeah, dont pick a fight with out all the facts. so you probably aren’t a farmer either. just looking to get some attention with no point to anything.

  • Rachel McKinney

Hands down the best commerical coming from a granddaughter, daughter, and sister of farmers. AND THAT IS THE REST OF THE STORY! Yes, I grew up listening to Paul Harvey on the radio! Brought tears to my eyes.

  • Chris Rakin

This is by far the best commercial. I am a farmer’s daughter and I can tell you, it takes a strong, disciplined man to be a successful farmer. And a gentle one, too, to raise his own family with his wife. When I saw this commercial, I thought of my great grandfather, my dad, my brother, and my nephew who all farm or did farm, plus all of the farmers in this big United States.. I feel that I have been lucky to have been raised on a farm and know what it takes to work hard and see what that hard work can result in. And to know what it means to live in the country, play hard , use your own imagination, and make your own fun. There is no better life for a family.
