Austin Butler Interview: On Set of 'The Carrie Diaries'!

Check out our new interview with Austin Butler from one of our favorite new shows The Carrie Diaries!

The 21-year-old actor plays bad boy Sebastian Kydd in this Sex and the City prequel. And while Sebastian may have a checkered past when it comes to girls, his dreamy good looks and heart of gold make him a weak spot for our titular character Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb).

JJ recently sat down with Austin on set of the show to get the scoop on his character’s style, Sebastian and Carrie’s relationship, and of course, what we can expect in coming episodes!

Austin Butler- Interview

JJ: What are some of the similarities and differences between you and Sebastian?

Austin Butler: Well, we look a lot a like. That’s the worst jokes [laughs]. Our lives are very different. He comes from not a very loving family, but a very wealthy family who has sort of neglected him. I come from a very, loving supporting family, not very wealthy at all, very different in that way. I think that’s shaped him into this guy who puts up walls and protects himself from that pain of not being loved. I don’t have that so much. I don’t have many walls that I put up. So it’s kind of learning to do that for him.

JJ: Do you get a lot of comparisons to Mr. Big?

AB: Candace [Bushnell] has said in our first table read that I had reminded her of him. At least in that read. But I think the characters are somewhat similar in the way that it’s great one second and then all of a sudden, he’s put up some sort of wall and he’s distant. I think that’s a definite similarity.

JJ: What’s it like working with stylist Eric Daman?

AB: He’s awesome. He’s the most fashionable person I know. You’ll go in there and he’ll have some ascot on or something. He’s amazing. And he’s dressed me in a way that I’m happy with for the most part. I get to wear a leather jacket, which is cool.

JJ: Have you learned any style secrets from him?

AB: I’ll come in and talk to him. I’m from California, so I’m not used to this cold weather and so he has pointed me in the right direction as far as which big coats to get. So that’s helped a lot.

JJ: Where would you like Sebastian and Carrie’s relationship to go?

AB: Right now, it’s at the point that it can get so great, they’re relationship can go so well, but then there’s so much vulnerability that comes with that so he puts up protection devices. And then it causes the relationship to not go so well. And it goes back and forth, but it doesn’t change how much they feel for each other. So it’s learning to overcome those things.

It’s nice the CW hired a mentally disabled actor to be on one of their show.

  • Gilmore

    @Hunger Games Fan:

Wow, I don’t like the guy much either but maybe you should find a better punchline that doesn’t involve disrespecting disable people.

Nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all. Am happy that he’s doing great in his role.

    he seems like a jerk

    to whoever types the interview:

they’re relationship can go so well”

should be “their relationship go so well”

  • Nicole

Wow! Where in the world are you guys getting the mentally disabled jerk thing? He seems very well spoken and actually like a very nice guy, in every interview I’ve ever read!! It sounds like you have made up your minds based on something other than reality! In time, I think you will really like him if you give him a chance and actually listen to what he’s saying.

I was determined not to like him for his pap attention hogging behaviour with Vanessa Hudgens. But having actually watched The Carrie Diaries I can say he has a great on screen presence and good chemistry with AnnaSophia Robb.
