Julianne Moore & Alexander Skarsgard: 'What Maisie Knew' Trailer!

Check out the official trailer for Julianne Moore and Alexander Skarsgard‘s upcoming film What Maisie Knew!

Here’s the film’s synopsis: 7-year-old Maisie (Onata Aprile) is caught in the middle of a custody battle between her mother Suzanna (Moore), an aging rock star, and her father, Beale (Steve Coogan), a major art dealer. In a race to win the court’s advantage, Beale marries Maisie’s nanny Margo (Joanna Vanderham), prompting Suzanna to marry friend and local bartender, Lincoln (Skarsgard). Both forced into a battle they didn’t want, Margo and Lincoln may turn out to be the family Maisie really needs.

What Maisie Knew is expected to be released in theaters later this year.

i love skarsgard but this looks like straight to dvd or lifetime film

  • Ginger

This movie looks cute and I can’t wait to see it. I’ll probably cry too and I’m OK with that.

  • sam

@silly: That’s a stupid comment considering it got rave reviews at TIFF. Idiot.

  • Lilla

    May 3rd! I cannot wait!

  • W

I can’t wait to see this movie. Hot, sensitive Alex is going to make women swoon and their ovaries combust. Men better pay attention. This is the movie to take your GF to if you want to get laid.

  • Samantha Patterson

I agree it may not get a lot of mainstream attention, but I think this is Alex’s best work yet.

  • Anne

This looks so adorable. Have to see it.

  • Raven

Can’t wait to see this. Skars+Julianne+adorable girl= must see!

  • Stacat1

This looks great and the word of mouth has been solid. Onata aprile is adorable and looks like might steal this movie right from under Moore, skarsgard and coogan. Cannot wait.

  • mforman

I cannot wait to see this movie, I also believe that this is going to be his best performance as of yet.
This is the type of role that he loves and I have always loved watching him play, he portrays a character that is kind, handsome, and just an all around amazing character.
Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a great year for him and for us as his fans.

  • Iris

Love Alex but this movie looks meh.

  • Ceara

Looks like such a cute movie, can’t wait!

Great start for Alex in 2013 . All his movies coming out around the same time . I want to see them all .

  • ladybug

@Strange: All his movies from 2011 are out this spring, The Hidden has no release date yet.

@Lilla, the May 3rd release date is apparently currently for NYC only, though hopefully it’ll get a wider release shortly thereafter.

For a TIFF refresher, here are Queen Haq’s reviews from TIFF:

  • Lilla

@ladybug: I had heard that the wider release may be in June, so hopefully that’s true. I’m going to try & see it on the 3rd :)

  • Disney Villainess

*Watches trailer then proceeds to yell at ovaries to chill the f*ck out……..*

  • er5105

Looks good. Plus I LOVE LOVE LOVE Julianne Moore. Can’t wait!

  • Macy

This kid is super cute, I can’t wait to see what she does in this movie. It’s obvious that she had major chemistry with Alex and loves him to bits, so it should be great onscreen.

  • Slinky the Cat

Alex and Onata in this movie are going to be the death of me. Cause of death: hormonal ovarian rupture.

  • Keiko

I’m not interested in this story. Julianne Moore as a rock star? Give me a break. And at 52 years of age she’s supposed to be believable as the mother of a 6 year old? This poor casting choice is a huge turn-off to me. I’ll see this movie. But it’ll be for AS and no other reason.

  • Keiko

Now, The Hidden….that’s a movie I’m pumped for. I love a thriller. This looks like an intriguing story.

  • Flo

    Alex looks amazing

  • Keiko

I agree. That’s my prediction. Actually, it doesn’t even look as horrible as that, so maybe not “straight to video”, but I predict an extremely limited release and then it will disappear. This movie is not even art-house. I don’t even know WHAT will happen with this, but it won’t be any kind of success. Look, it may sound harsh, but the fact is a movie’s predicted success is based on buzz, and this movie just doesn’t have it. I follow movie news–not celebrity news–and there’s just no buzz out there for What Maisie Knew. Alex will give an awesome performance because he is an awesome actor. The kid is super cute and clearly has great chemistry with her leading man, but this will not carry a movie. I know that JM is a well-respected actress and a lot of people love her, but she looks awful in this. She will be a huge detraction for this movie. I’m calling it right now.

  • Keiko

“I also believe that this is going to be his best performance as of yet.”

You cannot be serious. Let me ask you honestly: did you say the same thing before Straw Dogs came out? Or Battleship?

He will be good because he’s never NOT been good. But there’s no way WMK is going to top his performance in Generation Kill or even in Om Sara. Sorry, that’s wishful fan-girl thinking.

  • Keiko

You call this person an idiot because the movie got “rave reviews” at TIFF? Where else has it gotten rave reviews? Where’s the buzz? Where are the critics’ review for advanced screenings? Nowhere, because there are none. “Silly” may have been overly negative in saying it’ll go straight to video, but it won’t be any kind of success either. Now, I’m saying this purely based on the trailer. THAT is an awful trailer. So either the trailer was poorly done, or this is a C-grade movie. It’s one or the other.

This is typical fan rhetoric. Because someone you like is in it, the movie is automatically wonderful and “his best performance ever” and anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot. This shows an appalling lack of critical and analytical thinking skills.

This movie won’t be anything for Alex to be embarrassed about, for sure. But there’s nothing about this movie that deserves the glowing attributes attributed to it by people who haven’t even seen it yet.

  • Keiko

I agree, but according to others here that makes you “an idiot” and possibly a “troll”.

  • glitter

@ keiko This film have a very good review, read imdb, Rotten Tomatoes or indiewire … and the trailer is great – beautiful editing, nice song and great actors so I don’t know why you are so pessimistic ? …

  • Keiko

I’m pessimistic for the reasons already stated, namely the trailer doesn’t look good, and the mis-casting of Julianne Moore who at age 52 is not believable as a rock star or the mother of a 6 year old. And Rotten Tomatoes has given the movie NO REVIEWS, as there are no reviews available to give. I may sound pessimistic, but you and other fans are also attributing positive reviews to this movie that just DON’T EXIST.

** caps are for emphasis, not anger

  • Keiko

I stand corrected about the Tomatoes site. I see there are 4 reviews–the top said “no score yet” so I didn’t scroll down…at first.

While the reviews there are good, only 2 of them are true reviews. The other 2 are synopses. There’s certainly nothing contained in any of the write-ups that can be considered glowing or would indicate any reason to run out and see this.

I will see the movie, but I simply don’t have any high hopes. I think people who love sentimental tear-jerkers will like this more than I will.

  • hmmmmmmm

Well as for me, I won’t past too much judgement on a movie that I haven’t seen yet so no comment from me only comment is I’m glad his movies are coming out soon.

Wait, but going by the trailer to be honest it’s the cute little actress Onata that really catches the eye.

  • Disney Villainess

@hmmmmmmm: Girl yes, this is me. I’m just glad that like finally, the damn movies are coming out, LOL….:)

And on or off topic, however you choose take it: Gustaf Skarsgard’s “Vikings” debuted to really impressive numbers. Hopefully if the ratings keep up, it’ll start some sort of trend where there’s more productions of viking TV shows of the same or different sort and perhaps possibly spill over into movie productions where then maybe, just maybe, Alex’s “The Vanguard” can come out of what seems like purgatory to get that over and done with as well.

  • trish

Actually, the movie DID get quite a lot of reviews when it showed at TIFF, and 99% were positive/very positive.

The official reviews from the big professional critics/sites usually don’t come out until much closer to movies releases, so I really don’t get the reasoning here.

This is a neat little indie with good, honest performances but not the kind of movie that gets either a huge “art-house” buzz or true mainstream recognition, but it’s not even meant or expected to, and it may well do fine in its intended niche. JMO of course.

  • W

Why do people act like every single one of his movies have to be block busters or they are no good? Why can’t we just enjoy them for what they give us? I can’t wait to see him in this because of his relationship with Onata. They are magical together and it’s a side of him that I want to see and enjoy. I enjoyed him in GK, Melancholia, SD, BS and TB. Each character was different and all were interesting to watch. I think his fans want to see each aspect of his talent and watch him grow and flourish as an actor. This crap of always bashing his movies before they even come out is getting old. Those of us who are his true fans appreciate everything he brings to the table and don’t find it necessary constantly look for something to be wrong.

  • Yes

Thank you, nicely put. Keiko, you need to take a step back, You’re acting a little nasty.

  • ladybug

@trish: WIll this be a blockbuster? Probably not. And neither will Disconnect. I suspect that The East has a better chance at more mainstream commercial success. But who knows?
I’m hoping for a good movie. All three that have release dates look interesting to me. I’m also looking forward to The Hidden.
And if you don’t like the subject matter of one of his movies, then by all means don’t see it. There were people who weren’t going to watch Straw Dogs no matter how much they supported Alex. And same with Battleship. Not their type of movie.

@DV: I’m glad for the Vikings ratings. Charlize Theron has an ABC series on Vikings, set in Scotland.

If you’re in the Austin TX area on Saturday the 16th, you might get a Skarssighting:

“We know that SXSW is fast approaching, so we asked Skarsgard management again… Alexander Skarsgard has cleared up his schedule a bit so things are looking good for his attendance at the SXSW closing night film of ‘The East’ that he stars in with Ellen Page and Brit Marling.

Things can always change, but it looks like this is a go! If you are in the Austin, Texas area, check out for more details.”

@Keiko: You sound like a hateful person. Just calling it like it is.

  • Keiko

If you are right and I am wrong, I will admit to it. I would love for it to be an awesome, lovable movie. No one wants a movie to be bad especially if they like the actors in it.

  • Keiko

You know what’s really hateful? A person who has the utter audacity to call another person hateful for her comments about a freakin’ MOVIE. That’s what’s hateful.

  • Keiko

You need to take a step back from telling me what to do. Remember this: you are not managing a forum here. You’re not in charge of anything or anyone.

  • Keiko

Get a grip on yourself and take a look at the headline of the post we are all commenting on. It’s a post ABOUT THE MOVIE. I’ll posit any opinion I damn well want to regarding this movie. I’m judging solely from the trailer. Spare me your self-righteous sermons and your histrionics.

@Keiko: What is your need to reply to almost post? 12 of 42 as I write this. You have your opinions and the right to state them. But where does this apparent need to be the final word on the subject come from? Who cares what others have to say unless it is directed and posted to you personally? I don’t think you are a troll but a very lonely person who likes to see her name a lot on one thread. If you treat people you know personally the way you I cannot see you having very many friends.

This is my honest opinion and I have the same right to speak it as you do yours.

I like the looks of the movie. I don’t care if is big box office or not.

  • @keiko

    you’re being a hypocrite.

  • Keiko

Why do you feel the need to reply to me? Why do you feel the need to track my posts? Why do you feel the need to lecture and sermonize? Why does it (obviously) bother you so much that my opinion is different from yours? Why? Why? Why?

  • Keiko

    I like jerking you around.

  • Canuck

@ladybug: Awwww, the two of them are adorable in those videos.

  • W

I never addressed anything towards you, but you seem to think everything on Alex’s threads lately is all about you. You are the only one sermonizing and bashing your fooked up opinions over any other poster’s thoughts.

@Keiko: I ask you questions. I spoke my opinions. There were no sermons or lectures from me at all. I never said your opinion bothered me. As for tracking your post I was curious that’s all. I am a very laid back person who does not care to argue opinions. I can easily agree to disagree with you and say neither of us is wrong or right. OK?

BTW I ask out of curiosity, ‘What is the origin of your name?”
