Gerard Butler: You Don't Have to Be American to Watch 'Olympus'

Gerard Butler heads inside the BBC 2 studios in rainy London, England on Thursday (April 4).

The 43-year-old actor is in town to promote his latest film Olympus Has Fallen, which he premiered the evening before.

“To me you watch this universally, you don’t have to be American. It’s an attack on the free world. It could just as easily be Downing Street, it could be anywhere.” Gerard said, referring to Brits relating to the movie, comparing their Prime Minister’s residence (Downing Street) to the White House. “I can just imagine Downing Street with two coppers running out with their batons…”

    @truth: OH WOW that was a great interview with Gerry. Love the Celtic pride coming out and you just can’t help get excited with him. Socceraid will be coming up again soon and hope he plays once more. Thanks so much for the link to a nice long interview.

    Back on cocaine to keep up with his lifestyle and all the stress? From one premiere to another all around the world in a few days….He must be very exhausted. I hope he´s not using again.

    Maybe the next installment could be Downing Street Has Fallen?
    -
    No, he’s right, it is an attack on freedom. It is a terrorist take over. It could have been The Pentagon for instance but instead it is the symbol of freedom, to us here, the White House. A sacred home. A home where family live. It is a private residence. An attack on that, their privacy and security. To crush them to submission.

    Isn’t Graham Norton to be taped today as well?

    Today, we had an armed helicopter searching for drug runners, etc and in our city – well, we haven’t seen something like that so people were in a panic mode wondering what was going on here (TX) and the person below commented:

    Don’t worry people, the north Koreans have no interest in the valley, and Gerard Butler is not making any movies here anytime soon. My advice right now is to stay out of bigger cities. Lol

    I had to laugh…
    Oh and yes, there is drug bust as of right now…

  • Lord Love a Duck

    @GFW: Yes, so sacred they closed it off to the citizens who pay to keep it up. Especially feel bad for the kids on Spring break that are denied entrance. A little put out about that.

    Gerry’s expected in Glasgow at the weekend to watch Celtic play

    Heard they’re working on that for that reason. I’ve never been inside and don’t want to. Not my thing. The Library of Congress is more to my liking.

    Don’t know exactly a friend told me it was a newspaper today.

    @Just to say: the game is when then?

  • SeeSawSally

    Gerry has to be in Rome tomorrow and Saturday for the Italian premiere of the movie plus press junkets, he’s then supposed to be off to South Africa (Johannesburg) for more of the same, for 2-3 days, then Mexico on the 14th. It’s exhausting just thinking about it.

  • Just to say

    @TRULY INTERESTED:

    It’s on Saturday.

  • TRULY INTERESTED

    @Just to say: thank you : )

  • Lord Love a Duck

    @Just to say: Don’t know if that is possible for him to be at Celtic game. Gerry is due in Rome on the 5th and 6th, Johannesburg on the 8th and Mexico on the 12th. Depending on when the game is, guess he could fly back, but if Aaron is still with him….he will no doubt need some down time, don’t you think.

  • JS

    @Just to say:

    I read that in the paper today. I’m off to Edinburgh at the weekend so I’m hoping Gerry goes there to visit Brian and maybe I’ll catch a glimpse of him. Would you believe that my parents in law have seen him THREE times when they’ve been in Edinburgh?

  • Just to say

    @Lord Love a Duck:

    Really don’t know. Only going by what a friend read in the paper.

    He’s kind of aging quickly… just an observation. Maybe he’s just been lacking sleep? idk… he just looks a lot older than he usually does.

    Do you mean MG?

  • Lord Love a Duck

    @JS: Of course you know we will want a full report….okay, Will you be going to the game?.

  • GFW

    @KissThis:
    My take on it is the weight loss, stress, smoking (if he still is) and exhaustion/lack of deep sleep. When we sleep our cells renew.

    Think two weeks of DSC serums, peace and quiet, a few larger meals (with more carbs) would soften that leathery look he has at times.

    @Lord Love a Duck:

    No we won’t be at the match (I think it’s in Glasgow) as hubby’s a Hearts supporter. The kind of luck I have I wouldn’t see Gerry if he was staying in the same hotel never mind the same city. It’s the in laws who have all the luck. They saw him two days running would you believe? Might take them with us and see if that helps.

  • GFW

    Another thing could be OTC meds for allergies (if he has them)? They dry the skin out too. It’s not from lack of hydration. I think it is the air travel. Those dry planes along with non-stop talking about himself, this movie, being with strangers and having to be everyone to many.

    Also, when he relaxes his facial muscles he removes 5 years.

  • i luv chips

    we understand each other now :)

  • Ria

    @i luv chips:

    Sure do. I think if it’s a choice between Celtic and MG then Celtic would win. Come to think of it, if it was choice between Rangers and MG I think he would choose Rangers.

  • Lord Love a Duck

    The 43-year-old actor portrays army ranger turned secret service agent Mike Banning in new movie ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ in which his character must rescue the US President after he is taken hostage in the White House.

    Channing can soon be seen saving the US leader from a similarly perilous situation in ‘White House Down’ and Gerard believes if there was a battle between the big screen hard men he would be vanquished.

    When quizzed on whose movie is better at the ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ UK premiere at the BFI IMAX in London on Wednesday night (03.04.13), the Scottish hunk told BANG Showbiz: ”His (Channing’s) is crap! No I’m joking, I haven’t seen it but I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. Channing Tatum’s better than me without a doubt. Channing would win in a fight, yeah.”

    However, Gerard cheekily added: ”No I don’t believe anything I just said, I’m just trying to be humble.”

    Although Gerard’s character Banning is a fearless and calculating hero, the Hollywood heartthrob doesn’t think he’d be so sure of his own judgement in a rescue attempt.

    When asked which one person he would save from a hostage crisis, he said: ”I’d rescue my mum, although now I have nieces maybe I’d need to leave my mum in there! I don’t know; by saying one person it automatically alienates 100 other people.”

    Gerard was greeted with rapturous cheers and screams as he walked the red carpet and braved freezing winds to sign autographs for fans.

    At one point the gusts were so strong they started to rip promotional posters off of the barriers and above the cinema.

    His co-star Aaron Eckhart – who plays fictional president Benjamin Asher – was also in attendance.

    So he wouldn’t save MG then, well by not saving her he’d be saving his wallet!

    “well by not saving her he’d be saving his wallet!”

    Yes, if he can release it from her clutches!
