Roger Ebert Dead at 70

Famed film critic Roger Ebert has passed away at the age of 70, the Chicago Sun Times reports.

The movie aficionado lost his battle with cancer after suffering on and off for many years.

“I am not going away. My intent is to continue to write selected reviews but to leave the rest to a talented team of writers hand-picked and greatly admired by me,” Roger wrote on his blog recently about his cancer recurrence.

In 2006, Roger battled cancer of the lower jaw, and lost his ability to eat and speak, but continued working as a critic.

Our thoughts go out to Roger‘s friends and family during this difficult time.

I expected it after I learned the cancer had returned (he wrote about it 2 days ago). He will be missed, but I am glad he is no longer suffering. My prayers goes to his wife, family, and friends.

a courageous, wise and thoughtful man. a sad loss for us all.

Oh man. R.I.P, Roger. Life is short, people…

He wrote about so much more than movies – he made us think about who we are, and why we are here. Truly one of the great elders of our society who will be greatly missed.

A Real Fighter, RIP!

Simply the best at what he did. Surely will be missed.

RIP to Roger. Simply the best and most intense reviewer who was truly a fan of our favorite pasttime, the movies.

RIP Roger. So proud to have grown up with the program you shared with your Chicago film critic peer Gene Siskel, Sneak Previews and At the Movies on PBS. Your movie criticism will be missed.
