ArtsHundreds Come Out to Honor ‘Unbroken’ Hero
Louis Zamperini, the focus of the best-selling biography ‘Unbroken,’ by Laura Hillenbrand, spoke at two sold-out shows Wednesday at the Regency Agoura 8 Theatre.

April 11, 2013
When Louis Zamperini, 96, entered a packed Regency Theater in Agoura Hills, the audience stood, cheered and waved handheld flags. They came to honor the 96-year-old WWII veteran whose story has inspired them, as well as millions more, through the bestselling biography Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.
Fans of the former Olympian runner started forming a line at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday to get tickets for one of two free afternoon One City, One Book events presented by the City of Agoura Hills, the Agoura Hills Friends of the Library and the Agoura Hills Cultural Arts Council.
“This year’s program started with an idea about highlighting patriotism through literacy,” said Donna Conlin, recreation manager for Agoura Hills. “When Louie walked in with flags waiving what transpired was an overwhelming sense of pride, in our country and in our community. There were so many wonderful comments from the public; one lady said this was the highlight of her life.”
Approximately 400 people attended both shows, according to theater officials.
Mayor Denis Weber, who suggested the book for this year’s program, said he was personally touched by the public’s overwhelming response.
“I’m so happy and so proud that the public has responded to this story of heroism and perseverance and sensitivity and ultimately forgiveness,” he said.
Zamperini, who grew up in Torrance and currently lives in Los Angeles, survived nearly seven weeks at sea, followed by a two years of torture as a Japanese POW after his plane crashed into the Pacific in May of 1943.
“The book is therapeutic for people,” said Zamperini. “People tell me they have gone to their doctors for years to get help, but the book is what really helped them.”
Calabasas resident Alex Katunich, former bass player for the band Incubus, agreed. “Your book changed my life,” he told Zamperini. I was going through some very hard times when my Dad handed it to me. After reading about what you survived, I knew I could survive.”
Before Zamperini took center stage for a Q & A session, a documentary narrated by CBS reporter Bob Simon recounted his ordeal and ultimate forgiveness of his captors.
In 1998, at 81 years old, Zamperini returned to Japan, finally running in the Olympics, carrying the torch to help open the games in Nagano.
Following the documentary, the frail but sharp-witted Zamperini offered personal accounts with humor in addition to fielding audience questions.
Asked if he ever went out on the sea again after the war, he replied, “I did take an adventure cruise to Mexico in 1949, and we forgot to notify the Coast Guard where we were going.”
His story is set to be made into a feature film, said his son Luke Zamperini. “They have been wanting to make it since 1957 and now it looks like it’s finally going to happen, he said. “Angelina Jolie is the director and we’re very excited. She’s read the book twice and has met with my dad. She has the right passion to turn his story into a movie.”
Who will play Zamperini? After considering all the likely actors, that included Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Cage, Luke said that everyone agreed it is probably best played by an unknown.

Thank you FYI12 Post #473 for the Link.
Angelina is breathtakingly beautiful in that picture. She looks so cute, like she is saying “I’ve got a little secret and just wait until you find out what it is.” She looks like all of her kids with that sweet “impish” smile.
What a remarkable woman. Brad must be busting his buttons. And I can just hear him answering again in the same way he answered before when an interviewer asked him “Who is your hero?” And Brad responded “The mother of my children!” Whoa!!!!! No wonder he says she is “a Force” and he should know.

Thanks for the Link Phool.
Loved this part of the article.
“………….when the most beautiful of actresses points it out.”
Angelina is herself….gorgeous beyond words no matter what she is wearing. But here she is dressed sedately and conservatively, while lobbying for justice and the rights of oppressed women throughout the world. And yet, because her beauty is so stunningly and undeniably evident, because it comes from deep within her soul, no matter how she plays it down, the writer is compelled to crown her…….

Thank you, Sunny, for the Louis Z write up. What an amazing human being he is. And a what a life. And to read that peoples’ lives have been changed just by reading his book is heartwarming.
I am thrilled that both Brad and Angelina have had the opportunity to sit and talk with this man who has so much good to share. I cannot wait to see this movie.
And who will be that “unknown” who will be privileged to play out the life of Louis Z on the big screen under the direction of Angelina Jolie.
What an incredible introduction to the world of “acting” that person will have. Although my personal choice was Liam Hemsworth, but he may be too tall. Now I am excited to see just who this person will be. I just want Brad to have a major role in the movie as well. Well, I can dream can’t I? :)

Oh let’s not compare the legacy of a legend like Princess Diana to a Hollywood spoiled brat who only became a “humanitarian” in an attempt to erase her sordid past and revamp her career.

Princess Diana who effectively used her relevance in society to bring attention to real issues, and fact is, she did it way before she got divorced and her personal struggles were revealed. She never began her humanitarian work on a PR team’s advice either; it was simply her calling. She already had good PR and was adored by people worldwide, and when she opened up about her personal struggles, that made her more sympathetic to everyone.

Actors in Hollywood need to be bankable, and therefore need good PR and be able to relate to audiences to be liked by them. When she hit rock bottom in 2004, Heroina had alienated pretty much everyone with her weird antics -sucking face with her brother, cutting, knife collecting, horse molesting, blood vial carrying, boasting about her promiscuity, being a man-eater. Then she reinvented herself as the protector of refugees, and provider to third-world orphans, and used that as a smoke screen to divert from her adulterous affair. Her only purpose to get involved with any humanitarian endeavour is of course in self-gain, and no one has ever been more evident about it than her.

@Ladder Climber Jolie:

LOL. They’ll also let you in if you can afford to toss $5m or more in the direction of a few high-ranking officers or you meet one officer who is just as much of a famevvhore as you are. As somebody else pointed out, people in that field have gone to school for decades, and start their careers from the lowest rank. You have to wonder the kind of lengths someone is willing to go, and the kind of special favors they will do, in their never ending quest for fame and power.

Ayaz recalled Jolie visiting the mosque’s open backyard, which at the time served as a classroom, and sitting cross-legged with villagers discussing her plan to found a modern school.

“She was very humble. She sat on dust. She didn’t behave like a movie star,” Ayaz said, remembering Jolie arrived in a UN-marked vehicle and wore a modest black outfit and brown headscarf.

Nathalie Nozile (JD 10) works on behalf of children as Jolie Legal Fellow
When Nathalie Nozile (JD 10) was last living in Haiti, she was sheltered in a children’s home with dreams of being a lawyer.
Years later, Hollywood superstar and philanthropist Angelina Jolie helped make Nozile’s dreams of becoming a Haitian lawyer come true.
Ten years since coming to the United States, Nozile returned Jan. 30 to her home country as the first Jolie Legal Fellow.
Sponsored by the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, this year long fellowship places Nozile as a special assistant to the Haitian government. Her job is to ensure the rights of vulnerable Haitian children. She may also have the option to continue in the position after she completes the first year.
Nozile said “there was no time to be star-struck” when she met Jolie.
“A lot of kids are lost in the system in Haiti. Children who are in confl ict with the law need representation,” Nozile said. “They need an advocate, they need a lawyer pushing through to make sure their voices are heard.”
And Nozile is prepared to be that voice.
“I am ready to go to work,” she said.

Jolie Lends Support To Malala Fund
Last updated (GMT/UTC): 05.04.2013 18:37
A fund set up by Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai plans to send 40 girls to school in her home region with the support of U.S. actress Angelina Jolie.
Malala, 15, was shot in the head and neck by the Taliban in October in Pakistan’s restive Swat Valley for campaigning for girls’ education.
Malala announced the initiative in a video message from London on April 4 to the Women in the World Conference in New York.
“Thank you so much, Angelina,” Malala said. “And I would like to thank Tina Brown and the Women in the World Foundation. Today, they give me an opportunity to speak. And today I’m going to announce the happiest moment of my life. And that is the first grant of the Malala Fund.
“In Swat Valley, in my motherland, we are going to educate 40 girls. And I invite all of you to support the Malala Fund and let us turn the education of 40 girls into 40 million girls.”
Speaking to the conference in New York, Jolie explained Malala’s vision for the initiative.
“In a brutal attempt to silence her voice, it grew louder and she more resolute, calling on the entire world, not just Pakistan to ensure the right for every girl and boy for an education,” Jolie said. “‘It is my right,’ she said. ‘It is our right.’ She is powerful. But she is also a sweet, creative, loving little girl who wants to help others, to work for others. She doesn’t want to be the center of attention. Her goal is progress, not notoriety.”
Malala has been receiving long-term rehabilitation treatments in Britain. She said that Jolie and two women’s charities had helped raise $45,000 for the Malala Fund — an amount which would send 40 girls aged between 5 and 12 to school in Swat Valley.
Jolie pledged to give the fund a further $200,000.
Malala, nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, has become a global symbol of the campaign to ensure girls’ rights to education.
