Leonardo DiCaprio Covers 'Esquire' May 2013

Leonardo DiCaprio is all suited up on the cover of Esquire magazine’s May 2013 issue.

Here’s what the 38-year-old The Great Gatsby actor had to share with the mag:

On being single: “Six months of being on location or being off in Morocco or someplace like that is not the best thing for a relationship.”

On what propels him: “I always thought of myself as the underdog, because I didn’t have nice enough clothes or maybe my hair didn’t look good. And so you have to understand – getting your foot in the door is like winning the lottery. It’s literally like winning the lottery if you get to have a career. And I’ve always felt, Okay, now I’ve gotten this shot, and I’m lucky to have gotten this shot, and if I don’t do this to the best of my ability – if I don’t work my as* off and make a life of it – I’ve squandered this incredibly golden opportunity. And that’s always been what has propelled me.”

On his early success: “I really didn’t understand what fame was and I didn’t understand what being in a giant hit was and I didn’t understand what a giant hit Titanic was compared to other giant hits. There was no rule book. There was nobody to navigate me through the experience of being watched all the time and nobody to tell me how to be normal when everybody is acting and looking at me differently.”

    L Says:

He’s so self aware. It’s so nice he’s still unassuming, grounded and appreciative of what he’s got. Some young celebs should seriously learn fom him.

  2. 2
    hmm Says:

He looks older than 38…look at those wrinkles…

  3. 3
    What Happened? Says:

Leo needs to take better care of himself he looks like a 50 year old.

  4. 4
    Ha ha Says:

At least he aint botoxed like everyone else

    ace11 Says:

Guy really blew it when he let Giselle go…..

Been down hill for him ever since

    Sweetness Says:

This time I MUST agree. He looks way older than 38..what happened to him. Some men age and look sexier but in his case he looks unattractive. 38 is way too young to look this beat down. Detox and Yoga for Leo..Pronto!

    ???? Says:

Six months on location is not good for a relationship? Last time he was on location in NYC and his last public gf actually lives in NYC so what was the problem? Being an aging womanizer is more like a relationship killer…
I don’t even wanna read the rest of it. He knows how to answer these questions so the public can see him as this grounded and cool person that he isn’t. He doesn’t live up to his words in real life. These interviews are just part of his acting job and promo for his movies.

    ???? Says:

I think the cover is horrible. There are way better photos of him in the magazine.
I agree with some of the comments he does look older than his real age. Especially with the beard.

    Cece Says:

I could care less about his personal life, and i definitely think that growing up without much explains a lot of his personal behavior. I just think that he’s a fantastic actor. Never saw Titanic, but I’ve loved him in just about everything else. I thought he was stunningly good in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and he was just a kid there.

    Message Says:

Hey, everybody! Definitely not Leo’s best pictorial. He does look older in these pictures, which is weird because he has been looking good lately. We all know he says the right things in all of his interviews. Actions speak louder than words. I hope for the best for him, though. And I already have a babysitter lined up for dinner/Gatsby date night with the hubs!

  11. 11
    ???? Says:

I agree. He says the right things that people want to hear but that doesn’t necessarily mean he speaks the truth. And I also agree with Message that actions speak louder than words. Someone should tell him that…

  12. 12
    haha Says:

its not the best picture of him, but the photoshoot inside the magazine is much better. he looks pretty good for 38…hate to break the news, but a majority of 38 year olds don’t look like THAT.

    Wizzer Says:

    @7 Agree 100%
I also don’t understand the ‘underdog’ comments.
He actually had success early in life, unlike others and with his looks has managed to maintain it. He did not have much of an awkward phase. Other blonde blue eyed peers like Jonathan Brandis crashed and burned.
Good for him, but Leo is very much part of the establishment, like Johnny Depp he’s no underdog not then and not now but it sounds cool to say it

  14. 14
    superficial Says:

They look at him because he’s hot.

  15. 15
    L Says:

the fact he doesn’t do serious relationships, doesn’t negate what he said here about career drive, Fame and Success. His love life is his business(look @his short answer); virtually, he has never talked about his relationships, made them public, done publicity stunts, or tried to coverup the fact that he’s a serial dater. So, judging his persona, the way he deals with work and his awareness of his surrounding by how much he dates is just ridiculous IMO.
When he royally f ucks up, harming people, breaking up marriages, addressing people arrogantly and pretentiously then we can say w/e.
This coming from someone who has never found him attractive and just liked him in very few movies.

    laly Says:

Worst cover ever… but seriously who cares. He can act.

  17. 17
    ???? Says:

@L: It`s not just his private life. That was the first question in the post and it immediately stood out for me. It`s the same with the underdog comment as Wizzer pointed it out.
I gave up reading his interviews a long time ago because I think he is selling an image and a movie. It almost feels like his answers are practiced and they are repetitive at times. He sticks to a certain image but as it was said earlier actions speak louder than words.

  18. 18
    blondie Says:

@????: I’m sorry to bother you but perhaps his private life ain’t as interesting as people think. His movies and his job are way more interesting. So what else can he say? He’s always being asked the same questions. He must be tired of always answering the same over and over again.

  19. 19
    ???? Says:

Didn’t I just say that it’s not only his private life?
I don’t think giving repetitive answers is about the questions. Maybe he is not that interesting himself. I do feel like he is selling an image in these interviews.

  20. 20
    ???? Says:

All I’m saying is that I used to love reading his interviews but not anymore. It just feels like he is in a role when answering questions. That’s it.

  21. 21
    blondie Says:

@????: You are twisting everything. He’s an actor and nobody should care about his private life but he knows that for many, it is still interesting so he politely answers not giving much info because he’s not dumb and before everyone else it’s himself and his happyness…. He’s an actor before a clownish entertainer and many things must be kept in private as many people should.

  22. 22
    ???? Says:

@21: Well, you say I`t twisting everything meanwhile you are ignoring my comment in which I said it`s not only about his private life. In spite of that you keep focusing on the private life part…

  23. 23
    L Says:

You have to understand that this is HiS JOB, you can’t just expect him to talk like the interviewer is one of his closest friends. His just doing what everyone of us would do in work related settings.
Again as long a he remains greatful and acknowledging all the opportunities he has had, which still better than most celebrities, he’s good in my book.
Lol gotta admit that the underdog thing is very true; feeling like the underdog is totally independent from the opportunities you’re given imho
he still hasn’t got mayor awards yet, the guy started really young and with ALL the amazing opportunities at 38 is still trying to get the approval of his piers.

  24. 24
    Isabelle Says:

Really like him as an actor but hes kinda douchey with women.

  25. 25
    Imature Says:

He is an immature child, it really is not good for a relationship.
