Leonardo DiCaprio: I Was 'Reluctant' to Tackle 'Great Gatsby'

Leonardo DiCaprio sits down to chat about his upcoming film The Great Gatsby on Good Morning America on Wednesday (May 8) in New York City.

“I read it in junior high school and it made sense to me. It was representative of the roaring twenties. Baz handed me a first edition copy, and as an adult, it takes on a different meaning. It’s really an existential novel,” Leo said about re-visiting the book before accepting the role.

“I was reluctant…what’s so powerful about this novel is everyone has their own interpretation of these characters,” Leo added about maybe not taking the leading role.

    Delilah Says:

I don’t have anything to say about his personal life. I love Leo. I always have loved him. He is an amazing actor and it is a disgrace he never got an Oscar. Ever since What’s Eating Gilbert Grape he has been just incredible. Romeo & Juliet, Revolutionary Road, Gangs of New York, Catch Me If You Can, you name it. Awesome.

@nancy: um his personal life is pretty amazing too, lol. trips around the whole world, models galore, hottest parties and nightclubs et al. His life has no flaws.

I agree he do stress parts good though some parts he played nope like the other movie that was out in last summer . This one more likely set to do good glamour and old school type..

    Sarah Says:

I guess with the salary he gets from his movies, any other guy would also be able to afford parties on yachts filled with escorts.

    Martha Says:

So what if he likes to have fun with many women? You guys are in no position to judge his choices!! Nobody is perfect and he is human like the rest of us! He is allowed to make mistakes as well! People want him to be perfect and behave properly all the time but they fail to realize that being perfect is impossible!

Great idea. Said it before and I’ll say it again, it’ll help introduce LD to a whole new, younger audience who may be unfamiliar with him and his work.
I don’t see how someone hasn’t snapped up doing Macbeth long ago. Sam Worthington did a Macbeth piece of sh*t a few years ago, and that just solidified that no-one has done a good Scottish play since Polanski.
I don’t like Baz for it though. I like my Macbeth with a dark and somber feel, not singing monologues. Although I’d love to see what Baz would do with Lady Macbeth — “I have given suck and know how tender it is to love the babe that milks me” *jazz hands* Uh. No.

Go to Lainey’s site and look at the pictures. It’s a study in studying Leo. By the eighth picture he’s on. “Leonardo DiCaprio” is ready to work.
I love the Gatsby promo pictures, etc., but I’m feeling for him. Done. Time to put on the vacation cap.

    LOL Says:

Yeah no wonder why Leo insists on keeping his private life private. Imagine watching Gatsby or any other “serious” character on the screen and trying to disconnect the image of the guy surrounded by escorts on yachts and in nightclubs. Pretty awkward.

    CDAN Says:

This A+ list mostly movie actor who is about to take a break was on the receiving end of attention from a SI Swimsuit model not named Kate Upton. The model, who was wearing a top that was kept closed by one simple button at the bottom told the actor that she had worn the top just for him and invited him to reach inside and see if he liked what she had to offer. He took her up on the touching, but that was about it and moved on with his friends like what had happened was a normal occurrence.

Forget about Oscar for Dicaprio. He is not Jew, even half-Jew. So just forget about it.

… nor Black. So yeah, forget about it.

LOL. Tell me, Leo, without googling cliff notes — Just how is “Great Gasby” an “existential” novel according to your definition?

  19. 19
    @CDAN Says:

I wonder if the blind was created based on the post of this SI model. CDAN tends to invent blinds. If it’s a regular party I say maybe but it was the after party of a screening with the director and co-stars present so I don’t know.

Not everyone thinks living that kind of lifestyle is flawless. Empty and materialistic.

A must see. There has always been something about Leonardo. He is very talemted and low key. He gives back without showing it off and that is very respected.

    PirateFan Says:

Although my “Leo Mania” days are behind me, he was amazing in The Great Gatsby! It was also cool to see he and good friend, Toby Maguire working together. I never read the book in high school but bought it not too long ago and it was really good. The movie was a bit crazy at the party scenes but the story was great and the costumes were beautiful!
