Winona Ryder Covers 'Interview' Magazine May 2013

Winona Ryder strikes a fierce pose on the cover of Interview magazine’s May 2013 issue, on newsstands May 14.

Here’s what the 41-year-old Iceman actress had the share with the mag:

On her early career: “Looking back — and this is all in retrospect — I did have a lot of success and a lot of great opportunities earlier in my career. But I did also have this thing that was sort of happening in my late twenties where, whether it was because of how I looked or because I started so young, even though I was the right age for things, people didn’t think that I was old enough.”

On her arrest for shoplifting in 2001: “I was starting to have some trouble before that. I think a lot of people think that that is what sort of sent me off in another direction, but I was actually starting to have some trouble a few years before. And then there were also a couple of movies that I was going to do, that were all set up, and then, at the last minute, they fell apart… And with what happened . . . I was living up in San Francisco and I really needed the time off, which ended up being a couple of years. In a weird way, it was almost like the best thing that could have happened because I’d never asked myself the question before of, ‘Is it okay if I’m not going to act? Is there anything else?’ because that was all that I really knew.”

On her comeback: “I have to admit, though, that every time I hear ‘comeback, blah, blah, blah,’ it’s kind of hard for me. I’m not trying to be super-sensitive at all, but there is a little bit of defensiveness because I do feel like I have contributed. Even if I’d just made Beetlejuice and Heathers, I put in work.”

Winona is a great actress, that’s all that should matter. She has contributed more than many others have ever done or will ever do.

I like that she is honest about her career and her issues. A lot of people think it was just the shoplifting but she was having serious drug problems and had become very unreliable and developed a bad rep in Hollywood. She was hanging out with that trainwreck Courtney Love for goodness sake! Getting caught was the best thing that happened to her as she was forced to get help and get clean and step away from the Hollywood craziness. She seems to be in a much healthier place mentally now.

She still looks great and she is correct she was part of some classic movies in the 80s and 90s. Some people work for decades and never star in as many memorable films as Winona did at her peak.

It would be great if a director that she once worked with would cast her again in a lead role. I’m thinking Scorsese or Jarmusch. It’s strange that everyone is rooting for Noni EXCEPT for Hollywood. Why is it so hard for them to put her in a lead role? Why do former male hellraisers like Robert Downey Jr. get away with it? Such double standards.

he is in the power cell

men vs women or is it jewish Says:

it would be helpful that more women were behind the camera doing cinematography and doing the scriptwriting for a change….its all cartoon characters superhero stuff with these guys.
women have stories to tell too but they either aren’t getting noticed or they aren’t stepping up or the men and the jews are locking them out with their agenda holding women down by not training them not letting women shadow them. things like that. just as there is a crisis in the math and science arena as far as women go, the same thing holds in the movie industry. women being employed in the sidelines is not enough in the movie industry. they have to take charge just like they are trying to do in politics.

Let’s not forget she also battled depression and panic attacks and has been very honest about it. Happy that she is in a better place and seems more calm and healthy now. I hope Hollywood gives her better roles now. She is extremely talented and deserves so much success. Love you Winona! Can’t wait to see The Iceman.

the guys who are in the power cell are not necessarily high quality individuals… she might be too nice for them.
however, i know outside of the movie industry guys have the hots for her. she’s not going to do anything kinky or sexual on film. and they still have the hots for her.

    Liz Says:

I hope Tim Burton casts her in a lead role again. As much as I like Helena Bonham Carter, it’s time for something new and I think Winona and Burton make a prefect team. Add Johnny Depp and I would be in cinema heaven!

    nutcracker Says:

the press has that job of putting words into our mouths and our heads. Having to say ‘comeback’ is rubbish and we have to put up with so-called actresses who are known for their tabloid stories, bodies and pretty faces. Along with Kirsten Dunst, she manages to put her personal life outside of the limelight and talks about it in a direct manner without trying to look best for PR. Her films have made her more credible than starlets these days. She is a true artist who cares more about her craft and film than most women who care about airing their dirty laundry and “talents” (or lack of) in public. She’s also in The Crucible, Edward Scissorhands and Dracula.

Does anyone love Reality Bites as much as I do? I first saw it when it came out, I was in junior high school. After I graduated college I watched it again and I loved it more! Some of the best lines are in that movie.
