Angelina Jolie Has Bravely Completed a Double Mastectomy

Angelina Jolie has bravely opened up about going through a double mastectomy.

“I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex,” the 37-year-old actress wrote in the New York Times.

She added, “I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.”

“I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has,” Angie said.

# 2

She watched her mother die from cancer….I’m sure she made an informed decision.

# 3

Brave woman indeed.

# 5

Not sure GOD would approve though

# 6

Will be praying for u Angie.

# 7

I could imagine how hard this decision was to her. But her mother diied young and did not see all the grandchildren. She is brave for making this decision. My mother- in- law had a mastectomy too.

@PRESIDENT-ELECT-ROMNEY: thx for being the stereotypical Republican, it really helps push young people towards the Democratic party.

# 9

That is immense courage to face those odds and choose to take preventative measures even when the sacrifice is something so engrained in our identities as women.

Say what you will, but I don’t think it is a stretch to believe that there may be just one woman going through this either for prevention or treatment who is attempting to come to terms with losing their breasts. Just one may find slight comfort or confidence knowing a woman regarded by many as one of the world’s most beautiful did the same thing. That would be enough to consider her op-ed impactful.

However, even more may now be hearing the term “BCRA1″ for the first time. Even more will hear the morning shows discuss what it means. Someone might remember, “Hey, I have not even gotten a mammogram in a few year. Maybe I should call and get an appointment this summer.” She made a difference today. It might not have been one you will feel but it did happen.

You need to read the story, #5.She has a faulty gene that means she has a 87 per cent chance of getting breast cancer.
Whatever you think of her, you gotta love her generosity for sharing this information. She’s so socially minded!

Angie, we support your decision and pray for your continued recovery.
Women all over the world will thank you for sharing this story.

You put vain aside to take care of a life threatening issue because of your love your kids and Brad.

Kudos to you and kudos to Brad for being by your side all the way. You’re both lucky to have each other. God bless you and Brad and your children.

@huat: Could you be any dumber?? She had an 87% chance of breast cancer. She chose to live and raise her family instead of putting her breasts first. Angelina is amazing. I have had too many friends die of this hideous disease. With reconstruction, she still has all her ‘parts’. And tee, you are stupid, too. The idiot you comment on is hardly a Republican and not a Republican view point I can assure you. I have admired Angelina for years and this makes her even more admirable in my opinion. She could of kept this private but chose to help others.

@huat: Other than her 87% chance of getting breast cancer? Some people inherit cancer genetically, while others are prone from environmental factors, she was obviously the first.

Most people veer out of the way of a collision, they don’t wait to see if they make impact.

Such a strong woman. So proud to be a fan.

When I first heard this news I was floored but in a both in a sad and good way. She has to be one of the most inspiring public women around. By doing this not only is she extending her own life but she is also giving hope to lots of other women who face the prospect of getting such a horrible disease as cancer.

I’m still speechless while typing this. I hope that she comes through what must be such a painful and life changing process.

@Jen: I agree with this completely. She made a decision to forgo vanity and proactively took measure to prevent a disease that would take her from her children. That takes guts especially when she is an industry that thrives on physical perfection. She also did not have to disclose this but she did and I believe it’s going to positively effect many women who are going through the same thing. God bless.

@tryagain: I’m stupid? oh i’m sorry, i didn’t realize that a supporter of Mitt Romney would NOT be a Republican. Get a hold of yourself and stop calling people names.

She is an intelligent and brave woman who understands the dangers and took action. Thankfully I have never had to do such a thing and can only imagine just how much thought went into making this decision.

She could have kept this quiet but decided to go public – something which cannot be easy. Hopefully many women will learn from this, do the test and lives will be saved.

I wish her and her lovely family all the very best!

i’m proud of you angie! this decision is hard for a woman to make but you love brad and your children so much that you want to stay w/ them for a long time! you have the highest risk factor! both your grandmother and mother died of cervical/ovarian cancer! early prevention is very important in your case! good job angie! i admire you more for doing this! i’ll pray for you and your family!

Brave brave woman indeed.

With her having shared her decision to the world maybe it save some women. And having put BRCA1 and BRCA2 in there people would know more about it and maybe have themselves tested so they have an option to have a double mastectomy.

If the most beautiful woman in the world would opt to lose that part of the womans body we hold dear, why not us, in order to have that chances drop down from 87% down to 5%.

@huat:

No sadly, “Living a healthy life style” is already accounted for in calculating the risks at 87%. If she smoked or otherwise engaged in cancer risky behaviour, her chances of getting cancer would be so much higher.
.

I’m quite impressed. Amazing woman.

@bth: I agree. Although, she did get implants, so there wasn’t a huge tradeoff. I’m not sure an average person would be able to afford this type of decision, financially and mentally, without having to live with the physical realities of it.

Wow, so unexpected but I am in awe of her decision. Brave woman.

Love Always @ 05/14/2013 at 2:00 am

I am so shocked! When did this happen? That is indeed a very brave decision and I understand it. I wish her and hers the very best. Sending lots of love her way…..
