Multiple characters bit the dust on the penultimate episode of Nashville‘s first season, which aired this evening (May 15) on ABC.

The show starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere follows one legendary country singer and another up-and-coming artist as one tries to stay on top of the industry and the other tries to take it over.

Leading up to the episode, Hayden‘s character Juliette Barnes had been deceived by her former lover/manager (Jay Hernandez), who robbed her of over half a million dollars and also blackmailed her with a sex tape he secretly filmed.

Juliette first decides that she is going to give her former manager Dante the $2 million he demands for the sex tape, but when he out of the blue ups the amount to $10 million, she decides to not give in to the blackmail and announce on The View that the sex tape will be released. Not wanting her daughter to suffer the humiliation of the top being released, Juliette’s mom Jolene (Sylvia Jeffries) asks Dante to come over and she will give him the money. When he gets there, Jolene kills him and calls up Juliette to tell her not to do the interview. Juliette rushes back home to see what is up and finds her mom, who has long struggled with substance abuse, dead of a drug overdose.

In the Rayna James (Britton) world, she is served a restraining order from her ex-husband Teddy Conrad (Eric Close), which says that her new boyfriend Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten) cannot go within 100 feet of their daughter. They end up going to court over the matter the next day with a little help from Rayna’s father, but the issue does not get resolved. At the end of the episode, Rayna’s older daughter Maddie (Lennon Stella) discovers her paternity test in her mom’s closet which shows that her father isn’t who she thought he is.

Deacon’s niece Scarlett O’Connor (Clare Bowen) makes her debut at the Grand Ole Opry during the episode to announce her record deal with Rayna’s new label, but her boyfriend Gunnar Scott (Sam Palladio) is no where to be found after he gets arrested with their neighbor Will (guest star Chris Carmack). Gunnar and Will get into a bar fight after Gunnar performs a song he stole from his dead brother and a man confronts him about the song’s details. At the end of the episode, Scarlett bails them both out of jail, but breaks up with Gunnar.
