Matt Smith Leaving 'Doctor Who' After Christmas Special

Matt Smith will be leaving his hit series Doctor Who after the show’s Christmas special later this year.

Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show,” the 28-year-old actor, who has played an incarnation of the Time Lord since 2010, said in a statement (via The Telegraph). “I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realize all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.”

“It’s been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven [Moffat], he’s a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor,” Matt added. “The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable.

“Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special,” he concluded.

ARE YOU SAD that Matt Smith will be leaving Doctor Who?

Nooo, I’m seriously devastated righ now. My favourite Doctor. He said he won’t leave anytime soon and I believed him. I wonder who will be the new Doctor because I doubt it will be John Hurt. I already dislike Clara, who will probably stay and now I will have to warm up to the new Doctor with her as his companion? Huge challenge for my fan-loyalty.

Nooooooooooooooo, I’m dying!!!!!! My favorite doctor! Please stay just a few more seasons, about 10 or so.. Blehr I just know I’m gonna be a wreck after his last episode because of Matt’s performance and Moffat’s writing!!

This is the problem when you’re a fangirl, when a change happens in the fandom then shit just hits the fan and gets everywhere.

Even still, my best wishes to Matt Smith and I’m gonna be following him wherever he goes :)

    *\o/* YAY!!!!

I am SO excited right now!!!!!

    HATED Smith as The Doctor.

Looking forward to them hopefully choosing an actor that will actually bring Doctor Who back to the greatness it was while Tennant played The Doctor. *crosses fingers*

Matt Smith is my favourite Doctor but it also makes you wonder who will be number 12.

Lets hope the 50th anniversary episode is not his last but i guess only time will tell what will happen to Doctor Who.

I am sorry to see him leave. Tired of changing doctors every 4 years or so.

No he goes at Christmas which is quite normal for them to change over. Smith has been great in a line of greats since Who was recommissioned with Ecclestone. They’re clearly not going to go with John Hurt as the only Doctor though perhaps as an alternate one being the older version of the Doctor. It’ll be a younger actor with some solid but not star making performances under his belt just like Tennant and Smith. It’ll be interesting to see who they go with.

WOOHOO I LOVE when my Christmas surprise is ruined early and I look even more forward to Christmas afterwards! He’s the most annoying Doctor Who and I stopped watching it when he took on the role.

So sad that some people actually think that there is a chance for Tennant’ s come back for good…you are so lame…love Tennant, love, love Matt Smith but I am happy for the next Doctor. Good Luck!

Doctor Who has been going since the 60′s with various Doctors and multiple assistants etc. I’m a bit sad to see him go because he’s been my favourite since Peter Davidson but the only constant in Doctor Who is change. I think everyone with a brain would agree that Benedict Cumberbatch would be the ultimate replacement but I suspect he’s too big now to take the role.
Thank you Matt Smith for bringing some less humanity to someone who is supposed to be an alien that’s over 1000 years old. Looking forward to who they choose next but it won’t change my enjoyment of the show. Hell, I even watched the Sylvester McCoy episodes so you have no idea what ‘testing your can loyalty’ is ;-)

Sad to hear Matt is leaving. I thought he was staying for another Series. I will miss his clumsy but zany rendition of The Doctor. He was a joy to watch. I also respect the fact that he had the difficult task of succeeding David Tennant which was tough and there have been some fans to this day still giving him stick and unfairly. Good luck Matt, and Thank you for bringing back the alien in The Doctor. I will be watching the 50th Anniversary episode and your farewell this Christmas. Geronimo!

I believe that Matt is being selfish, egotistical & too rash by suddenly announcing that he is leaving. Does he not appreciate and recognize what this show did for his career? This is the thanks that Doctor Who producers & fans get for embracing him and joining in on the ride? Well Matt Smith, if I were to ever bump into you on the street be prepared for a slap on the face & a strong telling off from this Whovian. I had a lot of respect for you but the minute you chose to step down from the series, all of that respect went out the window.Thank you for showing us fans your true self. Just another self-proclaimed, self-righteous Hollywood plastic.
