Michelle Chamuel Talks 'The Voice' Finale: I Did The Best I Could!

The 27-year-old contestant talked with JJ and a few reporters on the red carpet about performing “One” with mentor Usher, her plans after the show, and what her favorite off set moments were!

JustJared: How did you mentally prepare for this week?

Michelle Chamuel: “There was a lot more multi-tasking. So, we’re in the car, I’m listening to the song; I’m going to sleep, I’m listening to the songs; I’m getting my hair done, I’m listening — you know, there’s a lot less time. I guess the main difference is there’s a lot more rehearsing and it’s on a different level because your energy’s all sorts of spread out.”

JJ: What did performing “One” with Usher mean to you?

MC: “It’s a classic song and, I think, one of the best written songs and tracks. It’s also about unity, so that in itself was a big part of it. I think just getting to sing the song and the harmonies … It was about singing one of our favorite records and being able to do that together and supporting each other. You can kinda carry each other.”

JJ: How do you think you did tonight?

MC: “I did that best I could, whatever that is. I’m very happy I was able to be at that capacity for myself.”

JJ: What was the thought process for performing “I Knew You Were Trouble,” which you performed two weeks ago, as your defining moment?

MC: “I don’t fully know. I think it’s just the energy of that was one of the most unique for me, as far as what I’m able to show… This is like the top of the energy chain for me. It’s like, ‘Alright, let’s turn it back up to 11. Let’s go back there.’”

JJ: Usher picked that song as your defining moment, would you pick that song or would you choose another?

MC: “I very much respect his choice but I would’ve picked ‘Grenade’ [by Bruno Mars] because that was the first time I felt all these interlocking pieces come together; the score and the movement, you know? So that, for me, is what I would’ve picked.”

JJ: What are your plans after the show?

MC: “I’ve been working pretty hard and consistently for the last eight months and not taking any breaks. I think the most humane thing to do is take a break, to go home, rest up, and collect my thoughts. Get back to some of my music and then make a plan of action.”

JJ: What do you think your first album will sound like?

MC: It depends on if I team up with a label to do it or if I do it on my own. If I do it on my own, the indie electronic influence, people like Imogen Heap, will be in there. If it’s a major label, I’m assuming more of the pop electronic side.

JJ: How was it singing with all the contestants from the live show?

MC: “It was so cool to sing with them, one of the highlights of my night. The second they all showed up, I was like, ‘Man, it should be like this all the time. The Voice should be a show where we just have a cast and then we stay the whole time and then it’s over and everyone goes home.”

JJ: What’s your favorite off set moment?

MC: “There were games of Four Square that used to happen when there were a lot more of us. Judith Hill plays a mean Four Square, just gotta say that. I think that was one of my favorites. We’d see movies together, when they’d take us out.”
