Angelina Jolie Meets with Syrian Refugees at Jordan Border

Angelina Jolie listens intently and records the stories of refugees who had just escaped the war in Syria by crossing the Jaber border on Tuesday (June 18) in Jordan.

The 38-year-old actress, who is a UNHCR Special Envoy, said that the purpose of her visit is “to show support for Syria’s refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by this devastating conflict.”

Angie is in Jordan to mark World Refugee Day, which is commemorated each year on June 20.

“The worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century is unfolding in the Middle East today,” Angelina added. “By the end of this year half of Syria’s population – ten million people – are expected to be displaced and in desperate need.”

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie in Jordan, visits Syrian border
    ———————————————————————————————–
Press Releases, 19 June 2013 2 Hours ago
    -
Hollywood actress and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie is in Jordan to mark World Refugee Day, which each year is commemorated on June 20. Ms Jolie arrived in the country on 18 June, and was joined there overnight by UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres who flew in from Lebanon. Mr Guterres and Ms Jolie will be meeting government officials and refugees living in Jordan’s cities, as well as in the sprawling Za’atri refugee camp.
    -
The purpose of her visit, said Ms Jolie, is “to show support for Syria’s refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by this devastating conflict.” On Tuesday night Ms Jolie travelled to the Jordan-Syria border, where she listened to accounts from men, women, and children who had fled Syria just hours before. She heard stories of bombs and pain and loss from people fleeing Homs, Dara’a and Qusair, three of the communities devastated by the Syrian conflict.
    -
Ms Jolie encouraged the refugees to tell her, and through her the world, of their ordeal. “We can’t know your pain,” Ms Jolie said at one point, speaking to families who had lost their loved ones. She met Mohammed Al-Kassem, his wife Walida and their young daughter Faten who had just arrived after escaping from Qusair, the site of a bitter battle which left the town in rubble and unleashed a recent wave of refugees into neighbouring countries. “In the battles and bombing, most of my friends died,” he said. “There is nothing left, all was destroyed, no buildings, no medicines. Ninety-five men died because their wounds became infected and there was nothing to treat them with. I was the only one of my family to escape. Those who could not flee can only wait for death.”
    -
After meeting with refugees, Ms Jolie was briefed by Maj.-General Hussein Al-Zyoud, the commander of the Jordan Border Security Forces, and his staff. As they talked, shelling just across the border in Syria could be clearly heard. The war in Syria forced some half a million people to flee last year. In the last six months the number has more than doubled to 1.6 million, of whom 540,000 are in Jordan.
    -
“The worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century is unfolding in the Middle East today,” said Ms. Jolie. And yet, she added, “the international response to this crisis falls short of the vast scale of this human tragedy. Much more humanitarian aid is needed, and above all, a political settlement to this conflict must be found.” She urged the world to do much more to help the people of Syria. “The international response to this crisis falls short of the vast scale of this human tragedy,” she said. “Much more humanitarian aid is needed, and above all, a political settlement to this conflict must be found.”
    -
    Additional Information:
About World Refugee Day, June 20 2013
World Refugee Day was established by the UN General Assembly in late 2000 and is marked each year on 20 June. For World Refugee Day 2013 UNHCR has launched a campaign highlighting the strength and resilience of the more than 45 million people around the world forced to flee their homes due to war or persecution. Multiple refugee emergencies in recent month have forced record numbers of people to flee – yet the vast majority of media coverage given over to the conflicts in Syria, Mali, South Sudan and DRC, rarely focuses on the human cost of war. UNHCR’s “1 family” campaign aims to remind the world that the victims of war are mothers, fathers, sons and daughters and that even 1 family torn apart by war is too many.

The Word: Angelina Jolie meets with Syrian refugees
    —————————————————————————
Angelina Jolie traveled to the Syria-Jordan border to meet with Syrian refugees yesterday. Jolie is a Special Envoy for UNHCR, the UN’s council on refugees, and her trip to Jordan was in honor of World Refugee Day, which is tomorrow. The purpose of Angelina’s visit is “to show support for Syria’s refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by this devastating conflict,” she said, according to Just Jared.
    -
“The worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century is unfolding in the Middle East today,” Angelina continued. “By the end of this year half of Syria’s population – ten million people – are expected to be displaced and in desperate need.”
At least they got to hang out with Angelina Jolie. That’s gotta take the sting out of the whole “losing your home to brutal war” thing. Oh, it doesn’t at all? OK.

A stunt double for Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie has sued News Corp over allegations its British newspapers hacked her phone, the first lawsuit in the United States against the company since the scandal broke two years ago. The lawsuit, filed on June 13 by professional stunt double Eunice Huthart, said reporters from News Corp’s tabloids The Sun and the defunct News of the World, hacked her mobile phone while she was working for Jolie on location in Los Angeles.

Angelina Jolie Meets Syrian Refugees in Jordan—See the Pic
    —————————————————————————————–
by Josh Grossberg Today 7:04 AM PDT
    -
While partner Brad Pitt continues to make the promotional rounds Stateside to hype his forthcoming zombie epic, World War Z, Angelina Jolie is taking time out of her busy schedule for a much more serious mission: comforting refugees whose lives have been upended by Syria’s civil war.
    -
The Oscar winner traveled to Jordan on Tuesday, where she met with new Syrian refugees at the Jordan border as part of a fact-finding effort in her role as a special envoy for UNHRC, the U.N. refugee agency. She also embarked on the trip to mark World Refugee Day, which will be commemorated tomorrow, June 20.
    -
NEWS: Angie also checked up on Syrian refugees last September
While meeting with refugees at the Jaber border crossing, Jolie listened to stories of families whose loved ones have been killed, whose homes have been destroyed by bombs and whose towns have been left devastated by fighting that’s led to the deaths of 93,000 people and created more than 1.6 million refugees.
    -
In a post on UNHRC’s website, Jolie said the aim of her visit is “to show support for Syria’s refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by his devastating conflict.”
The actress, who last visited the Jordanian border in December, urged the world to step up humanitarian aid to keep pace with the tragedy and find a political settlement to the conflict.

‘Truly alarming’: Syria conflict boosts worldwide refugee numbers to highest number for almost two decades
———————————————————————————————–UN reports that more than 7m fled homes in last year, many from Syria crisis
    Adam Withnall
    -
The UN estimates that the worldwide number of refugees and internally displaced people is now at its highest level since 1994.
By the end of 2012 there were 45.2m people considered as forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, and human rights violations, of which over 15m were international refugees and almost one million were still seeking asylum. The figure nearly matches the one at the height of the crises in Rwanda and former Yugoslavia.
    -
According to a report from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), an estimated 7.6m people had fled their homes in 2012 alone, including over a million newly arrived refugees.”These truly are alarming numbers. They reflect individual suffering on a huge scale and they reflect the difficulties of the international community in preventing conflicts and promoting timely solutions for them,” said UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres.
    -
The figures equate to a new refugee or internally displaced person somewhere in the world every 4.1 seconds during the last year. “Which means each time you blink, another person is forced to flee,” Mr Guterres said. The conflict in Syria is reported to have contributed significantly to the new figures, and 55 per cent of all refugees worldwide came from just five countries: Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic, and Sudan. Pakistan continued to host the largest number of refugees in the world (1.64 million), nearly all from Afghanistan.
    -
According to the report around 21,300 asylum applications were lodged by unaccompanied or separated children last year, mostly from Afghanistan and Somalia. It was the highest number on record since UNHCR started collecting such data in 2006. Children below 18 years constituted 46 per cent of the refugee population in 2012. The UN also said that, with one exception, the 10 major refugee-hosting countries in 2012 were the same as in 2011. The United States of America dropped out of the list of the top 10, and Turkey moved in into 10th place. Together, these 10 countries hosted 5.8 million or 55 per cent of all refugees worldwide. The United Kingdom hosted almost 150,000 refugees at the end of 2012. There were 201 people who had sought or were seeking international asylum from Britain.

Angelina Jolie says Syria crisis ‘worst’, calls for more aid

Heartened to see that Angelina’s dedication to her work on behalf of displaced persons continues.
    .
Her work witnessing for these people, lobbying on their behalf both in the US and with foreign governments and NGOs as well as highlighting their plight and their needs has proven invaluable to them and to the UN. Her work has attracted more donations than that of any other UNHCR rep.
    .
Kudos to her for seeing a problem and translating her initial interest and concern into concrete efforts to help them. This is what a real human being does. This is what a real woman does. She is a great example for her own children and for others. She is truly an inspiration.

  • Jones

Angie continues to fight the good fight on behalf of refugees around the world. She is resolute (hey haters, that means brave!) in her responsibilities and in giving a voice to those who go unheard. The UN certainly struck gold with Angie. They’ve got to be so thankful and appreciative for Angie’s work as well as the visibility and awareness she brings to efforts they’ve been battling for decades. I’ve certainly learned so much from Angie’s missions over the past 10 years and from hearing her speak about the causes, effects and consequences of massive refugee migration in the world and the instability in causes, especially for the families directly impacted. She is such a wonderful role model and inspiration to young girls growing up all over the world. I truly hope young girls are paying attention and follow in her footsteps. The world would certainly be a much better place with more people like Angie in it.

  • SPONGEBOB :p

BRAVO, BRAVE ANGELINA!!!!!!!! She’s living her life, doing great things to others…using her time, effort, and love to help those who are needy. She is their VOICE for us to hear, learn, and do some action. Some wealthy celebrities are donating money to help but Angelina is not only using or giving her money but also physically there for the people.

    Angie, you’re one of a kind….you’re a living hero!!!!!!!

  • plez

@What the point?: I disagree with your assumption. The UN would not keep asking her to go on these trips if it did not help. But lets say it is true. What kind of world would we have it people don’t try to make things better. If one child gets joy out of Angelina being there than it helps.
    .
I am sure Angelina’s doctors would not let her go on these trips if they were worried. So she does not need your opinion on her health.

  • Just a comment

@What’s the point? – Why does this bother you? When someone is suffering its good to do something good for someone else and that also helps you heal yourself. Let her go there. She’s not hurting anyone and if the UN didn’t think her trips helped they wouldn’t send her on more trips. Maybe you should do something for someone else and make your community a better place. I don’t think Angelina is a saint, but she does good with her celebrity. Let her be.

That would be a big fat no to all haters.
As for ME that kind of talk will go in one ear and out the other as is a waste of time to tell another women how to save herself from breast cancer. All the best to Angie, Brad and their lovely family.
