Jolie calls for more aid to Syrian refugees
—————————————————————–
Oscar-winning actress says Syrian refugees have been hit by “worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century.”
AMMAN – Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie urged the international community to boost aid to Syrian refugees hit by what she called “the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century,” a UNHCR statement said Wednesday.
Jolie, who is UNHCR special envoy for refugee affairs, visited the Jordan-Syria border overnight accompanied by head of UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres.
During their tour the two met Syrian refugees and heard how they had escaped their war-ravaged homes for Jordan.
“By the end of this year half of Syria’s population – 10 million people – are expected to be displaced and in desperate need,” the Hollywood star was quoted as saying in the UNHCR statement.
“The worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century is unfolding in the Middle East today,” Jolie said, adding that the “the international response to this crisis falls short of the vast scale of this human tragedy”.
“Much more humanitarian aid is needed, and above all, a political settlement to this conflict must be found,” she said ahead of Thursday’s world refugee day.
Jolie said her visit was intended “to show support for Syria’s refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by this devastating conflict”.
Jordan says it is home to 540,000 Syrian refugees, 150,000 of whom are housed in the Zaatari camp in the kingdom’s north, near the border with Syria.
More than 1.6 million Syrian refugees have sought refuge in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey since the beginning of an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, the UN says.
It says the fighting in Syria has killed more than 93,000 people so far.

While partner Brad Pitt continues to make the promotional rounds Stateside to hype his forthcoming zombie epic, World War Z, Angelina Jolie is taking time out of her busy schedule for a much more serious mission: comforting refugees whose lives have been upended by Syria’s civil war.
-
The Oscar winner traveled to Jordan on Tuesday, where she met with new Syrian refugees at the Jordan border as part of a fact-finding effort in her role as a special envoy for UNHRC, the U.N. refugee agency. She also embarked on the trip to mark World Refugee Day, which will be commemorated tomorrow, June 20.
-
NEWS: Angie also checked up on Syrian refugees last September
While meeting with refugees at the Jaber border crossing, Jolie listened to stories of families whose loved ones have been killed, whose homes have been destroyed by bombs and whose towns have been left devastated by fighting that’s led to the deaths of 93,000 people and created more than 1.6 million refugees.
-
In a post on UNHRC’s website, Jolie said the aim of her visit is “to show support for Syria’s refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by his devastating conflict.”
The actress, who last visited the Jordanian border in December, urged the world to step up humanitarian aid to keep pace with the tragedy and find a political settlement to the conflict.

The Word: Angelina Jolie meets with Syrian refugees
—————————————————————————
Angelina Jolie traveled to the Syria-Jordan border to meet with Syrian refugees yesterday. Jolie is a Special Envoy for UNHCR, the UN’s council on refugees, and her trip to Jordan was in honor of World Refugee Day, which is tomorrow. The purpose of Angelina’s visit is “to show support for Syria’s refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by this devastating conflict,” she said, according to Just Jared.
-
“The worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century is unfolding in the Middle East today,” Angelina continued. “By the end of this year half of Syria’s population – ten million people – are expected to be displaced and in desperate need.”
At least they got to hang out with Angelina Jolie. That’s gotta take the sting out of the whole “losing your home to brutal war” thing. Oh, it doesn’t at all? OK.

A stunt double for Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie has sued News Corp over allegations its British newspapers hacked her phone, the first lawsuit in the United States against the company since the scandal broke two years ago. The lawsuit, filed on June 13 by professional stunt double Eunice Huthart, said reporters from News Corp’s tabloids The Sun and the defunct News of the World, hacked her mobile phone while she was working for Jolie on location in Los Angeles.

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie in Jordan, visits Syrian border
———————————————————————————————–
Press Releases, 19 June 2013 2 Hours ago
-
Hollywood actress and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie is in Jordan to mark World Refugee Day, which each year is commemorated on June 20. Ms Jolie arrived in the country on 18 June, and was joined there overnight by UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres who flew in from Lebanon. Mr Guterres and Ms Jolie will be meeting government officials and refugees living in Jordan’s cities, as well as in the sprawling Za’atri refugee camp.
-
The purpose of her visit, said Ms Jolie, is “to show support for Syria’s refugees, to call on the world to address their plight, and to better understand needs in Jordan and other countries in the region most directly affected by this devastating conflict.” On Tuesday night Ms Jolie travelled to the Jordan-Syria border, where she listened to accounts from men, women, and children who had fled Syria just hours before. She heard stories of bombs and pain and loss from people fleeing Homs, Dara’a and Qusair, three of the communities devastated by the Syrian conflict.
-
Ms Jolie encouraged the refugees to tell her, and through her the world, of their ordeal. “We can’t know your pain,” Ms Jolie said at one point, speaking to families who had lost their loved ones. She met Mohammed Al-Kassem, his wife Walida and their young daughter Faten who had just arrived after escaping from Qusair, the site of a bitter battle which left the town in rubble and unleashed a recent wave of refugees into neighbouring countries. “In the battles and bombing, most of my friends died,” he said. “There is nothing left, all was destroyed, no buildings, no medicines. Ninety-five men died because their wounds became infected and there was nothing to treat them with. I was the only one of my family to escape. Those who could not flee can only wait for death.”
-
After meeting with refugees, Ms Jolie was briefed by Maj.-General Hussein Al-Zyoud, the commander of the Jordan Border Security Forces, and his staff. As they talked, shelling just across the border in Syria could be clearly heard. The war in Syria forced some half a million people to flee last year. In the last six months the number has more than doubled to 1.6 million, of whom 540,000 are in Jordan.
-
“The worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century is unfolding in the Middle East today,” said Ms. Jolie. And yet, she added, “the international response to this crisis falls short of the vast scale of this human tragedy. Much more humanitarian aid is needed, and above all, a political settlement to this conflict must be found.” She urged the world to do much more to help the people of Syria. “The international response to this crisis falls short of the vast scale of this human tragedy,” she said. “Much more humanitarian aid is needed, and above all, a political settlement to this conflict must be found.”

Additional Information:
About World Refugee Day, June 20 2013
World Refugee Day was established by the UN General Assembly in late 2000 and is marked each year on 20 June. For World Refugee Day 2013 UNHCR has launched a campaign highlighting the strength and resilience of the more than 45 million people around the world forced to flee their homes due to war or persecution. Multiple refugee emergencies in recent month have forced record numbers of people to flee – yet the vast majority of media coverage given over to the conflicts in Syria, Mali, South Sudan and DRC, rarely focuses on the human cost of war. UNHCR’s “1 family” campaign aims to remind the world that the victims of war are mothers, fathers, sons and daughters and that even 1 family torn apart by war is too many.
