Johnny Depp Covers 'Rolling Stone' Magazine As Lone Ranger's Tonto!

Johnny Depp channels his Lone Ranger character Tonto for Rolling Stone magazine’s July 4th issue, one newsstands now!

Here’s what the 50-year-old actor had to share:

On his retirement: “I think while I’ve got the opportunity and the desire and the creative spark to do the things that I can do right now, I should do them. And then, at a certain point, just take it down to the bare minimum and concentrate on, I guess, living life. Really living life. And going somewhere where you don’t have to be on the run, or sneak in through the kitchen or the underground labyrinth of the hotel. At a certain point, when you get old enough or get a few brain cells back, you realize that, on some level, you lived a life of a fugitive.”

On relaxing: “I don’t know if I can relax. Relax, I can’t do. My brain, on idle, is a bad thing. I just get weird. I mean, not weird. I get, I get antsy.”

On the duct tape on his jeans: “I realized one morning as I was going to a thing my boy had at school – one of those things where, you know, they get up and sing a song? I had to be there at a certain time, and, of course, I was running late and I was reaching back to check and see if I had my wallet and passport and stuff. I always have a passport for some reason. And so I reached back and I thought, ‘Jesus Christ!’ There was this really long tear – and there were no undergarments involved. That’s the general approach. And so, yeah, I just immediately looked for duct tape. I know, it’s pathetic. And then I continue to wear them.”

probably the most versatile actor of his age group ever. we only know of his characters, but not himself. thats how you KNOW he is good.

  • Jo

Lame movie choices in the last years…

  • allison

Creative spark? What creative spark? He must mean while Hollywood is willing to pay him 20 mill to do silly movies than he will continue to do them.

  • Matte

I’ve read the interview and he is very funny. Also very touching when he talks about his children and his break up with Vanessa.
And i love to read that he has been 18 months sober!!

  • @6

But when all of his characters start to be the same, just is different costumes, that proves that he has gotten lazy. He has thrown out his ‘art’, in favor of cash.
Captain Jack = Mad Hatter = Barnabus Collins = Tonto
    Such a sell out.

  • no

This white man playing a Native American is offensive.
    I hope this movie flops.

  • pika

@@6: true, he has gotten a tad lazy, but he uses humor to distract people and its working.

  • True

@no: Depp is about 1/4 Native, but he only admits it for profit; hence, the Lone Ranger.

  • coco

@@6: you’re right this character looks like jack sparrow

  • Katie

@allison: silly movies? they are full of creativness

  • Katie

@coco: no it doesn’t all because jack sparrow wasn’t a native american in the wild west wearing a heavy white makeup in with a crow on his had in a native american costume, was he?

  • Katie

@True: he was admiting it since the 21 jump street days check out his old interviews then talk

  • Katie

@@6: those characters has absolutely nothing to do with each other other than the fact he wore a DIFFRENET makeup and costume and put on a DIFFRENET accent but that doesn’t mean anything they still has nothing to do with each other
jack sparrow was a drunk pirate
barnabas collins was a damned vampire
the mad hatter was like its name a mad hatter
and tonto is a native american indian in the wild west in a western movie , have he made a western before? dead man? no it wasn’t that much of a western

  • alex

@Lame: if he’s lame why did you bother click on an article abot him? well you are lame and how excactly did e became a caricature of himself? thats called ageing dumba$$ do you except him to look like when he did 10 years ago or what?

  • brenda

I hope he will be awesome as looks fun and interteinement and here in the magazine shows his character in a good way, this is not ofensive at all, but the haters gonna hate..I wish the best ever for this new movie and I hope all the fans around the world suport him in this one ..come on !!

  • @13

No, he said that he “thought” that his grandmother was 1/8th Cherokee, “or something”.
    Completely offensive.

  • @katie

You really have drunk the Kool-aide, haven’t you.
He’s gotten lazy. He hides behind makeup because he doesn’t want to put in the effort any more. Think about it. How long has it been since he did a movie looking like himself?

  • katie

@@katie: doesn’t the makeup make it harder for him to pull an emotions? he wears makeup to get into his characters because he is a true actor and the latest time he looked like himself was in the rum diary (2011) and the tourist (2010) and guess what? he is not wearing makeup-costume for his new role in transcendence which is a serious sci-fi dramaatic role/movie

  • sara

    @@13: no its not offensive
