'Despicable Me 2' Dominates July 4th Box Office Weekend

Despicable Me 2 topped the five day July 4th holiday weekend box office, earning $142 million!

According to THR, the highly anticipated sequel from Illumination Entertainment – which is voiced by stars Steve Carrell, Kristen Wiig, and Miranda Cosgrove – opened strong by earning $34.3 million on Wednesday (July 3).

Coming in at second place is Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer‘s The Lone Ranger, which took in $48.9 million.

Keeping a strong presence in the top three for third week in a row is Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy‘s buddy cop comedy The Heat, which earned $24.8 million.

Monsters University and World War Z round out the holiday weekend Top 5 with $19.1 million and $17.8 million, respectively.
